Just don't get too comfortable on unemployment. The state wants you off the rolls as fast as possible and they'll make it increasingly difficult as time goes on. 26 weeks sounds like a lot but it's really not in today's job market.
Thanks everyone for all the detailed information! I feel much more confident now about understanding my benefits and what I need to do. 26 weeks gives me a good timeframe to work with for my job search.
You're welcome! Good luck with your job search, and don't hesitate to ask if you have more questions.
And remember about Claimyr if you need to reach ESD for anything - much easier than trying to call yourself!
One thing to watch out for - make sure your employer doesn't report the severance incorrectly to Washington ESD. Mine reported it as regular wages which caused problems with my claim.
Thanks for this thread everyone. I feel much more confident about filing my claim now. Going to do it today instead of waiting for my severance to end.
Whatever you do, don't lie or hide anything on your application. Washington ESD crosschecks everything and if they find discrepancies later, you'll have to pay back benefits plus penalties. It's not worth the risk.
The whole process is frustrating but hang in there. Once you get through the initial claim and any adjudication, the weekly claims are pretty straightforward. Just answer the questions honestly and submit by the deadline.
Patience helps, but don't be afraid to be persistent if you need to talk to someone. Services like Claimyr can save you hours of trying to get through on the phone when you really need help.
Remember that even if you qualify, you still have to meet the ongoing requirements like job searching and filing weekly claims. The work requirement is just to get approved initially.

Make sure you keep track of all your work hours and pay stubs. If Washington ESD ever audits your claim, you'll want documentation of everything you reported.

•Definitely will do that. Better safe than sorry.

I wish I had known about the earnings rules earlier. I turned down a few part-time opportunities thinking I'd lose all my benefits. Would have been making more money overall if I had taken them.

•Same here! The system actually encourages part-time work but they don't make that very clear.
