What qualifies for unemployment benefits in Washington ESD?

I'm trying to figure out if I qualify for unemployment benefits through Washington ESD and honestly the website is confusing me. I worked for 18 months at a retail job making about $16/hour but got laid off last week due to store closures. My manager said I should apply but I'm not sure what the actual requirements are. Do I need to have worked a certain amount of time or made a certain amount of money? Also heard something about having to look for work - what does that actually mean? Any help would be appreciated because I've never filed for unemployment before.

You should definitely qualify! Washington ESD has two main requirements: you need to have earned enough wages in your 'base period' (usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters) and you need to be unemployed through no fault of your own. Since you were laid off, that covers the second part. For wages, you need at least $1,005 in your highest quarter and total base period wages of at least 1.5 times your highest quarter.

That makes sense! I think I should meet the wage requirement since I worked steadily for 18 months. What about the job search thing though?

0 coins

You'll need to make at least 3 job search activities each week and keep a log. This can include applying for jobs, attending job fairs, networking, etc. Washington ESD has a list of approved activities on their website.

The hardest part honestly is just getting through to Washington ESD to file your claim. Their phone system is overwhelmed and the website crashes all the time. I spent hours trying to call them when I first applied.

0 coins

Oh no, that's what I'm worried about! How did you finally get through?

0 coins

I actually found this service called Claimyr that calls Washington ESD for you and gets you connected to an agent. Saved me so much time and frustration. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

Is that legit? I'm always skeptical of third-party services for government stuff.

Make sure you apply as soon as possible! There's a waiting period before benefits start and it's not retroactive to when you lost your job. I made the mistake of waiting two weeks thinking I'd find something quickly.

0 coins

Good to know! I was planning to spend this week just applying to jobs but I'll file the claim first.

0 coins

Yeah definitely don't wait. Even if you think you might not qualify, it's better to apply and find out than miss out on benefits you're entitled to.

just a heads up the system is really picky about everything being exactly right. like if you put the wrong dates or mess up your employer info it can delay everything for weeks

0 coins

What kind of info do I need to have ready before I start the application?

0 coins

You'll need your Social Security number, employment history for the last 18 months (including employer names, addresses, dates worked, and reason for separation), and any separation documents like termination letters.

The work search requirement is no joke btw. You have to do 3 activities every week and they can audit you at any time. I got selected for a review and had to provide detailed documentation of every job I applied to.

0 coins

That sounds stressful! What counts as a valid job search activity?

0 coins

Job applications, contacting employers directly, attending job fairs, networking events, career counseling sessions, skills assessments. Just make sure you keep detailed records with dates and specifics.

I use WorkSourceWA to track mine since it's integrated with the Washington ESD system. Makes it easier when you file your weekly claims.

One thing that tripped me up - you have to be 'able and available' for work. That means you can't be too sick to work, can't be unavailable during normal business hours, and can't turn down suitable work offers.

0 coins

What defines 'suitable work'? Can they make me take any job?

0 coins

Generally it's work that matches your skills and pays at least 70% of your previous wage, but the longer you're unemployed the more flexibility they expect. After 5 weeks they can consider jobs paying less.

0 coins

WASHINGTON ESD IS THE WORST. I've been waiting 6 weeks for my claim to be processed and every time I call they just say 'it's under review' with no timeline. The whole system is broken.

0 coins

Are you stuck in adjudication? That's usually what causes the long delays.

0 coins

Yeah something about verifying my identity even though I sent all the documents they asked for. It's ridiculous.

0 coins

This is exactly why I recommend Claimyr - you can actually talk to a human at Washington ESD to get status updates instead of waiting forever. Check out claimyr.com

Don't forget you might qualify for other programs too depending on your situation. If you're going to school or need retraining, there might be additional benefits available through WorkSource.

0 coins

I wasn't planning on school but if it helps with benefits that might be worth looking into.

0 coins

The Training Benefits program can extend your unemployment if you're in an approved training program. Definitely worth checking out if you want to learn new skills.

0 coins

make sure u have direct deposit set up otherwise they mail u a debit card and that takes forever. learned that the hard way

0 coins

Good tip! I'll make sure to set that up when I apply.

0 coins

The weekly claim filing is really important too - you have to file every week even if you haven't heard back about your initial claim. Miss a week and you lose those benefits permanently.

0 coins

When do you file the weekly claims? Is there a specific day?

0 coins

You can file starting Sunday for the previous week. I always do mine Sunday morning so I don't forget. The system is usually less busy then too.

0 coins

Just want to add that being laid off definitely qualifies you, but if you quit or got fired for misconduct that's different. Sounds like you're good though since it was store closures.

0 coins

Yeah it was definitely not my choice! The whole chain is closing down unfortunately.

0 coins

That's actually perfect for unemployment purposes - no question about eligibility when it's a business closure.

0 coins

One more thing - if you do any part-time or freelance work while collecting benefits, you HAVE to report it. Even small amounts can affect your weekly benefit amount.

0 coins

What if I pick up a few shifts somewhere? Does that disqualify me completely?

0 coins

No, you can work part-time but they'll reduce your weekly benefit based on how much you earn. There's a formula they use - I think you can earn up to about $200 without any reduction.

0 coins

The maximum weekly benefit amount in Washington is $929 right now, but most people get way less than that. It's based on your previous earnings so with retail wages you're probably looking at maybe $300-400 per week.

0 coins

That would actually help a lot with my rent and bills while I'm looking for something new.

0 coins

Yeah it's not amazing but it definitely helps bridge the gap. Just remember it's taxable income so you might want to have taxes withheld.

0 coins

I had trouble with the Washington ESD website constantly logging me out and losing my progress. Super frustrating when you're trying to complete the application.

0 coins

Ugh that sounds annoying. Any tips for dealing with the website issues?

0 coins

Save your progress frequently if there's an option, and try using a different browser if one isn't working. Sometimes clearing your cache helps too.

0 coins

The identity verification process can be a pain if you don't have all the right documents. They want very specific things and if you submit the wrong format it gets rejected.

0 coins

What documents do they typically want for identity verification?

0 coins

Usually a photo ID, Social Security card, and some kind of address verification like a utility bill. But if you get flagged for additional verification they might want tax returns or pay stubs too.

0 coins

Pro tip: if you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD by phone, try calling right when they open at 8 AM or during lunch hours when call volume might be lower.

0 coins

I'll try that if I need to call them. Hopefully the online application works smoothly.

0 coins

I tried calling at 8 AM sharp and still waited 2 hours. That's when I ended up using Claimyr and got through in like 10 minutes.

0 coins

Remember you have to actively look for work that's similar to what you did before, at least initially. They won't expect you to take a huge pay cut right away but you can't just apply for dream jobs that you're not qualified for.

0 coins

That makes sense. I'll focus on other retail positions and maybe some customer service roles since that's my background.

0 coins

File your claim this week for sure! The process takes time and you want to get the ball rolling. Even if there are delays, at least you'll be in the system. Good luck with everything!

Thanks everyone! This thread has been super helpful. I'm going to apply today and start my job search. Really appreciate all the advice.
