Missing 2025 IRMAA notification from Social Security - how to find out my Medicare premium

Has anyone else not received their IRMAA determination letter for 2025 Medicare premiums? I usually get something in the mail by mid-November, but it's now December and I've heard nothing. I've checked my mySocialSecurity account and my Medicare portal and there's no information about what my Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount will be. I need to budget for next year and have no idea if I'll be paying standard premiums or higher amounts! My income did increase significantly in 2023 (sold some investments), so I'm expecting to pay more, but the silence is making me anxious. I've tried calling SSA twice but got disconnected after 45+ minutes on hold each time. How can I find out what my Medicare premiums will be for 2025?

The SSA is running about 3-4 weeks behind schedule on IRMAA determination letters this year. I'm a financial advisor with several clients in the same situation. The good news is that you can estimate your IRMAA using your 2023 tax return (that's what they base 2025 premiums on). If your MAGI (Modified Adjusted Gross Income) from 2023 was: - Under $103,000 (single) or $206,000 (married): standard premium only - $103,000-$129,000 (single) or $206,000-$258,000 (married): +$71.60/month - $129,000-$161,000 (single) or $258,000-$322,000 (married): +$179.10/month - And so on up the scale If you need the exact amount, you'll need to keep trying to reach SSA until you get through. But the online calculators can give you a good estimate based on your 2023 tax return numbers.

Thank you for this information! That explains the delay. Using those thresholds, I'm definitely going to be in the second tier based on my 2023 income. At least now I can budget for the additional $71.60/month. Still frustrating that they're behind schedule and not communicating about it. Is there any chance of appealing the IRMAA since my income will be much lower in 2024 and 2025?

Thanks for the suggestion. I've checked my spam folder daily (I'm kind of obsessive about that) and nothing there. I did look at Medicare.gov but couldn't find the information anywhere in my account. I'll check again though - maybe I missed something!

You can file an IRMAA appeal using Form SSA-44 if you've had a life-changing event that lowered your income. Qualifying events include: - Death of spouse - Marriage/divorce - Work reduction or stoppage - Loss of income from income-producing property - Loss of pension income Just selling fewer investments doesn't qualify, but if you've actually retired or lost income in a qualifying way, you might be able to appeal. The form is available on SSA.gov and you'll need documentation proving your reduced income.

This is really helpful information, thanks! I actually did retire in 2024 (that's why I sold investments in 2023, to prepare financially). So it sounds like I could file this appeal once I get my determination letter. I appreciate knowing about this option!

I was in the same boat last year - no letter by December and panicking about my budget. I finally got tired of waiting on hold and used a service called Claimyr to get through to SSA. You can check them out at claimyr.com - they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU. Basically they wait on hold for you then call you when an agent is ready. It worked great and I got my IRMAA info right away. The SSA rep told me my letter had been generated but was delayed in processing.

Does this actually work?? I've been trying to reach SSA for 3 weeks about my husband's missing benefits check and I swear they hang up on me after I wait for an hour!! So fed up with the whole system!!

Yes, it worked for me - I was skeptical too but was desperate after multiple disconnects. The call-back came about 90 minutes after I signed up. Definitely better than me sitting with the phone to my ear for hours.

THIS IS ALL SO TYPICAL OF SSA!!!!! They expect us to plan our finances but don't bother to send information on time. I'm STILL waiting for mine too and my financial advisor says lots of her clients haven't gotten letters yet. But God forbid WE are late with something - then they penalize US immediately!!! The whole system is rigged against seniors and nobody cares. They'll probably send the letters right after New Year when it's TOO LATE to plan for 2025 expenses.

Totally agree. Every year it's something different with them. My neighbor got her letter weeks ago but I'm still waiting. Makes no sense.

For those still waiting, I just spoke with an SSA representative yesterday about another matter, and they mentioned that IRMAA letters are being sent out in batches this year due to processing delays. They're prioritizing people with changes to their IRMAA status. If your income bracket hasn't changed from last year, you might be in a later batch. Call the dedicated Medicare premium line at 1-800-772-1213 and select the Medicare premium option, which often has shorter wait times than the general SSA line.

Thank you for this update! My income bracket definitely changed (went up significantly due to those investment sales), so maybe I'll be in an earlier batch. I'll try the specific Medicare premium line - didn't know that was an option. Really appreciate everyone's help here!

my sister had this problem too but her accountant told her just assume worst case scenario for budgeting which is what im doing too. btw if anyone is confused IRMAA is just the extra amount higher income people pay for medicare part b and part d its so confusing why they dont just call it a surcharge or something normal lol

UPDATE: I finally received my IRMAA determination letter today (Dec 14). As many of you predicted, I'm in the second tier with the $71.60 surcharge on top of the regular premium. I'm going to file the SSA-44 form to appeal based on my retirement this year. Thanks to everyone for your helpful advice!

Glad you received it! Good luck with the appeal. Just make sure you include solid documentation of your retirement and expected income reduction. SSA is pretty careful about verifying these appeals, but with proper documentation, many of my clients have been successful.

Congratulations on finally getting your letter! I'm still waiting for mine and it's reassuring to hear they are actually being sent out. For anyone else dealing with IRMAA appeals, I went through this process last year after my spouse passed away. The key is to submit Form SSA-44 as soon as possible along with copies of all supporting documents (in my case it was the death certificate and tax returns showing reduced income). The process took about 8 weeks but they did approve the reduction and even refunded the extra premiums I had already paid. Don't give up if they initially deny it - you can request reconsideration with additional documentation.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the appeal process, Diego. It's really helpful to know that refunds are possible for premiums already paid - I hadn't realized that! Eight weeks seems reasonable given how slow everything moves with SSA. Sorry for your loss, but glad the appeal worked out for you. This gives me confidence that my retirement-based appeal has a good chance of success.

I'm dealing with the same issue! Haven't received my IRMAA letter yet and it's making it really hard to plan my 2025 budget. My income situation is similar - had some significant capital gains in 2023 from selling property, so I know I'm going to owe more but have no idea how much. Reading through everyone's responses here has been super helpful, especially knowing about the processing delays and the Medicare premium hotline. I'm going to try calling 1-800-772-1213 tomorrow and see if I can get through. It's so frustrating that they expect us to manage our finances responsibly but can't get their own paperwork out on time!

I'm in exactly the same boat! Also sold property in 2023 and still waiting for my letter. The uncertainty is the worst part - I've been setting aside what I think will be enough for the higher premiums but have no idea if it's accurate. One thing that helped me was using the IRMAA calculator on the Medicare.gov website to get a rough estimate based on my 2023 tax return. It's not perfect but at least gives you a ballpark figure to work with for budgeting. Hope you have better luck with the phone line than I did - maybe the dedicated Medicare number will actually work!

I'm a newcomer to this community but dealing with the exact same frustrating situation! Haven't received my IRMAA letter either and it's now mid-December. After reading through all these helpful responses, I'm feeling much more informed about what's going on. It's reassuring to know that SSA is running behind schedule this year and I'm not the only one affected. I'm particularly grateful for the income thresholds that Nia provided - that helps me estimate where I'll likely fall. I had some unexpected income in 2023 from a consulting project, so I'm bracing myself for higher premiums. Going to try the dedicated Medicare premium line at 1-800-772-1213 tomorrow morning. Thanks to everyone for sharing your experiences and advice - this community is incredibly helpful for navigating these government bureaucracy headaches!

Welcome to the community! You're definitely not alone in this frustrating situation. I'm also new here but have been dealing with the same IRMAA letter delay. After reading everyone's advice, I tried the Medicare premium hotline at 1-800-772-1213 this morning and actually got through after only 20 minutes on hold (much better than the general SSA line!). The representative was able to look up my estimated IRMAA amount based on my 2023 tax return, which gave me the exact figure I needed for budgeting. They confirmed that letters are still being processed in batches and should arrive by end of December. Might be worth giving them a call - it saved me weeks of uncertainty!

I'm new to this community but experiencing the exact same issue! My IRMAA letter still hasn't arrived and I'm getting really anxious about budgeting for 2025. My income jumped significantly in 2023 due to some stock sales, so I know I'm going to be hit with higher premiums but have no idea how much. Reading through all these responses has been incredibly helpful - especially learning about the processing delays and the dedicated Medicare premium line. I had no idea there was a separate number to call! I've been banging my head against the wall trying to get through the main SSA line. Going to try 1-800-772-1213 first thing tomorrow morning. It's so reassuring to know this is a widespread issue and not just me being forgotten by the system. Thanks to everyone for sharing your experiences and practical solutions!

Welcome to the community, Dylan! You're definitely in good company with this IRMAA letter situation - it seems like half the community is dealing with the same delay. I'm also new here but have found everyone's advice incredibly helpful. The dedicated Medicare premium line at 1-800-772-1213 that several people mentioned seems to be the real game-changer - much shorter wait times than the main SSA number. Since you had significant stock sales in 2023, you might want to use the income thresholds that Nia shared earlier to get a rough estimate while you're waiting. At least then you can start budgeting with a ballpark figure instead of being completely in the dark. Good luck with the call tomorrow!

As a new member here, I'm dealing with this exact same frustrating situation! Still haven't received my 2025 IRMAA letter and it's making financial planning impossible. My income increased substantially in 2023 due to some retirement account withdrawals, so I'm definitely expecting higher premiums but have no clue what to budget for. Reading through everyone's experiences here has been such a relief - I was starting to think SSA had lost my file completely! The information about processing delays and the dedicated Medicare premium hotline at 1-800-772-1213 is incredibly valuable. I had no idea there was a separate line with shorter wait times. Planning to call first thing Monday morning. It's so helpful to have a community where people share real solutions instead of just complaining. Thanks to everyone for the practical advice and income threshold estimates - at least now I can make some educated guesses for my 2025 budget while waiting for the official letter!

Welcome to the community, Diego! You're absolutely right that this situation is incredibly frustrating, especially when you're trying to be responsible about financial planning. I'm also new here and in the same boat - had a big income spike in 2023 from some property sales and still waiting for my IRMAA letter. The dedicated Medicare premium line at 1-800-772-1213 that everyone keeps mentioning seems to be the key to actually getting through to someone. I tried it yesterday after reading the advice here and got connected in about 25 minutes, which is a miracle compared to the main SSA line! The representative was able to give me my estimated IRMAA amount right over the phone, which was such a relief. Definitely worth trying on Monday morning - and don't give up if you get a busy signal at first, just keep calling back. Good luck!

I'm new to this community and facing the exact same IRMAA letter delay! Haven't received mine yet and it's driving me crazy trying to plan my 2025 budget. My situation is a bit different though - I had a one-time large inheritance in 2023 that pushed my income way up, but my regular income is actually quite modest. After reading all the helpful advice here, I'm definitely going to try the dedicated Medicare premium line at 1-800-772-1213 that everyone's recommending. It's such a relief to know this is a widespread issue and not just me! Quick question for those who've gotten through - when you call that Medicare premium line, do they ask for any specific information or documents, or can they look everything up just with your Social Security number? Want to make sure I'm prepared before I call. Thanks to everyone for sharing your experiences - this community is invaluable for navigating these bureaucratic nightmares!
