The maximum 26 weeks can go by faster than you think. Make sure you're actively job searching from day one, not just going through the motions.
One more thing - make sure all your contact information is up to date with Washington ESD. If they need to reach you about your claim and can't, it can delay or stop your benefits.
2020 was when I learned that 'pending' doesn't mean it will be processed soon, it means it could sit there for months with no movement at all.
At least your sister is filing now when there are better resources available. Back in 2020 we were all figuring it out as we went along with no help.
Good luck with everything! The first time applying for unemployment can feel overwhelming but you've got this. Just take it one step at a time and don't hesitate to ask for help when you need it.
Just to add one final tip - make sure your contact information is always up to date in your Washington ESD account. If they can't reach you about your claim, it can cause delays or even stop your benefits.
Remember that unemployment benefits are taxable income. You can choose to have taxes withheld from your weekly payments or pay them when you file your tax return.
Good luck with your claim! The process seems overwhelming at first but it gets easier once you get into the routine of filing weekly claims.

One last thing - make sure you understand the difference between your claim effective date and when you can actually start collecting. They're not always the same day.

•Your effective date is when your claim starts, but you might have a waiting week or other factors that delay your first payment. ESD will explain this when you file.
