EDD appeal confirmation - how to know if they received my DE 1000M form?

I mailed my appeal form (DE 1000M) last Tuesday after getting disqualified for allegedly not reporting income from a side gig. I sent it through regular mail because I was out of printer ink and couldn't make a copy to keep for my records. It's been 8 days and I'm getting really anxious because I don't see any updates in my UI Online account and don't know if they received it. Is there a way to check if EDD got my appeal? Does the system update to show pending appeals? I'm worried it got lost in the mail and I'll miss my 30-day deadline to appeal. Help!

just call them lol that's what I did

I've tried calling for two days straight. Either get the 'too many callers' message or wait on hold for an hour then get disconnected. So frustrating!

The UI Online system doesn't show appeals status - that's handled by a separate department. You need to wait about 10-14 days for processing, then you'll receive a letter acknowledging receipt of your appeal with your case number and hearing date (usually scheduled 4-6 weeks out). For future reference, always send appeals via certified mail with return receipt so you have proof of delivery. If you're approaching your 30-day deadline with no confirmation, call the Appeals Division directly at 1-800-300-5616 and select the appeals option in the menu.

Thank you so much! I didn't realize UI Online wouldn't show it. I'll wait a few more days for the letter, but it's good to know there's a dedicated appeals number too.

I went through this exact thing in January! So stressful. Mine took 12 days to get acknowledged. You'll get a letter in the mail with a case number and instructions for the hearing. Don't worry too much yet, they're just slow with everything.

That's reassuring to hear someone else went through this. Did you win your appeal? Mine was for a side gig I actually DID report but they somehow missed it in their system.

Yeah I won! My situation was different (they said I didn't provide identity docs but I did) but the hearing was actually pretty fair. Make sure you gather all your evidence NOW while you wait - I forgot some important screenshots and regretted it later.

This appeal system is deliberately broken to discourage people from fighting disqualifications. They WANT you to give up. The whole "we don't track appeals online" thing is just another way to keep you in the dark. I've been through THREE appeals with EDD in the last few years and they've lost my paperwork TWICE!!! Had to restart the whole process. The system is DESIGNED to make you fail.

While I understand your frustration, it's important to note that the appeals process is actually separate from EDD - it's run by the California Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board (CUIAB), which is why it doesn't show up in UI Online. They're actually pretty good about processing appeals, but yes, the mail delay is real. OP - If you're really concerned, you can also email CUIAB at support@cuiab.ca.gov with your name, last 4 of SSN, and approximate date you mailed the appeal. Sometimes they respond faster than calling.

I don't have a fax machine but that would've been smart! I should've taken a picture of it at least before sending. Lesson learned!

I was in this exact situation last month trying to check if my appeal was received. After endless busy signals and disconnects, I found this service called Claimyr that connected me to an EDD rep in about 20 minutes. They bypassed the phone tree somehow and I was able to confirm my appeal was in the system. Saved me so much stress! Their site is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km The rep told me appeals take 7-10 business days to process and then CUIAB handles it from there. At least I could stop worrying about whether they received it.

Thanks for sharing this! After trying 40+ calls today and getting nowhere, I'm definitely going to check this out. I just need to know if they received my form before I have a heart attack from stress.

Just a heads up - when your appeal is acknowledged, you'll receive what's called an 'Acknowledgment of Appeal' letter with your case number and instructions. Later you'll get a 'Notice of Hearing' with your hearing date/time about 4-6 weeks out. For the hearing itself, gather these documents to support your case: - Copies of your certification forms showing you reported the income - Any pay stubs or invoices from the side gig - Bank statements showing the deposits - A timeline of when you reported the income Remember that EDD has to prove you willfully misreported, so if you can show you attempted to report correctly, you have a good chance of winning.

This is incredibly helpful, thank you! I'll start organizing all this documentation now. Do you know if the hearings are still mostly being conducted by phone because of COVID, or are they back to in-person?

Most hearings are still being done by phone as of 2025, though you can request in-person if you prefer. Phone hearings are generally more convenient and have the same success rates. Make sure your phone has good reception wherever you plan to take the call!

Has anyone gotten their hearing decision overturned recently? Mine got scheduled for next month and I'm super nervous...

This is a bit off-topic from the original question about checking appeal receipt. Perhaps start your own thread about hearing success rates? I'm sure many people would have input on that topic.

UPDATE: I was able to get through to EDD using that Claimyr service someone mentioned. The rep confirmed they received my appeal on Friday (4 days ago) and it's being processed! Such a relief. She said I should get the acknowledgment letter within 7-10 business days. Thanks everyone for your help and advice!

Great news! Now you can focus on preparing your evidence for the hearing. Good luck with your appeal!
