Will my ESD benefits be reduced for DoorDash gig work? Only making $40-50 for 2hrs daily
I started doing some DoorDash deliveries while collecting unemployment just to keep myself occupied and make a little extra cash. I'm only doing about 2 hours a day and making roughly $40-50 total. I'm currently receiving the maximum weekly benefit amount from ESD, but now I'm worried about how this might affect my claim. Should I just stop doing these gigs altogether? I'm reporting the income on my weekly claims, but I'm concerned they might cut my benefits significantly or disqualify me. Has anyone here managed to do minimal gig work while on unemployment without major issues? I'm just trying to stay busy and not go crazy sitting at home all day.

You're doing the right thing by reporting the income. ESD will deduct part of your earnings from your weekly benefit. In Washington, you can earn up to 1/3 of your weekly benefit amount with no reduction - anything over that gets deducted dollar for dollar. So if your weekly benefit is $950, you can earn about $317 without any reduction. At $40-50 per day, even for just a few days, you might see some reduction. Just make sure you're reporting your gross earnings (before expenses) for the week you worked, not when you got paid.

•Thanks for the explanation! So with my WBA at $915, I can earn up to $305 with no reduction? That's actually better than I thought. The DoorDash app shows me both my total earnings and a breakdown of base pay vs tips - should I be reporting the total amount or just the base pay? Also, do I need to track my gas expenses or anything like that?

•Oh man, that's rough! I definitely don't want to end up with an overpayment. I'll make sure to report everything including tips. Did they also ask you about expenses like gas and car maintenance?

I'm in the same boat right now! Been doing about 10 hours of Uber Eats weekly while on unemployment. MAKE SURE you're counting your work hours as job search activities too! Each week you have to do 3 job search activities, and working counts as one of those activities. So your 2 hours of DoorDash counts as one activity, but you still need two more. I almost got disqualified because I was working but not recording other job search activities.

•That's a really good point that I hadn't thought about. I've been doing my 3 job search activities separately and not counting the DoorDash hours. I'll definitely start counting the gig work as one of my activities. Thanks for the tip!

Just to add some clarity here: as the others mentioned, you must report ALL earnings (including tips) in the week you WORKED, not when you got paid. For gig work like DoorDash, you're considered self-employed, which means you report gross earnings before expenses. However, this doesn't mean you can't work - many people successfully combine part-time or gig work with unemployment benefits. The 1/3 formula others mentioned is correct - you can earn approximately 1/3 of your weekly benefit amount without reduction. But be aware that you must still be available for full-time work and actively seeking employment for your regular occupation. The DoorDash work shouldn't interfere with your ability to accept suitable full-time employment if offered.

•Thanks for the detailed explanation! I'm definitely still available for full-time work in my field and actively applying. The DoorDash is just something I do for a couple hours after I've done my job applications for the day. One more question - when ESD does their quarterly review and checks with the IRS, will they see just what DoorDash reported or will they somehow know if I underreported my earnings?

This is WHY i stopped doordashing when on UI! TOO COMPLICATED and not worth the stress. They take most of it away anyway and then you still gotta pay for ur gas. My friend got an overpayment notice for like $4500 cuz he messed up reporting. Not worth it IMO

•Yep! Especially when you factor in the wear and tear on your car. After gas, maintenance, and the UI deductions, you're basically working for free. Better to focus that energy on finding a good full-time job!

I had the WORST time trying to get anyone at ESD to explain exactly how to report gig work correctly. Their website is so vague about it! I spent THREE DAYS trying to reach someone by phone and kept getting disconnected or put on endless holds. Finally I discovered Claimyr (claimyr.com) and was able to talk to an actual ESD agent within 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. The agent explained exactly how to report DoorDash earnings and what documentation to keep in case of an audit.

•Omg thank you for sharing this! I've been trying to get through to ESD for a week about my mixed W2/1099 income situation. Just checked out that video and it looks like exactly what I need.

One more important thing: keep detailed records of WHEN you worked (dates and hours), HOW MUCH you earned (screenshots from the app are good), and be consistent in your reporting. In 2025, ESD is conducting more income verification audits, especially for gig workers. If they determine you've been misreporting (even accidentally), you could face an overpayment situation AND potential disqualification period.

•I appreciate the warning. I'll start taking screenshots of my daily earnings from the app and keeping a spreadsheet with dates, hours worked, and earnings breakdown. Better to be prepared in case they audit me later on.

Does anyone know if multi-apping affects how ESD looks at your availability? I sometimes run both DoorDash and UberEats at the same time to maximize earnings during my 2-hour delivery window. Would ESD consider that as working more hours since I'm using two apps, even though I'm only actually delivering for 2 hours total?

•Great question. What matters to ESD is the actual hours you're working, not how many platforms you're using simultaneously. So if you're multi-apping for 2 hours, that's still 2 hours of work. Just make sure you're reporting the combined earnings from all platforms for the correct week. The key requirement is that you remain available for suitable full-time work in your regular occupation.
