PA UC disability claim stuck in 'pending' status - how long is normal wait time?

Just got let go from my nursing assistant job after exceeding allowed absences due to my chronic migraines. Filed for PA unemployment about 2 weeks ago and managed to clear most of the open issues (identity verification and employment history). But my claim's still showing 'pending' status for my most recent employer and my first weekly certification because I had to disclose my medical condition. The system flagged it with some disability-related issue code. Anyone know how long these special circumstance reviews typically take? I've tried calling the UC service center like 50+ times but keep getting busy signals or disconnected. This is my first time ever filing for unemployment and I'm getting really anxious about bills piling up. Is there any way to speed this up or talk to an actual person who can review my case? Any advice from people who've dealt with medical-related claims would be super helpful!

medical related claims can take WAY longer then normal ones. i had to wait almost 6 weeks when i filed last spring bc of my back injury. the system automatically flags anything health related for extra review, its so frustrating!!

6 weeks?! Oh no, I can't wait that long! Did you do anything that helped move your claim along faster?

Claims with medical/disability factors typically take 3-5 weeks for processing, sometimes longer if they need additional documentation. The examiner needs to determine if you're able and available for work despite your medical condition, which is a key eligibility requirement for PA UC benefits. Here's what you should do: 1. Make sure you've uploaded any doctor's notes or medical documentation that shows you CAN work despite your condition (very important) 2. Continue filing your weekly certifications even while waiting 3. Check your UC dashboard for any correspondence or questionnaires they may have sent 4. Answer "Yes" to being able and available for work on your weekly claims (if true) despite your medical condition The key issue they're likely examining is whether your migraines make you unavailable for work. If so, you might be directed toward disability benefits instead.

Thank you for the detailed explanation! I definitely can work - just needed accommodations my previous employer wasn't willing to provide. I've been answering yes to being able/available for work. Do you know if there's any way to directly contact an examiner about my specific case?

THEY DO THIS ON PURPOSE TO MAKE PEOPLE GIVE UP!!! I went thru this last yr when I got laid off with my back problems. They AUTOMATICALLY flag medical stuff hoping youll just go away. They make it IMPOSSIBLE to talk to anyone... I called 73 TIMES in one day before I got thru!!

This isn't entirely accurate. Medical issues require additional review because they need to determine if you're able to work, which is a basic requirement for unemployment eligibility. It's not a strategy to make people give up. But you're absolutely right about how difficult it is to reach someone - that part is frustratingly true.

I had success reaching PA UC by using Claimyr.com - it got me through to an agent in about 30 minutes when I was dealing with a medical issue on my claim. It costs a bit but saved me weeks of waiting. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2 that shows how it works. The agent was able to see exactly what was holding up my claim and told me what documentation to upload to resolve it. Way better than calling hundreds of times with no luck.

does this really work?? iv never heard of it before but im desperate to get thru to someone about my claim

Yes, it definitely worked for me. The service basically keeps dialing for you and gets you in the call queue. I was skeptical too but I was getting nowhere on my own after two weeks of trying.

make sure u dont accidentlly say ur not able to work bc of ur migrains when u do the weekly filing!!! my cousin got denied benefits for like 2 months cause she said she couldnt work that week cause of her back pain. its confusing cause u wanna be honest but if u say u cant work they will deny u for that week

Thanks for the tip! I've been careful about that and made sure to say I'm able/available for work. Just can't do certain types of jobs that would make my condition worse.

I went through something similar last year with my arthritis. What finally worked was sending a secure message through my dashboard specifically asking for a callback about my medical issue review. I explained I was able to work with reasonable accommodations and included doctor's note confirming this. Got a call back within 3 days, and they approved my claim a week later. Be super specific in your message about being able and available for work despite your condition.

That's really helpful! I haven't tried the secure message option yet. I'll definitely try that approach and include that specific language about being able to work with accommodations.

Yes! It finally got resolved last week. What worked for me was 1) sending a secure message through my dashboard specifically requesting review of the medical flag, 2) uploading a letter from my doctor stating I can work with certain accommodations, and 3) using Claimyr to actually speak with someone who could see my file. Took about 4 weeks total, but at least I got all the back payments once approved.

My niece had this same issue with her depression. she waited 8 weeks and nothing happen, then she just reapplied and didnt mention the medical condition at all on the second application and got approved right away. maybe not the right way to do it but it worked for her

Please be careful with this advice. Withholding relevant information on your application could be considered fraud, which can lead to having to repay benefits with penalties. Always be truthful on your application, but focus on how you're still able and available for work despite any medical conditions.

For what it's worth, I process UC claims (not in PA, but nearby state with similar rules). The key issue with medical conditions is whether they make you unable to work. If your doctor can document that you can work with certain accommodations, that should resolve the issue. Also, make sure you're completing any questionnaires they send about your medical condition. These often get overlooked in the dashboard but are critical for moving your claim forward. Look specifically for something called an "Able and Available" questionnaire.

Thank you for the insider perspective! I'll double check my dashboard for any questionnaires I might have missed. I definitely can work with accommodations, so I'll make sure that's clearly documented.
