Can I draw unemployment benefits in Washington - eligibility questions

I'm trying to figure out if I can draw unemployment benefits in Washington state. I worked part-time at a retail store for about 8 months before they cut my hours down to basically nothing. I'm not sure if I qualify since it wasn't a full layoff and I was only part-time. Does anyone know what the requirements are for Washington ESD unemployment? I've never filed before and don't want to waste time if I'm not eligible.

Yes, you can potentially qualify for unemployment benefits in Washington even if you were part-time! The key is that you need to have earned enough wages during your base period and your hours were reduced through no fault of your own. Since your employer cut your hours significantly, that could qualify as a constructive layoff.

That's encouraging! How do I know if I earned enough wages? Is there a minimum amount?

Washington ESD looks at your highest quarter earnings during your base period. You need to have earned at least $1,850 in your highest quarter, or have total base period wages of at least $2,775 with earnings in at least two quarters.

I was in a similar situation last year - part time job that basically disappeared. The hardest part was actually getting through to Washington ESD to ask questions about my eligibility. Their phone lines are always busy.

Oh no, I was hoping to call them to check before I file. How long did it take you to get through?

Honestly, I never did get through the regular way. I ended up using a service called Claimyr that helped me reach an actual agent. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that explains how it works.

Before you file, make sure you understand the job search requirements. Washington ESD requires you to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log. You also need to be able and available for work, which means accepting suitable work if offered.

What counts as a job search contact? Does applying online count?

0 coins

Yes, online applications count. You can also include contacting employers directly, attending job fairs, or networking activities. Just document everything in your job search log.

Don't forget you need to register with WorkSourceWA too - that's a requirement for receiving benefits.

ugh the whole process is so confusing!! I've been trying to figure out if I qualify too and there's so much contradictory information online. Some sites say one thing about part-time workers and others say something completely different.

I understand the confusion. The best source is always the Washington ESD website directly. They have an eligibility tool that can help you determine if you qualify based on your specific situation.

I tried that tool but it's not very clear about the reduced hours situation. Maybe I should just file and see what happens?

File as soon as possible if you think you might qualify! There's a waiting period anyway, and if you're not eligible they'll just deny the claim. But if you are eligible, you don't want to lose out on weeks of benefits by waiting too long.

Good point. I guess there's no harm in trying. Do I file online or do I need to call?

You can file online through the Washington ESD website. It's actually easier than calling since you don't have to wait on hold forever.

Make sure you have all your employment information ready when you file - dates of employment, wages earned, reason for separation, etc. They'll ask for your employer's information too.

Should I tell my employer I'm filing for unemployment? Are they going to get contacted?

Washington ESD will contact your employer to verify the information you provide, so they'll find out anyway. You don't have to tell them beforehand but it's not a secret.

One thing to keep in mind - even if you qualify, your weekly benefit amount might be pretty low since you were only part-time. It's based on your earnings during the base period.

Charlie Yang

•

That's okay, something is better than nothing right now. Do you know how they calculate the weekly amount?

0 coins

Grace Patel

•

It's roughly 3.85% of your total base period wages, divided by 52 weeks, but there's a minimum and maximum amount. For 2025, the minimum is $295 per week and maximum is $999.

I think the system is totally broken tbh. They make it so hard to actually talk to a human being when you have questions. Like why can't they just have enough staff to answer the phones??

Seriously! I've been calling for weeks trying to get my claim sorted out. The hold times are insane.

That's exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier. It's been a lifesaver for actually reaching Washington ESD agents when I need to.

Don't let the process intimidate you. I was worried I wouldn't qualify because of my work history but ended up getting approved. The worst they can say is no, but at least you'll know for sure.

Thanks for the encouragement! I think I'm going to file this weekend when I have time to gather all my information.

0 coins

Good luck! Just be honest and accurate with all your information. The process takes a few weeks but it's worth it if you qualify.

Pro tip: start looking for work right away even while your claim is being processed. The job search requirement starts immediately and you'll need to report your activities on your weekly claims.

Do I need to apply for jobs that are exactly like my previous job, or can I apply for anything?

0 coins

You need to apply for 'suitable work' which generally means jobs that match your skills and experience, but the definition can be flexible especially early in your claim.

Also remember that if you do get approved, you'll need to file weekly claims every week to actually receive benefits. It's not automatic - you have to certify that you're still unemployed and looking for work.

Charlie Yang

•

How do I file the weekly claims? Is that online too?

0 coins

Rajiv Kumar

•

Yes, you can file your weekly claims online through your Washington ESD account. They're usually available to file on Sunday for the previous week.

One more thing - if your claim gets held up in adjudication (which happens sometimes), don't panic. It just means they need to review something about your eligibility. Keep filing your weekly claims even during adjudication.

Charlie Yang

•

What's adjudication? That sounds scary.

0 coins

Daniela Rossi

•

It's just a review process. Could be they need to verify your work history or the reason you're unemployed. It adds time to the process but doesn't necessarily mean you'll be denied.

My claim was in adjudication for 6 weeks! Nearly drove me crazy but I eventually got approved and received all the back payments.

ok this thread has been super helpful! I think I'm going to file too. We're all in the same boat I guess.

Definitely! Good luck to both of us. At least we know what to expect now.

Just wanted to add - if you worked for multiple employers during your base period, make sure to include ALL of them when you file. Washington ESD will contact each one to verify your wages.

I only had the one retail job, so that should be straightforward. Thanks for the tip though!

The waiting can be nerve-wracking but try to be patient with the process. Washington ESD processes thousands of claims and they do their best to be thorough. Most eligible people do get approved eventually.

Charlie Yang

•

That's reassuring. I'm going to file this weekend and hope for the best!

If you run into any issues or need to reach an agent for questions, definitely consider using Claimyr. Made my whole experience much less stressful.
