Washington ESD has gotten much better at processing claims quickly compared to a few years ago. Involuntary termination cases usually move through the system without delays unless there are complications.
Remember that you can appeal if your claim gets denied for any reason, but with a clear layoff due to company restructuring you shouldn't need to worry about that. Just file as soon as possible and be thorough with your information.
Don't stress too much about the exact amount until you file and see what Washington ESD says. The estimates are helpful but your actual benefit might be different based on their calculations.
Are there any employers who don't have to pay into the unemployment system? I heard some nonprofits are exempt?
Good luck getting through to them though! The phone system is a nightmare. I've been trying for days to get answers about my claim.
This is all really helpful info. I was worried my employer would be mad at me for filing but now I understand they've already paid into the system regardless.
Important reminder - keep all your unemployment documentation even after you file your taxes. This includes your 1099-G, weekly claim confirmations, and any correspondence with Washington ESD. The IRS recommends keeping tax records for at least 3 years.
Good advice. I learned this when I got audited a few years back (not related to unemployment) and had to scramble to find old tax documents.
This thread has been super helpful! I was definitely confused about the tax implications of my unemployment benefits. Sounds like I need to gather my 1099-G and make sure I report everything correctly. Thanks everyone for the explanations and tips.

Just wanted to say this thread has been super helpful! I'm in a similar situation and was dreading the whole process but now I feel like I have a better idea of what to expect. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences.

Good luck OP! The process can be frustrating but stick with it. Having that safety net while you job hunt makes a huge difference in reducing stress and giving you time to find the right opportunity instead of just taking the first thing that comes along.

•That's exactly what I'm hoping for - just enough breathing room to find something good instead of panicking. Thanks for the encouragement!
