TWC account locked after identity theft - how long for unlocking after submitting form?
So frustrated right now! Someone apparently used my SSN to file a fraudulent unemployment claim with TWC (found out when I got a weird tax document). When I tried to log in to report it, the system said my account was locked due to suspected identity theft. I filled out and submitted the ID theft form on the TWC website last Thursday. Has anyone dealt with this nightmare before? How long does it typically take for them to unlock my account after submitting the form? I need to file a legitimate claim now but can't even get into the system! Been calling for 3 days straight and just get busy signals...

This happened to me back in January. After I submitted the identity theft form, it took about 3 weeks for them to fully review my case and unlock my account. They're dealing with a TON of these cases right now. Make sure you also filed a police report and reported it to the FTC at identitytheft.gov - TWC asked me for both reference numbers during the process.

•3 WEEKS?! That's crazy! I can't wait that long! Did they at least contact you during those 3 weeks to let you know they were working on it? I did file the police report already but didn't know about the FTC thing - will do that now, thanks.

I work as an employment counselor and see this frequently. Identity theft cases require multiple verification steps that unfortunately take time. The standard processing time is 14-21 business days. Here's what you should do while waiting: 1. Follow up with a secure message through the TWC portal (if you can access this part) 2. Document all your call attempts 3. Contact your state representative's office - they can often expedite these cases 4. Continue your work search activities and document them so you can backdate your claim once resolved Also, check your credit reports at annualcreditreport.com to ensure no other accounts have been compromised.

•Thank you for this detailed information! I can't access ANY part of the TWC portal, that's the problem. How do I document work search when I can't even file a claim? Should I just keep a spreadsheet or something? And great idea about contacting my state rep - I'll try that tomorrow.

•Yes, keep detailed records of all your work search activities in a spreadsheet or notebook. Include the date, employer name, position, application method, contact information, and any follow-up. TWC can add these retroactively once your account is unlocked. For the state representative, have your TWC confirmation number from the identity theft form submission ready when you contact them.

I had EXACTLY the same issue last month! After trying for days to reach someone at TWC and getting nothing but busy signals, I found Claimyr (claimyr.com) and it was a LIFESAVER. They got me connected to a TWC agent in about 20 minutes when I hadn't been able to get through for days. The agent was able to verify my identity over the phone and expedite my case. Still took about a week to fully resolve, but way better than 3+ weeks of waiting. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/V-IMvH88P1U?si=kNxmh025COIlIzKh

•This sounds promising! Did you have to provide them with a lot of personal info? I'm a little hesitant after already dealing with identity theft...

•I totally understand being cautious! They don't need access to your TWC account or anything - they just help you skip the phone queue. When they connect you, you're talking directly to the actual TWC agents, not to Claimyr. It's basically just a way to bypass the busy signals. Definitely helped my anxiety levels after days of failed calling.

While you're waiting for account access, I'd recommend taking these additional steps: 1. Place a fraud alert on your credit reports through any of the three major bureaus (Experian, Equifax, TransUnion) 2. Consider freezing your credit to prevent further fraud 3. Notify your bank and other financial institutions 4. Change passwords for any accounts using similar credentials Identity theft often goes beyond just unemployment fraud. When my account was compromised, the thieves had attempted to open credit cards in my name as well. Better to be proactive!

•Thank you - I've done most of these already but hadn't thought about changing passwords on accounts with similar credentials. Good point. Did TWC ever tell you exactly how your information was compromised in the first place?

•No, TWC never specified how my information was compromised. Their standard response was that my data was likely part of a larger breach. In my case, I later discovered my information was exposed in a healthcare provider breach that happened months earlier. These criminals often sit on the data for a while before using it.

THE ENTIRE TWC SYSTEM IS A JOKE!!! I've been fighting identity theft issues with them since DECEMBER! Multiple forms submitted, hours wasted on calls, still not resolved. They keep saying "2-3 weeks" but it's been MONTHS. Don't hold your breath waiting for them to help you. The fraud department is understaffed and overwhelmed. I finally had to get a lawyer involved. This is absolutely RIDICULOUS!!

•That's extreme but not unheard of. However, most cases are resolved within 3-4 weeks. Did you submit all the required documentation? I noticed many people forget to include the police report reference number on their forms, which can delay processing.

•YES I submitted EVERYTHING correctly the first time! Police report, FTC report, identity verification, the works. The problem is they keep "losing" my documents or claiming they never received them, then I have to start all over again. It's a bureaucratic nightmare and I'm convinced some of these TWC employees don't know what they're doing.

Update: I was finally able to get through to TWC this morning after using Claimyr! The agent I spoke with was actually really helpful and said they've expedited my case because I had all the documentation ready (police report, FTC report). She said it would still take 7-10 business days to complete their investigation, but at least now I have a case number and a direct extension to call back if needed. Thanks everyone for your suggestions! Will update again when it's resolved.

•Great news! Having a direct case number and contact is huge. Make sure to document the name of the agent you spoke with as well. Glad to hear things are moving in the right direction.
