Social Security IRMAA reconsideration request stuck - call disconnecting when following up
Is anyone else having trouble with IRMAA reconsideration requests? I received notice back in January that my Medicare Part B premium would include a hefty IRMAA surcharge for 2025 (an extra $217/month!) based on my 2023 income. I submitted a Life-Changing Event reconsideration request online in February since I took early retirement in mid-2024 and my income dropped by more than 50%. It's been almost 2 months, and my MySocialSecurity account STILL shows the high IRMAA amount for my upcoming premiums. I finally got through to SSA this morning after multiple attempts, and the rep said a specialist would call me back in "30-45 minutes" - that was FIVE hours ago! Now when I try calling the 800 number again, the call disconnects immediately after I select the IRMAA option from the menu. Has anyone successfully resolved an IRMAA issue lately? Should I keep calling? Drive to my local office? Wait longer? I'm panicking because I can't afford this extra $2,600/year on my fixed retirement income!

I went through this exact situation last fall. The online reconsideration process for IRMAA is notoriously slow. In my experience, you need to: 1. Print Form SSA-44 (Medicare Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount - Life-Changing Event) and fill it out completely 2. Gather documentation proving your retirement (final paystub, employer letter, etc.) 3. Take everything IN PERSON to your local SSA office The online system for IRMAA adjustments has serious delays. When I finally went in person, they resolved it in about 15 minutes and my MySocialSecurity account updated the following week. The phone disconnection issue is happening to everyone - they're completely overwhelmed right now with IRMAA appeals.

•Thank you! I didn't realize I could just walk in with the form. I actually already filled out the SSA-44 online, but maybe they need the paper version? Did you need an appointment or could you just walk in to your local office?

•You shouldn't just pay it if you qualify for a reduction! The IRMAA surcharge is based on your tax returns from 2 years ago, but if you've had a qualifying life-changing event (retirement, death of spouse, divorce, etc.), you're entitled to an adjustment. Yes, their phone system is frustrating, but don't give up thousands of dollars because of it.

IRMAA reconsiderations are getting backed up because so many people who retired during the pandemic are now hitting the 2-year lookback period. I had a similar issue and found a service called Claimyr that got me through to a live SSA agent in about 10 minutes when I couldn't get through myself. Just Google "claimyr" - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU showing how it works. After I got through to SSA, they transferred me to the Medicare premium department and I got my IRMAA issue resolved within a week. Definitely worth checking out if you keep getting disconnected.

•I've used Claimyr twice - once for my own SSDI issue and once for my mom's retirement benefits question. It works exactly as advertised, though I'll warn you that even after Claimyr connects you, you might still wait on hold. The difference is you don't have to redial 50 times just to enter the hold queue.

Dealing with same problem right now lol. My income went down because I closed my business in 2023 but they're still using my 2021 income for IRMAA. Been trying to fix for 3 months now. Online system is useless.

•Business closure is definitely a qualifying life-changing event for IRMAA reconsideration. Make sure you're using Form SSA-44 specifically (not a general reconsideration form) and check box 2-F for "Work Reduction" or 2-H for "Loss of Income-Producing Property." Include documentation showing when your business closed - your last Schedule C filing can work for this.

To directly answer your questions: 1. No, don't expect a call tomorrow. If they disconnect you when calling back, it usually means their callback queue is full for the day. 2. The IRMAA reconsideration process typically takes 30-60 days to be fully processed and reflected in your Medicare premium amount. Your MySocialSecurity account is usually the last place to update. 3. The most efficient approach is to visit your local office with a completed SSA-44 form and documentation of your retirement (last paystub, employer letter confirming retirement date, etc.). 4. If you submitted online, they should have the information, but the processing is significantly delayed compared to in-person requests. The IRMAA determination is technically made by SSA but affects your Medicare Part B (and D if applicable) premiums. The system disconnecting you when you call about IRMAA specifically suggests they're being flooded with similar requests.

•This is incredibly helpful - thank you! I think I'll try both approaches. I'll keep my online request active but also go to the local office with my paperwork as backup. I was already planning to bring my last paystub and the letter from HR showing my retirement date and final pension amount. Hopefully that's sufficient documentation.

•Ugh, that sounds like a nightmare. Thanks for the warning - I'll definitely bring everything I can think of. Tax returns, last paystub, retirement letter, birth certificate, the works!

I work with Social Security issues professionally, and IRMAA reconsiderations are particularly backlogged right now. Here's what you need to understand: 1. The reconsideration is processed by a specialized unit, not regular SSA staff 2. Your MySocialSecurity account won't show the adjustment until after it's fully processed and CMS has been notified 3. Even after approval, there's a lag before your Medicare premium is adjusted The best approach is two-pronged: keep your online request active (don't submit another one), but also take your documentation to your local office and ask them to add it to your pending request. This creates a "critical case" flag that often expedites processing. And don't panic - if your reconsideration is approved, you'll receive a refund for any excess premiums paid during processing.

•This is so reassuring! Quick question - once it's approved, do they just send a check for the overpayment or do they adjust future payments?

•It depends on how you receive your Social Security benefits. If your Medicare premium is deducted from monthly SS payments, they'll typically increase your next payment to include the refund. If you pay your Medicare premium separately (direct billing), you'll receive a refund check or direct deposit.

not sure if this helps but I had same issue last year. what finally worked was sending a fax (yes a fax in 2025 lol) to the IRMAA processing center with my SSA-44 form and all my docs. got fixed in 2 weeks after months of calling.

•Do you happen to remember the fax number you used? I might try this approach too - I'll try anything at this point!

One more tip that might help others reading this thread: If you're planning to retire or expect a significant income drop, you can be proactive about IRMAA. File the SSA-44 form as soon as the life-changing event occurs rather than waiting for the IRMAA notice. This often prevents the higher premium from ever being applied in the first place. For those already dealing with an IRMAA issue, persistence is key. Document every contact with SSA (date, time, representative name if possible) and keep copies of everything you submit. If visiting your local office, arrive at least 30 minutes before opening to minimize wait times.
