The Washington ESD phone system is seriously broken. I gave up trying to call and used one of those callback services - Claimyr I think it was called. Finally got through to an agent who cleared up my adjudication issue in 10 minutes.
Someone recommended it on another forum. Their website claimyr.com has a video that explains how it works. Definitely worth checking out if you're stuck in phone hell like I was.
Bottom line: your employer has already paid for unemployment insurance coverage through their taxes. When you file for benefits, you're using insurance that's already been paid for, not asking your employer to write a check. File your claim and don't feel guilty about it.
One more tip - even if you think you might not qualify, it's worth applying anyway. Sometimes people are surprised and do qualify when they thought they wouldn't.
I'm dealing with a similar situation right now. Filed my claim two weeks ago and still waiting for a determination. The uncertainty is killing me! At least you're asking the right questions before filing instead of just hoping for the best like I did.
Not really. The online system just says 'pending' and I can't get through to anyone by phone. It's really frustrating.
This is exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier. The phone system is just overwhelmed and it's nearly impossible to get through during normal business hours.
Just to summarize the key points for the original poster: 1) You likely qualify based on your work history and reason for unemployment 2) File your claim as soon as possible online 3) Be prepared to actively search for work and document your activities 4) Keep detailed records of everything 5) Don't be discouraged if the process takes time - unemployment benefits are there to help people in exactly your situation.
Thanks everyone for clearing this up. I feel much more confident about filling out my forms now knowing unemployment is unearned income, not earned income.

One more thing - if you have any issues with your claim getting stuck in adjudication or need to talk to someone about eligibility questions, that Claimyr service really does help cut through the phone system hassles. Saved me hours of frustration.

•I'll definitely keep that in mind if I run into problems. Seems like a few people here have had good experiences with it.

Good luck with your application! The waiting is always nerve-wracking but it sounds like you have a solid case for eligibility.
