Can unemployment benefits continue if I start part-time work in Washington?
I've been on unemployment for about 6 weeks now and just got offered a part-time job that would be about 20 hours a week. I'm worried about losing my Washington ESD benefits completely if I take it. Can unemployment benefits continue while working part-time? I really need the income but I'm scared of messing up my claim status. The job pays $18/hour so it wouldn't fully replace what I was making before. Has anyone dealt with this situation before?

Yes, you can work part-time and still collect partial unemployment benefits in Washington! You just need to report your earnings on your weekly claim. Washington ESD will reduce your benefit amount based on what you earn, but you won't lose everything. The formula is basically your weekly benefit amount minus 75% of your gross earnings for that week.

•That's a relief! So if I make $360 that week, they'd subtract $270 from my weekly benefit? That still leaves me with something.

•Exactly! And you still get to keep the first 25% of your earnings without any reduction, which helps.

Just make sure you report EVERYTHING accurately on your weekly claims. I made the mistake of forgetting to report some cash work I did and ended up with an overpayment notice months later. Washington ESD doesn't mess around with unreported income.

•Good point - I'll be super careful about that. Do I report the hours worked too or just the dollar amount?

Raúl Mora
•Both! They ask for hours and gross earnings. And report it for the week you actually worked, not when you get paid.

If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD to ask questions about working while on unemployment, I had success using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an actual agent. They have this system that calls Washington ESD for you and gets you connected. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Really helped when I had questions about my part-time work situation.

•How much does that service cost? I've been trying to call Washington ESD for weeks about my claim.

•They don't require any personal info upfront and it's way less stressful than sitting on hold for hours. Worth checking out if you need to talk to someone at Washington ESD.

•Interesting... I might try this. The phone lines are always busy when I call.

The part-time work thing is actually pretty straightforward once you understand it. You're still considered unemployed if you're working less than full-time hours and earning less than your weekly benefit amount plus $5. So taking that part-time job shouldn't disqualify you completely.

•That's good to know! My weekly benefit is $487 so I should still qualify for partial benefits.

•Wait, I thought if you work ANY hours you lose your benefits? This is confusing.

•@profile8 No, that's not right. Washington allows partial benefits for part-time work. You just have to report it properly.

I've been working part-time while collecting unemployment for 3 months now. The key is being 100% honest about your hours and earnings. They have formulas that calculate your partial benefit automatically when you file your weekly claim online.

•How has it worked out for you? Are you still actively job searching for full-time work?

Faith Kingston
•Yeah, you still have to do the job search requirements. I log 3 activities per week like everyone else. The part-time job actually helps because it shows you're working and trying to get back to full employment.

Just took a part-time gig myself last week and was worried about the same thing. Filed my weekly claim yesterday and it went through fine with reduced benefits. The system calculated everything automatically once I entered my hours and gross pay.

•That's exactly what I was hoping to hear! Did you have to do anything special or just report it normally?

Emma Johnson
•Nope, just answered the questions honestly on the weekly claim form. Super easy.

BE CAREFUL about your job search log though! You still need to keep looking for full-time work and document your activities. Some people think having a part-time job means they can slack on the job search requirements but that's not true.

•Good reminder! I'll keep up with my job search activities even with the part-time work.

•Yeah I learned this the hard way. Got called for a fact-finding interview because my job search log was weak after I started part-time work.

•Exactly! Washington ESD expects you to treat the part-time work as a stepping stone, not a permanent solution.

This whole system is so complicated. Why can't they just make it simple - if you work, you don't get benefits. If you don't work, you do. All these calculations and partial this and partial that just creates more room for mistakes.

•Because the whole point is to encourage people to take work when they can get it, even if it's not perfect. The partial benefits help bridge the gap.

•I guess that makes sense but it's still confusing as hell.

I used Claimyr a few weeks ago when I had questions about this exact situation. Got through to a Washington ESD rep in like 20 minutes instead of the usual 2+ hour wait times. The rep explained the whole part-time work calculation really clearly. Worth trying if you need official clarification.

•That sounds really helpful. I might use that service if I run into any issues with my weekly claims.

•I'm skeptical of paying for something that should be free, but if it actually works...

•I was skeptical too but the time savings was worth it. Plus they don't ask for your personal info or anything sketchy.

One thing to watch out for - if your part-time work turns into more hours or they offer you full-time, you need to report that change immediately. Don't wait until your next weekly claim to update Washington ESD about significant changes in your work situation.

•Good point! I'll make sure to stay on top of any changes in my work schedule.

•How do you report changes like that? Through the same online system?

•You can call Washington ESD or use their online messaging system. Just don't let it slide.

Been there! Working part-time while on unemployment actually helped me transition back to full-time work. It kept me in a work routine and gave me recent job experience to talk about in interviews. Plus the extra income really helped with bills.

•That's a great way to look at it. I'm hoping this part-time job leads to something more permanent.

•Same here. My part-time job turned into full-time after 2 months. Sometimes these temp situations work out better than expected.

Just remember the 75% rule - they subtract 75% of your gross earnings from your weekly benefit amount. So if you make $400 that week, they subtract $300 from your benefit. Simple math but important to understand.

•Thanks for breaking it down simply. That makes the calculation much clearer.

•Is that 75% after taxes or before? I always get confused about gross vs net.
0 coins
Amelia Martinez
•It's 75% of your GROSS earnings (before taxes). So whatever your paycheck stub shows as gross pay.

For what it's worth, I tried calling Washington ESD directly about this same question and gave up after 3 hours on hold. Ended up finding most of my answers on their website, but talking to a real person would have been better. Might try that Claimyr thing people mentioned.

•Yeah, the phone wait times are brutal. I'll probably stick to the online system unless I really need to talk to someone.

•The website actually has pretty good info if you dig around. But sometimes you just need to ask a human, you know?

UPDATE: I took the part-time job and everything worked out fine! Been working for 2 weeks now and my partial benefits are coming through as expected. The online system calculated everything correctly when I reported my earnings. Thanks everyone for the advice!
