Thanks for asking this question OP. I'm in a similar situation and this thread has been really helpful.
Final thought - if you do end up needing to file a new claim, make sure you have all your employer information ready including any part-time work you did during your benefit year. The sooner you get that process started, the better.
Just wanted to say good luck with your claim! I was in a similar situation last year and it worked out fine. The stress of not knowing is awful but try to stay positive. Washington ESD is pretty fair about these things when it's clearly not misconduct.
One more thing - when you do your weekly claims, make sure you're honest about looking for work and meeting the job search requirements. That's separate from your eligibility issue but you need to keep up with it once you're approved.
One last thing - make sure you understand the difference between FUTA taxable wages and regular wages for other payroll taxes. Some things that are subject to federal income tax withholding might not be subject to FUTA.
Thanks everyone for the help! This thread has been really informative. I feel much more confident about handling FUTA deposits now. And I'm definitely going to check out that Claimyr service for when I need to call government agencies - seems like it could save a lot of time and frustration.
Just want to add that your benefit amount stays the same for your entire benefit year (52 weeks from when you first filed), even if you go back to work and then become unemployed again during that period. The only way it changes is if you have a new claim after your benefit year expires.
The benefit calculation seems fair overall but I wish Washington ESD was more transparent about the process. When I first filed, I had no idea how they came up with my weekly amount. Had to do a lot of research to understand the base period concept.

Don't forget that unemployment insurance also includes reemployment services. WorkSource offices can help with job search assistance, resume writing, interviewing skills, and sometimes training programs.

•Are you required to use WorkSource services or is it optional?

•It's usually optional, but some claimants may be required to participate in reemployment services if they're identified as likely to exhaust benefits. You'll be notified if this applies to you.

Bottom line - unemployment insurance is a legitimate benefit that workers have earned through their employment. It's not charity or welfare, it's insurance. Your nephew shouldn't feel bad about using it if he qualifies.

•Good luck to your nephew! The system works when you understand the requirements and stay on top of everything.
