Social Security IRMAA appeal form (SSA-44) faxed - no confirmation on my SS account?

I sent my IRMAA appeal form (SSA-44) via fax to Social Security almost 3 weeks ago (January 11th) after my Medicare premium jumped by $230 due to a one-time capital gain in 2023. I've been checking my MySocialSecurity account daily, but there's absolutely no indication they received it or are processing it. No status update, no message, nothing! I thought the online portal was supposed to show the status of appeals and documents. Does anyone know how long it typically takes for an IRMAA appeal to show up in the system? Or is there a different way to confirm they received my fax? Really don't want to restart this whole process if they lost my paperwork.

Unfortunately, IRMAA appeals (SSA-44 forms) often don't show up in the MySocialSecurity portal. The IRMAA processing happens in a separate system that doesn't always communicate with the online account interface. In my experience, you should expect 4-6 weeks for processing, but you won't see updates online. The best way to confirm receipt is to call SSA directly at 1-800-772-1213 and ask them to check their imaging system for your faxed form.

Thanks for explaining this! That's frustrating they don't show the status online. I've tried calling that number 3 times but keep getting the "all representatives are busy" message and then disconnected. Is there a better time of day to call?

i went through this EXACT same issue last year!!! my premium went up $180 because i sold a rental property. THE WORST PART is they dont tell you ANYTHING about the status!! i ended up calling every day for 2 weeks straight and finally got through to someone who confirmed they got my fax but said it would take "6-8 weeks" to process. total nightmare!!!

Did your IRMAA appeal eventually get approved? I'm planning to submit mine next month after selling some stocks and I'm worried about the whole process.

yes it got approved after 7 WEEKS but they never communicated ANYTHING to me during that time!!! i had to call again to find out it was approved. then it took another 2 months to get my medicare premium adjusted back down. they did refund the overpayment eventually.

I'm a former SSA employee, and I can clarify a few things about IRMAA appeals with the SSA-44 form: 1. The MySocialSecurity portal doesn't show IRMAA appeals because they're processed by a dedicated unit that works with IRS data systems 2. Faxed documents typically take 3-5 business days to be scanned into their system 3. Current processing time for IRMAA appeals is 30-45 days due to high volume 4. You should receive an acknowledgment letter by mail within 2 weeks of receipt If you haven't received an acknowledgment letter yet, I would recommend calling to confirm receipt. Ask specifically for them to check the "IRMAA appeals processing queue" as that's where the SSA-44 forms are tracked.

This is incredibly helpful! I haven't received any acknowledgment letter yet, so now I'm really concerned they never got my fax. Looks like I need to find a way to get through on the phone. The mailbox for my local office is always full when I try calling there too.

I dealt with this same headache last year. After trying to call for days and getting nowhere, I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual SSA agent in under 10 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU When I finally got through, the agent confirmed they had received my SSA-44 but it hadn't been scanned into the system yet. They noted on my account that I had called to check status. My IRMAA appeal was approved about 5 weeks later. Definitely worth checking if they actually received your fax.

Is that service legit? Seems sketchy that you have to pay just to call Social Security! The government should make this easier!!

0 coins

It's definitely legitimate - they just help you navigate the phone system to avoid the endless waiting. I was skeptical too but it saved me hours of frustration. The agent I spoke with was a regular SSA employee. I've used it twice now when I needed to actually talk to someone.

I know this doesn't help now, but in the future always send important documents to SSA via certified mail with return receipt! I never trust faxes for anything important anymore after they lost my earnings correction request THREE TIMES. At least with certified mail you have proof they received it. Also keep copies of EVERYTHING.

0 coins

That's a good point about certified mail. I still have my copy of the SSA-44 form with all my documentation, so at least I can resubmit if needed. Just frustrating to potentially lose weeks of processing time if they misplaced it.

wait i'm confused... is IRMAA the same thing as the Medicare surcharge?? I thought that was from Medicare not Social Security??? Why are you even dealing with SSA for this??

0 coins

Good question. IRMAA (Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount) is a Medicare premium surcharge for higher-income beneficiaries, but it's administered by Social Security, not CMS. Social Security handles the determination, appeals, and processing of IRMAA amounts based on IRS tax data. That's why the SSA-44 form goes to Social Security, even though it affects your Medicare premium.

omg no wonder the system is so confusing!!! thanks for explaining that!

Update on IRMAA processing times - I just spoke with an SSA representative yesterday about my mother's IRMAA appeal, and they said current processing times are actually running closer to 8-10 weeks due to staffing shortages. The acknowledgment letters are also delayed. The rep suggested that if you haven't heard anything after 3 weeks, you should call to confirm receipt, but expect longer overall processing time.

0 coins

Thanks for the update! That's even more concerning. I'll definitely need to call and check if they received it. Really appreciate everyone's help here.

My neighbor had this SAME PROBLEM last year!!! The SSA claimed they NEVER GOT her fax even though she had a confirmation page!!! She had to resubmit everything and it took FOUR MONTHS to resolve!!! The system is COMPLETELY BROKEN!!!

I faxed mine in October and just got the approval letter last week. Never showed up on my online account. Just be patient, they're working on it even if you can't see it.

0 coins

That's somewhat reassuring. Did you ever call to confirm they received it, or did you just wait for the approval letter?

I called once after about 3 weeks and they confirmed they had it. Then I just waited. Nothing I could do to speed it up anyway.

As someone who just went through this process myself, I can confirm what others have said - the MySocialSecurity portal is basically useless for tracking IRMAA appeals. I submitted my SSA-44 in November after a similar situation (sold some inherited stocks that triggered the surcharge), and like you, saw absolutely nothing online for weeks. What finally worked for me was calling the main SSA number (1-800-772-1213) right when they open at 7 AM local time. I got through on the second try that way. The representative was able to see my form in their system even though it never appeared in my online account. She said the IRMAA unit operates almost entirely separate from the regular SSA systems. Since you're at 3 weeks now and haven't received an acknowledgment letter, I'd definitely recommend calling to verify receipt. If they can't find it, at least you'll know to resubmit before losing more time. The whole process is frustrating, but most people do eventually get their appeals approved if they have legitimate documentation of the income change.

This is really helpful advice about calling at 7 AM! I've been trying to call during lunch breaks and after work, which probably explains why I keep getting the busy signal. I'll definitely try first thing in the morning tomorrow. It's reassuring to hear that even though your appeal didn't show up online, the rep could still see it in their system. Gives me some hope that mine might actually be there too, just invisible to me. Thanks for sharing your experience!

I'm going through the exact same situation right now! Filed my IRMAA appeal in December after a rental property sale triggered a $190 premium increase, and like you, absolutely nothing shows up in my MySocialSecurity account. It's maddening how they have this whole online portal but it's completely useless for tracking the one thing you actually need to know about. Based on what I've learned from calling (finally got through last week using the 7 AM tip someone mentioned), the IRMAA processing really is completely separate from their regular systems. The rep told me they received my fax but it's sitting in a queue that could take 6-8 weeks to process. She also mentioned that even the acknowledgment letters are running 3-4 weeks behind because they're so backlogged. My advice: definitely call to confirm they have your fax, but don't expect any updates until you get that final decision letter in the mail. The whole system needs a serious overhaul - it's 2025 and we're still playing guessing games about whether our paperwork was received!

Thanks for sharing your experience! It's oddly comforting to know I'm not the only one dealing with this black hole of information. The fact that you got through and confirmed they received your fax gives me hope that mine might actually be in their system too, even though we can't see it. I'll definitely try the 7 AM calling strategy - seems like that's the magic time everyone recommends. It's just so frustrating that in 2025 we have to play detective to figure out if the government received our paperwork! At least knowing it could take 6-8 weeks helps set realistic expectations. Did the rep give you any sense of where you were in the queue, or was it just "we have it and you'll hear eventually"?

I'm dealing with this exact same frustration right now! Filed my IRMAA appeal (SSA-44) in late December after a 401k rollover triggered a massive premium increase, and just like everyone else here, absolutely zero visibility in the MySocialSecurity portal. It's like the form just disappeared into a black hole. Reading through all these experiences, it's clear this is a systemic issue with how SSA handles IRMAA appeals. The fact that they have separate systems that don't communicate with each other in 2025 is honestly ridiculous. I'm going to try the 7 AM calling strategy that several people mentioned - seems like that's the only reliable way to confirm they actually received the paperwork. Thanks to everyone who shared their timelines and experiences. At least now I know that 6-8 weeks (or longer) is normal, even though it's incredibly stressful to be in limbo about whether they even have your appeal. The acknowledgment letter delay explains why I haven't received anything yet either. This whole process really needs to be modernized!

I'm in a very similar boat - submitted my IRMAA appeal in early January after a stock sale created a one-time spike in my income, and the silence from SSA has been deafening! Like you said, it really does feel like the form just vanished into thin air. The MySocialSecurity portal might as well not exist for IRMAA appeals. I've been following this thread closely and everyone's experiences are so helpful. The 7 AM calling strategy seems to be the consensus "hack" for actually getting through to a human. I'm planning to try it tomorrow morning since I'm now at the 3+ week mark with no acknowledgment letter either. What's really frustrating is that we're all dealing with legitimate one-time income events (property sales, 401k rollovers, stock sales) but we're stuck in this information void wondering if our appeals will even be processed. The system definitely needs a complete overhaul - basic tracking and communication shouldn't be this difficult in 2025!

I'm currently going through this exact same nightmare! Submitted my SSA-44 form via fax on January 8th after a retirement account distribution caused my Medicare premium to jump $265, and like everyone else here, there's absolutely no trace of it in my MySocialSecurity account. After reading through all these experiences, it's clear that the IRMAA appeal system is completely broken from a transparency standpoint. The fact that we all have to resort to calling at 7 AM just to confirm our paperwork was received is absolutely unacceptable for a government service in 2025. I tried calling multiple times over the past two weeks during normal business hours and kept getting disconnected after being on hold forever. Based on everyone's advice here, I'm going to try the early morning calling strategy tomorrow. It's ridiculous that we have to figure out these "hacks" just to get basic information about our own appeals. The most frustrating part is that these are all legitimate one-time income events that clearly qualify for IRMAA relief, but we're stuck in this information black hole wondering if our appeals are even being processed. Thanks to everyone for sharing their experiences - at least now I know the 6-8+ week timeline is unfortunately normal, even if it's completely unreasonable.

Welcome to the IRMAA appeal frustration club! Your experience sounds exactly like what the rest of us are going through. I submitted mine around the same time as you (mid-January) for a similar one-time capital gain situation, and I'm also seeing absolutely nothing in my MySocialSecurity account. The 7 AM calling strategy really does seem to be the only way to get through - I finally managed to confirm my fax was received using that method after weeks of failed attempts during regular hours. It's honestly embarrassing that we have to crowdsource these workarounds just to interact with our own government agency! What strikes me most about reading everyone's stories here is how common these legitimate one-time income spikes are (property sales, retirement distributions, stock sales, etc.), yet SSA's system treats us like we're trying to game the system. The lack of basic communication and tracking is just inexcusable in 2025. Hang in there - based on everyone's timelines, we should hopefully hear something in the next few weeks, even if the process is completely opaque!

I'm dealing with this exact same situation right now! Filed my IRMAA appeal (SSA-44) about 10 days ago after selling some inherited property that caused my Medicare Part B premium to spike by $174. Like everyone else here, absolutely nothing shows up in my MySocialSecurity account - it's like the form just vanished into thin air. Reading through all these experiences has been both reassuring and frustrating. Reassuring because I now know this communication blackout is completely normal (unfortunately), but frustrating because it's 2025 and we're still dealing with government systems that operate in silos with zero transparency. I'm definitely going to try the 7 AM calling strategy that multiple people have recommended. It's ridiculous that we have to figure out these "hacks" just to get basic confirmation that our paperwork was received, but it seems like that's the reality we're dealing with. Thanks to everyone who shared their timelines and experiences - knowing that 6-8+ weeks is typical (even though it's unreasonable) at least helps set expectations. The fact that even the acknowledgment letters are running 3-4 weeks behind explains why I haven't received anything yet. This whole system desperately needs modernization!

Welcome to the club of IRMAA appeal limbo! Your situation with the inherited property sale sounds frustratingly familiar - it's amazing how many of us are dealing with these legitimate one-time income spikes that trigger the Medicare surcharge. I'm also relatively new to this process (submitted my appeal about 2 weeks ago for a similar capital gains situation), and like you, I was initially shocked by the complete lack of visibility in the MySocialSecurity portal. Reading through everyone's experiences here has been incredibly eye-opening. The 7 AM calling strategy seems to be the universal solution that actually works - I haven't tried it yet myself, but based on how many people have had success with it, I'm definitely planning to give it a shot this week. It's honestly mind-boggling that in 2025 we need to resort to these kinds of workarounds just to confirm basic receipt of government paperwork! What gives me some hope is that despite the terrible communication and antiquated systems, most people here eventually got their appeals approved. It's just the waiting and uncertainty that's so stressful. Hang in there - sounds like we're all in this together!

I'm going through the exact same situation and it's driving me crazy! I submitted my IRMAA appeal (SSA-44) about 2.5 weeks ago after a stock option exercise from my old job triggered a $210 premium increase, and just like everyone else here, there's absolutely zero indication in my MySocialSecurity account that they even received it. What's been most helpful from reading all these responses is learning about the 7 AM calling strategy - I had no idea that timing made such a difference! I've been trying to call during my lunch breaks and always get the "all representatives are busy" message followed by disconnection. Definitely going to try calling right when they open tomorrow morning. It's honestly shocking that in 2025, a major government agency operates with such a complete lack of transparency. The fact that we all have to become amateur detectives just to confirm our paperwork was received is completely unacceptable. At least knowing that 6-8+ weeks is unfortunately normal helps me set realistic expectations, even though the whole system desperately needs to be modernized. Thanks to everyone for sharing their experiences - it's oddly comforting to know I'm not alone in this frustrating limbo!

I'm in the exact same boat! Filed my IRMAA appeal about 3 weeks ago after a one-time IRA conversion caused my premium to jump $195, and like everyone else, absolutely nothing shows up online. The MySocialSecurity portal is completely useless for this. I tried the 7 AM calling strategy this morning after reading about it here and actually got through on the first try! The rep confirmed they have my fax in their imaging system but said it's in the IRMAA processing queue with no specific timeline. She couldn't give me a position in line or anything, just "you'll get a letter when it's decided." What's really frustrating is that these are all legitimate one-time income events that clearly qualify for relief, but we're stuck in this information black hole for months. The rep also mentioned that even if approved, it can take another 4-6 weeks for Medicare to actually adjust the premiums back down. The whole system needs a complete overhaul - basic status tracking shouldn't be this impossible in 2025! At least now I know they have my paperwork, so I can stop worrying about them losing it. Hang in there everyone - sounds like we just have to wait it out unfortunately.
