Can't reset my 6-year-old TWC PIN - stuck in limbo for a month after layoff
I got laid off from my retail management job about 4 weeks ago and I'm seriously stressing out. I need to file for unemployment but I CANNOT get past the PIN issue. I set up an account with TWC back in 2019 during a brief layoff (got rehired after 2 months) and now I have absolutely no idea what PIN I used. I've tried all my usual combinations and nothing works. I've called the TWC phone line at least 15 times over the past month - always get a busy signal or it hangs up on me after the automated message. I've submitted FOUR contact requests through their website and haven't heard anything back. Meanwhile my savings are disappearing fast and rent is due next week. Does anyone know a reliable way to actually reach a human being who can reset my PIN? Or is there some other way to create a new account? I'm super desperate at this point and can't afford to keep waiting.

I went through this exact nightmare last year! The TWC website is absolutely worthless for PIN resets if you don't remember your security questions. You NEED to talk to an actual person. The best way is to call right when they open at 7:00 AM - like literally be dialing at 6:59. That's how I finally got through after trying for weeks. Just keep calling every morning until you get through. Good luck!

•Thank you! I'll try the early morning trick tomorrow. Did you have to verify your identity all over again when you finally reached someone?

•It's so frustrating! Have you gotten it resolved yet? I feel like I'm just shouting into the void with these contact requests.

Most people don't know this but you can actually use the ID.me verification process to reset your account access. Go through the identity verification process first (you'll need your driver's license and social security number), and once that's completed you can request a new PIN through the account recovery process. It's not obvious on their website but it's faster than waiting for a callback that might never come. Also, you need to be requesting payment while you're sorting this out! Even if you can't access your account, you're still eligible from your layoff date, but you need to be making those requests on time.

•Thank you so much! I had no idea about the ID.me option - I'll try that today. And I didn't realize I should be requesting payments already. Does that mean I've potentially lost weeks of benefits by not requesting them? Or can they backdate those requests once I get access?

•They can sometimes backdate your claim, but it's not guaranteed. You'll need to explain the PIN issue when you finally get through. Make sure you document all your attempts to contact them (dates/times of calls, confirmation numbers for contact requests). That will help your case for backdating.

I had this same problem back in 2020 during the pandemic and again last winter! PIN issues are like the top reason people can't file. The whole system is designed to be frustrating so people give up. Don't give up!

I had this EXACT problem two months ago. Tried for weeks to get through using the regular methods - complete waste of time. I finally used Claimyr to connect with TWC and got through to an agent in about 20 minutes. It was actually worth it because I was able to get my PIN reset and file my claim that same day. They have a demo video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/V-IMvH88P1U?si=kNxmh025COIlIzKh Once you get your PIN reset, make sure you write it down somewhere secure. Also, backdate your claim to your actual layoff date - the agent can help with that. The website is claimyr.com if you want to check it out.

•Is this a legit service? Seems sketchy to pay someone just to make a phone call for you. Does TWC actually approve of this?

•Thanks for the suggestion! I might try this if the morning calls and ID.me approach don't work this week. At this point I just need to get this resolved before I miss another rent payment.

•PREACH! The whole system is rigged to deny people benefits they deserve. It's not an accident that it's so hard to reach anyone.

Important: While you're trying to sort out the PIN issue, also create an account on WorkInTexas.com if you haven't already. You'll need to register there and start logging your work search activities (minimum 3 per week). Even if you can't request payment yet, you should be keeping records of your job search efforts from the date of your layoff. TWC might ask for these records later.

•Thank you for this tip! I didn't realize I needed to be logging work search activities already. Do I need my TWC PIN to create a WorkInTexas account? I've applied to about 6-7 jobs in the last month but haven't been tracking them carefully.

•No, you don't need your TWC PIN for WorkInTexas - it's a separate system, though they do connect eventually. Start tracking everything now, and try to remember the places you've already applied. You'll need company names, dates, contact info, position applied for, and application method (online, in-person, etc).

UPDATE: The ID.me verification alone won't automatically reset your PIN - it's just the first step. After completing ID.me verification, you still need to contact TWC to have them manually reset your PIN. But having the ID.me verification completed will speed up the process when you do reach an agent. Also, for anyone reading this with similar issues: If you've been laid off, file your initial claim IMMEDIATELY, even if you have to create a brand new account. You can sort out PIN/account merge issues later, but getting that initial claim dated properly is critical.

•Thanks for the update. I just completed the ID.me verification and you're right - it didn't automatically let me reset the PIN. I'll keep trying to call in the mornings. If I need to create a new account, will that cause problems with my old account? I'm worried about it looking like I'm trying to file two claims or something.

After you get this PIN issue resolved, make sure you set up Tele-Serv access as a backup. You can request payments by phone at 800-558-8321 if the website is down or you have login problems in the future. The TWC system is just a mess of different technologies that don't work well together. Some people have better luck with the phone system than the website. Also, if your previous employer doesn't contest your unemployment claim, you should get approved pretty quickly. The real delays happen when there's an employer dispute or some eligibility issue.

•That's really good to know about Tele-Serv. I'll definitely set that up as a backup once I can access my account. My employer actually told me they wouldn't contest the claim since it was a company-wide layoff, so hopefully that part will go smoothly at least.

UPDATE: I finally got it resolved! For anyone with similar problems in the future: I ended up using Claimyr this morning (the service someone mentioned above) and got connected to a TWC rep in about 30 minutes. The rep was able to reset my PIN, help me file my initial claim, AND backdate it to my actual layoff date four weeks ago. She said they've been having major system problems with PIN resets for the past month, which explains why none of my contact requests were answered. Now I just need to wait 2-3 weeks for the claim to process, but at least I'm in the system now! Thanks to everyone who offered advice. This has been incredibly stressful but I'm so relieved to finally have it submitted.

•That's great news! Make sure you set calendar reminders for your payment request days - they're every two weeks based on your claim date. Missing a payment request can cause big problems.
