Don't forget that your benefit amount is also subject to federal and state taxes. Washington doesn't have state income tax but you'll still owe federal taxes on unemployment benefits. You can have taxes withheld automatically or pay them when you file your return.
If you're still confused about your calculation, you can request a detailed breakdown from Washington ESD. They should be able to show you exactly which quarters they used and how they calculated your weekly benefit amount. Sometimes seeing the actual numbers helps it make more sense.
That's a great idea. I'll try to get that breakdown so I can see if everything looks correct. Thanks for all the helpful info everyone!
Don't forget you can't collect unemployment while you're getting vacation pay or severance pay. Well, you can collect but you have to report it and they'll reduce your benefits accordingly. Found that out the hard way!
The whole system makes more sense once you understand that it's insurance, not welfare. Employers pay in, workers who lose jobs through no fault of their own can claim benefits. It's actually a pretty smart system when it works properly.
If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD with questions, I've heard good things about Claimyr. My sister used them when she had issues with her partial unemployment calculations and they got her connected to an agent who walked her through everything.
Several people have mentioned Claimyr now. Sounds like it might be worth trying if I run into problems.
The partial unemployment program is actually one of the better parts of the Washington ESD system. It encourages work instead of discouraging it. Just be honest about your earnings and you should be fine.
For what it's worth, even when Extended Benefits were available during high unemployment, they were only 13-20 additional weeks. It's not like you get unlimited extensions.
Thanks everyone for all the info. This thread has been more helpful than anything I've found on the Washington ESD website.

One more resource - if you can't get through to Washington ESD directly, try using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. I used them last month for a different issue and they got me connected to an agent within a few hours instead of days of trying to call myself.

Just want to add that the 8 months of work you mentioned should definitely qualify you. I've seen people qualify with much less work history. The Washington ESD system is actually pretty reasonable once you understand how it works.
