PA UC claim flagged for missed work due to medical emergency - two new issues appeared

I'm so devastated right now and dealing with PA unemployment on top of everything else. We lost our baby on Monday and I had emergency surgery. I've been on UC for about 6 weeks (my initial claim was approved with no issues). I've been doing part-time work at a retail store while on UC, reporting all earnings. Because of the medical emergency, I had to miss my Friday shift. When I filed my weekly claim yesterday, I honestly reported that I wasn't able and available for work that day and filled out the fact-finding form explaining the medical situation. Now my UC portal shows TWO new issues on my claim! I can go back to work as of yesterday and completed all my work search activities for the week despite everything. Will calling PA UC help resolve these issues quickly? I'm worried my benefits will be delayed for weeks now. Has anyone dealt with medical emergency issues on their claim? Any advice would be so appreciated - this has been the worst week of my life.

First, I'm so sorry for your loss. Regarding your UC issues - yes, calling will help get this resolved faster. The two issues are probably 1) the not able/available flag and 2) the medical exemption request. The UC reps can review your fact-finding form and potentially clear both issues during the call. Make sure you have your medical documentation ready just in case, though they might not ask for it initially. You should still be eligible for partial benefits for the days you were available to work that week.

Thank you for the kind words and information. I've been trying to call all morning but just getting busy signals. I have a note from my doctor - do you think I should upload that through the portal instead of waiting to speak with someone?

omg im so sorry about ur baby :( i had something similar happen with UC last yr when i had to miss work for a funeral. the not able/available thing triggers automatic flags but usually gets cleared prettyy quick especially if its just for medical reasons. but ya def call them!!!

Thank you for the sympathy. It's helpful to know your situation was resolved quickly. I'll keep trying to call.

PA UC system is THE WORST with these automatic flags!!! I swear they just WANT to make our lives harder when we're already suffering! I had surgery last year and even with doctor's notes it took FIVE WEEKS to get my claim fixed because they kept saying they "needed to review" everything. And good luck getting through on those phone lines - I spent THREE DAYS trying to reach someone!!!

Not everyone has the same experience though. My cousin had a similar medical issue and got it cleared up in just a few days. Depends who you get on the phone I think.

I work with UC claims frequently, and I can confirm that temporary medical situations typically don't disqualify you from benefits, especially when it's just for a few days. The system automatically flags any "not able and available" answers, but once a representative reviews your fact-finding form and sees it was a temporary medical emergency, they should be able to resolve it. However, calling is definitely your best option to speed this up. Otherwise, these issues can remain pending for 2-3 weeks while they process the documentation. I'd recommend trying to call first thing in the morning when they open at 8am. Also, I'm deeply sorry for your loss. This is the last thing you should have to worry about right now.

Thank you for the detailed explanation. That makes me feel a little better about eventually getting this resolved. I'll try calling right at 8am tomorrow.

I was in a similar situation last month and couldn't get through on the phone for days. I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got connected to a UC rep in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2 The rep was able to look at my fact-finding form and clear the issues right away. For a medical emergency like yours, they should be understanding, especially since you're already back available for work. So sorry about your loss - hope you get this resolved quickly.

This happened to me last year, but I filed wrong when I had surgery. I was so confused about the able/available question. I thought since I was on bedrest I should say I wasn't available, and that created issues on my claim. BUT the issues were automatically resolved after about 3 weeks without me doing anything! They just reviewed my paperwork and fixed it. So if you don't wanna deal with calling right now with everything else going on, it might just fix itself. Btw my condolences to you and your family.

THREE WEEKS? That's ridiculous! Nobody should have to wait that long for money they're entitled to! The system is BROKEN!

Just wanted to say - make sure you've got your work search documentation completely up to date. When they review claims with issues, they sometimes check everything, not just the specific issue. My brother had his claim held up for an extra week because his work search activities weren't properly documented.

That's a good point - I did complete all my work searches for this week even with everything going on. I'll double check that they're all properly entered in the system.

Update for anyone following this thread - I just spoke with a PA UC claims examiner about a different issue, and they confirmed that temporary medical situations (especially emergencies) generally don't affect your eligibility as long as you're honest in your reporting. They also mentioned that uploading your medical documentation directly through your dashboard can help speed up the review process. There should be an option to upload documents related to each issue on your claim.

Thank you for checking on this! I found the document upload section and just submitted my doctor's note. I'm still going to try calling tomorrow, but this makes me feel better knowing I've at least got documentation submitted.

Yes! I finally got through yesterday morning after using the Claimyr service someone recommended here. The UC rep reviewed my doctor's note and cleared both issues on the spot. She said I'll still get partial benefits for the week (they'll just deduct the day I wasn't available). Payment should arrive by next Tuesday. Thanks everyone for the help during such a difficult time.

I'm so glad you got this resolved! Your experience really shows how helpful it can be to have medical documentation ready and to try the callback services when the phone lines are jammed. It's reassuring to hear that PA UC can actually handle these situations properly when you get the right person on the line. Hope you're doing better and taking care of yourself during this difficult time.
