Washington ESD - what happens if you get a job while on unemployment benefits?
I've been collecting unemployment for about 6 weeks now and just got offered a part-time job that starts next Monday. It's only 20 hours a week so I'm wondering what I need to do with my Washington ESD claim? Do I report the income on my weekly claim filing? Can I still get some benefits since it's not full-time? I don't want to mess anything up or get in trouble for not reporting properly. Has anyone been in this situation before?

Yes, you absolutely need to report any work and income on your weekly claims! Washington ESD has specific rules about working while on UI. You'll report your gross earnings for the week you actually worked, and they'll calculate a partial benefit if you're under full-time hours. Don't skip reporting it - that's considered fraud.

•Thanks! So I report it the week I actually work, not the week I get paid? And do I report the hours too or just the dollar amount?

•Report it for the week you worked, and yes report both hours and gross pay. Washington ESD uses both to determine your partial benefit calculation.

I had the same thing happen last year. As long as you're working less than full-time and earning less than your weekly benefit amount plus $5, you can still get partial benefits. Just be super careful about reporting everything correctly on your weekly claim.

•That's reassuring! My weekly benefit is $487 so hopefully I can still get something. Did you have any issues with Washington ESD when you were working part-time?

•No issues as long as I reported everything. Just make sure you're still doing your job search activities too - they still require that even if you're working part-time.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to ask questions about this, I found this service called Claimyr that helps you actually reach an agent. I used it when I had questions about reporting work income and it saved me hours of calling. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Interesting, never heard of that before. How much does it cost to use?

•It's not free but way cheaper than missing benefits because of confusion. The main thing is it actually gets you through to talk to a real person at Washington ESD instead of sitting on hold forever.

MAKE SURE YOU KEEP LOOKING FOR FULL TIME WORK! I made the mistake of getting comfortable with part-time + partial benefits and Washington ESD called me out on not doing enough job search activities. They can disqualify you if they think you're not seriously looking for full-time employment.

•Oh wow, I didn't think about that. How many job contacts do I need to keep doing per week?

Lukas Fitzgerald
•Still the same requirements - 3 job search activities per week and you have to log them in WorkSourceWA. Don't slack on this just because you have part-time income!

been there done that... you can work up to like 35 hours i think before they cut you off completely but dont quote me on that

•It's not really about hours, it's about your earnings compared to your weekly benefit amount. You can work full-time hours but if you earn less than your benefit + $5, you might still get something.

•oh ok i always thought it was about hours thanks for the correction

Whatever you do, don't listen to people who say you can just not report small amounts of income. Washington ESD cross-references with employer tax records and they WILL catch it eventually. I know someone who got hit with an overpayment notice two years later.

•Yikes, that's scary. Definitely not worth the risk. Better to be overly honest than risk fraud charges.

•Exactly. The overpayment notices are no joke either - they want everything back plus penalties and interest.

I'm in almost the exact same situation! Got offered a job yesterday that's 25 hours per week. Reading all these comments is super helpful. One question though - do I need to notify Washington ESD before I start working or just report it on my next weekly claim?

Anna Xian
•Just report it on your weekly claim for the week you actually work. No need to notify them in advance, but definitely don't miss reporting it.

•Perfect, thanks! Congrats on your job offer too @OP!

The Washington ESD website has a calculator somewhere that shows you how much your partial benefit would be if you work certain hours. Might be worth checking that out to see what you'd actually receive.

•I tried looking for that but couldn't find it easily. Do you remember where on the site it was?

•It's buried in there somewhere under the claimant services section I think. The Washington ESD website is pretty confusing to navigate.

Just wanted to add that if your new job becomes full-time later, you need to report that change too. And if you lose the part-time job, you can continue your claim as long as it's still within your benefit year.

•Good to know! Hopefully this part-time thing leads to full-time eventually. Better to have some income than none.

•Yeah, a lot of employers use part-time as a trial period before offering full-time positions. Good luck!

Anyone know if you have to pay taxes on the partial unemployment benefits you get while working? I assume yes but want to make sure I'm setting aside enough money.

Anna Xian
•Yes, unemployment benefits are taxable income. You can choose to have taxes withheld from your weekly benefits or pay quarterly/yearly. Check your Washington ESD account settings.

•Thanks! I'll look into having taxes withheld to avoid a big bill later.

This is such good timing for this thread! I've been scared to take a part-time job because I thought it would mess up my benefits completely. Sounds like it might actually be worth it if I can still get partial payments.

•Definitely worth it! Any income is better than no income, plus it keeps you active in the job market and might lead to full-time opportunities.

•True, and it probably looks better to future employers than just being unemployed for months.

I tried calling Washington ESD about this same question last week and spent 3 hours on hold before giving up. Might have to try that Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier.

•Yeah that's exactly why I used it. The hold times with Washington ESD are absolutely ridiculous. At least with Claimyr you know you'll actually talk to someone.

•I'll check out that video demo you mentioned. Anything beats sitting on hold all day.

Make sure you understand the difference between 'able and available' requirements too. Even though you're working part-time, you still need to be available for full-time work. Don't schedule your part-time hours in a way that would prevent you from taking a full-time job if offered.

TillyCombatwarrior
•That's a really good point I hadn't considered. My part-time schedule is flexible though so I think I'll be okay.
0 coins
Vince Eh
•Just document that flexibility in case Washington ESD ever asks. They can be pretty strict about the availability requirement.

Does anyone know what happens if you get two part-time jobs while on unemployment? Do you report both on your weekly claim?
0 coins
Anna Xian
•Yes, you report ALL work and income regardless of how many jobs it comes from. Washington ESD looks at your total weekly earnings to calculate any partial benefit.

Sophia Gabriel
•Makes sense. Thanks for clarifying that!

Been working part-time while collecting for 3 months now. Just want to confirm what others said - be religious about reporting every penny and every hour worked. Washington ESD does audit claims and they have access to employer wage reports.

Ezra Beard
•How often do they actually audit? Should I be worried if I've been reporting everything correctly?
0 coins
Tobias Lancaster
•If you're reporting correctly you have nothing to worry about. The audits catch people who aren't reporting income, not people who are following the rules.

This whole thread has been super helpful! I was offered a temporary seasonal job and wasn't sure if it was worth taking. Sounds like as long as I report everything properly, I can still get some benefits and gain work experience.

One last tip - keep detailed records of all your work hours and pay stubs. If Washington ESD ever questions your reported income, you'll want documentation to back up what you submitted on your weekly claims.

For anyone still reading this thread, remember that your job search requirements don't change just because you're working part-time. You still need to be actively looking for full-time work and logging those activities in WorkSourceWA.

•This is so important! I know people who got disqualified because they stopped doing job searches once they got part-time work.

•Exactly. Washington ESD's goal is to get you back to full-time employment, not to support long-term partial benefits.

Has anyone had success using Claimyr to get specific answers about working while on unemployment? I'm still confused about some of the calculation details and might need to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD.

•Yes, that's exactly what I used it for! The agent was able to walk me through the exact calculation for my situation and answer my specific questions about reporting requirements.

•Perfect, I'll definitely check out that demo video then. Thanks for the recommendation!
