PA UC claim after pregnancy job elimination - approval timeline?
Just filed my unemployment claim yesterday after my company eliminated my position - at 6 months pregnant no less! Trying not to panic but bills don't stop coming just because you're expecting. I uploaded the termination letter stating my position was eliminated (no fault of my own). Anyone know how long PA typically takes to approve claims these days? I keep checking the portal but it just says 'pending review' with no other info. This is my first time filing for UC and the anxiety waiting is really getting to me. Does being pregnant affect anything with my claim? I worked there for almost 9 months before they let me go.

Congrats on the baby! Sorry about your job though. I was in a similar spot last year (7 months along when they 'restructured' my department). PA UC typically takes 2-3 weeks to process a straightforward claim. Since you uploaded the termination letter already that should help speed things up. Being pregnant doesn't affect your claim at all - they can't discriminate based on that. Just make sure you're ready to do your weekly certifications as soon as they're available! And if it takes longer than 3 weeks, you might want to try Claimyr to get through to an agent (claimyr.com). They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2 - it helped me reach someone when my claim got stuck.

•Thank you! I'll definitely check out that service if I don't see movement on my claim soon. Do you remember if they backpaid you for the weeks while you were waiting for approval? I'm trying to figure out our budget situation.

•5 weeks?? Oh no, that's terrifying. I really can't wait that long. Did you have to call them or did it just eventually process?

The timing depends on a few factors: 1. Whether your employer contests the claim (doesn't sound like they will) 2. If there are any "open issues" flagged in the system 3. Current claim volume at PA UC (which fluctuates) The most important thing is to keep filing your weekly claims every week, even while the initial claim is pending. If approved, you'll receive all eligible back weeks. Make sure you're completing your work search activities too - you need to do at least two per week and track them in your online account. PA is pretty strict about this requirement. As for pregnancy, it has no bearing on your claim eligibility. Your job separation was due to elimination of position, which is a qualifying reason for benefits regardless of pregnancy status.

The PA UC system is a complete NIGHTMARE right now!! I filed 3 weeks ago and STILL waiting. Every day I check and nothing changes. Called HUNDREDS of times and cannot get through!!! This is ridiculous - we pay into this system and then can't even access it when needed!!! I'm beyond frustrated with how they treat people who are already stressed about losing their jobs. And don't even get me started on the stupid job search requirements - who's going to hire someone who's pregnant?? The whole system is broken!!!!

•While I understand your frustration with the system delays, I want to clarify something important - employers cannot legally refuse to hire someone because they're pregnant. That would be discrimination under federal law. The job search requirement is still valid for pregnant claimants, and you should document all your work search activities to maintain eligibility. As for reaching PA UC, have you tried using the chat function on the website? Sometimes it's easier to get assistance that way than by phone.

my brother had to file last month and got approved in exactly 10 days. i think it depends on what industry your in and if theres any issues with your claim. did u check if theres any open issues on your dashboard? sometimes they need more info but don't tell u

•I don't see any open issues on my dashboard, just says pending. I worked in marketing if that matters? 10 days would be amazing, I'm really hoping it doesn't take much longer than that.

Based on current processing times, you should expect approximately 2-4 weeks for a standard claim without complications. Here are some important points to remember: 1. Ensure you file your weekly certifications on time (Sunday through Friday of each week) 2. Complete and document at least 2 work search activities each week 3. If your claim status changes to "open issue," you'll need to be proactive about resolving it 4. Your pregnancy is irrelevant to your claim eligibility; the position elimination is what qualifies you 5. Benefits are typically backdated to your initial filing date if approved If you notice your status changes to anything other than "pending review" or if it's been more than 3 weeks without update, you should contact them directly. The best times to call are Tuesday-Thursday between 8:15-9:00am.

•Thank you for the detailed response! This is really helpful. I'll keep a close eye on my status and make sure I keep up with the weekly certifications and job search requirements. Hoping it falls on the shorter end of that timeline.

just fyi when i was on UC last year i got a letter saying i needed to verify my identity with ID.me which added like 2 more weeks to the process so be ready for that too

•Oh no, I haven't heard anything about ID.me yet. Is that something I should do proactively or wait until they ask?

•Wait until they request it. Not all claimants are required to verify through ID.me - it's typically only requested if there are identity verification concerns with your claim. Doing it proactively won't speed up your claim if it's not required.

I had a hard time reaching someone when my claim got stuck for weeks. I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got through to PA UC in like 20 minutes when I'd been trying for days on my own. They have this demo video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2 - not cheap but worth it when I was desperate. Might be good to know about with a baby on the way if you need to get answers fast.

•Thanks for the recommendation. I've seen a couple people mention this service now. I'll keep it as an option if things drag on too long.

•I tried Claimyr last time and it STILL took forever to get someone! PA UC is just understaffed and doesn't care about us!!!

To answer your earlier question - yes, they did backpay me for all the waiting weeks once my claim was approved. So at least you'll get that money eventually, though I know that doesn't help with immediate bills. And I forgot to mention - make sure you set up your direct deposit info in the system right away if you haven't already!

•Thank you! That's a relief to hear. I did set up direct deposit right away, so hopefully that's all set. Just playing the waiting game now.

anyone else notice how they always seem to approve right AFTER you call them??? like they see ur number and suddenly approve ur claim lol

•There's actually a logical explanation for this. When you call, the agent typically reviews your claim while you're on the phone. If they see it's ready for processing but just hasn't been reviewed yet, they can often complete that review during your call. It's not that they're withholding approval until you call; it's that your call prompts the review that would have happened eventually.
