PA UC claims issues - what problems are common in 2025? Getting nervous about mine

Just submitted my first ever unemployment claim in PA last week and I'm already getting super anxious. The confirmation page said it could take 2-3 weeks for review, but after reading horror stories online I'm starting to worry. For those who've been through this recently, what kinds of problems should I expect? Are most claims hitting snags or is it just the people with issues who post online? My former employer wasn't happy when I was laid off (budget cuts), so I'm worried they might contest it or something. Just trying to prepare myself mentally for what's ahead with PA UC...

Most common issues I've seen in 2025 are identity verification problems, missing documents, and employers disputing claims. About 70% of first-time claims hit at least one 'open issue' that extends the timeline. Don't panic though - most eventually get resolved. If your employer contests, you'll get a chance to provide your side. Just make sure you're doing your weekly certifications while waiting and documenting your job search activities (need 5 per week). The system will tell you if there's an issue that needs addressing.

Ugh, 70%?! That's not encouraging. The confirmation email didn't say anything about open issues. How would I even know if there's a problem? And can I start filing weekly claims before the initial claim is approved?

Speaking from experience, patience is your best friend with PA UC. My claim last month had an "open issue" for THREE WEEKS with zero explanation. Turned out my employer entered my last day incorrectly. Things that commonly trip people up: 1. Identity verification through ID.me 2. Work search documentation (you need those 5 activities weekly now) 3. Employer disputes about reason for separation 4. Missing quarterly wages 5. Previous overpayments And yes, definitely file your weekly certifications even while waiting for the initial determination! Many people mess this up and lose weeks of benefits.

same same SAME. My claim got stuck because I worked in another state 18 months ago. took foreeeeever to sort out and nobody would tell me what was happening!

The most annoying thing about the PA unemployment system is you could wait weeks just to find out there's a problem, and then weeks more to fix it. When I couldn't get through on the phones for my open issue (kept getting busy signals for DAYS), I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and they got me connected to an actual UC rep in about 20 minutes. They have this demo video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2. Seriously saved me from an eviction notice last month when my benefits were delayed. It's worth it when you're desperate to talk to someone.

does that actually work? ive been trying to call for 2 days straight and cant get through

It definitely worked for me. My claim had been stuck with an "open issue" for nearly 4 weeks and I was getting desperate. With Claimyr I got through to a real person who could actually see what was happening with my claim. Turns out they needed one piece of information I didn't even know they were waiting for.

That's encouraging! Did you have any issues with your employer or was your separation pretty straightforward? I'm worried mine might contest.

The PA UC system is DELIBERATELY DESIGNED to be frustrating and confusing!!! They hope people will give up and not get the benefits they deserve. In 2025 they're still using technology from the stone age. You'll probably get stuck with an "open issue" that no one will explain, and when you call you'll get busy signals until the heat death of the universe. If your employer contests it (which companies ALWAYS do now because it affects their rates), you'll wait MONTHS for a referee hearing while bills pile up. Sorry to be negative but that's the REALITY of the broken system!!

While there are definitely frustrations with the system, this is unnecessarily alarmist. Not all employers contest claims - many don't if the separation was due to legitimate reasons like budget cuts. And while some claims do take months, the average processing time is currently 4-6 weeks for claims with issues. It's important to be prepared for delays, but many claims do process smoothly.

i just got through my first claim last month. here's what helped me most: - call first thing when they open (7:30am i think?) - have all your employer info super organized - upload any docs they ask for same day - don't mess up your weekly certs!!! answer honestly! - keep doing job search (save all your proof) hope that helps a little. i know it's stressful...i was freaking out too

Thank you for these practical tips! I'm going to set an alarm for 7:30am tomorrow and try calling. Quick question - how do you submit proof of job search activities? Is there a specific form or place to upload that?

To answer your question about job search documentation: You don't need to submit your job search activities with each weekly certification anymore, but you DO need to record and keep them for at least 18 months. PA UC can request them at any time for audit. The easiest way is to use the PA CareerLink system to track them, which automatically records your activities. For the 5 required activities per week, things like applying for jobs, attending workshops, working on your resume, and networking all count.

Thanks for clarifying! I didn't realize CareerLink connects with the UC system - that's really helpful. I'll start using that to track everything.

One other bit of advice - if your initial claim gets approved and you start receiving benefits, set aside some money if possible. About 1 in 5 people I know got hit with an overpayment notice months later (sometimes for the entire claim amount). The system sometimes approves claims and then later determines you weren't eligible. If that happens, file an appeal immediately - you only have 15 days from the date on the determination letter.

This happened to my cousin! They said he was overpaid $4400 and had to pay it ALL back even though it was THEIR mistake!!

Thank you all for the information and advice. I'm feeling a bit better prepared now, though still nervous. Going to start my job search activities tomorrow and will definitely keep detailed records. I'll also try calling first thing in the morning to check on my claim status. If that doesn't work, might look into that Claimyr service if things start dragging on too long. Really appreciate everyone sharing your experiences!

Good plan. Just remember that your claim is still pretty new, so there's no need to panic yet. The first 2-3 weeks is normal processing time. Best of luck with everything!
