How can I tell if my PA UC claim was approved or denied? Stuck in limbo for weeks

I filed my initial unemployment claim about 3 weeks ago and I'm totally confused about where things stand. The PA UC website shows my claim as "processed" but I haven't received any determination letter or payments. The dashboard just shows $0.00 benefit amount. I've tried calling the UC service center at least 20 times but can't get through - always busy signals or the automated message saying call volume is too high. Is there a specific status that tells me if I'm approved or denied? Where exactly on the portal should I be looking? This is my first time on unemployment and I'm starting to panic about bills piling up.

Look for a 'Claim Status' or 'Monetary Determination' section on your dashboard. If it shows 'processed' but no payment, you might have an 'open issue' that needs resolving. PA UC doesn't always make these issues visible in the portal, but they'll stop payments until resolved. Also check your correspondence/message center for any determination letters - sometimes they're only posted there without email notification. If your financial determination shows $0, that could mean they couldn't verify your wages or you have an eligibility issue they're investigating.

Thanks for the response. I checked my correspondence section and don't see anything except the initial confirmation that I filed. No determination letter at all. Where exactly would it show if I have an open issue? I don't see anything labeled that way in my dashboard.

Wow 6 weeks?? I can't wait that long! Did you ever find a good time to call when it wasn't constantly busy?

I went through this nightmare in January. The PA UC system is designed to be confusing! Here's what you need to know: 1. "Processed" only means they received your application 2. You need a "Financial Determination" letter that shows your weekly benefit amount 3. Even AFTER that, you could have eligibility issues they're reviewing Check your dashboard for "Issues and Determinations" - that's where problems show up. And the $0.00 is a RED FLAG - means either they couldn't verify your wages OR you have a pending issue. BTW - I spent TWO WEEKS trying to get through on the phone before I found Claimyr (claimyr.com). They connect you directly to UC agents without the wait. Saved me hours of busy signals. They have a demo video here: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2. Worth every penny when you're desperate for answers.

Is that service legit? I heard about it but was nervous about giving my info to a third party...

To directly answer your question: You're NOT officially approved until you receive a Financial Determination letter with a benefit amount greater than $0 AND you have no unresolved eligibility issues. Here's how to check your full status: 1. Log into your PA UC dashboard 2. Click on "Claim Summary" - this shows your weekly benefit amount if determined 3. Click on "View Claim History" - shows payments issued/pending 4. Check "Issues and Determinations" - shows any eligibility questions 5. Review "Correspondence" - all official decisions come here The most common reasons for delays are: - Missing/incomplete employer information - Questions about your separation reason (quit/fired/laid off) - Wage verification issues - Work search requirement questions Unfortunately, many issues aren't visible in the portal. The only way to know for sure is to speak with an agent. I recommend calling right when they open at 8:00 AM (but even that's no guarantee).

Thank you so much for the detailed explanation! I checked and found an "Issues and Determinations" section I didn't notice before. It shows "Separation Information Needed" but doesn't explain what exactly they need. I'm definitely going to try calling at 8 AM tomorrow.

The UC system is GARBAGE by design!!! They WANT you to give up and not collect benefits. I had a "processed" claim for over 8 WEEKS with no explanation. Called 50+ times. My advice? FILE AN APPEAL even if you haven't gotten a denial. The appeal triggers them to actually look at your claim!!!

Filing an appeal without a determination isn't technically possible - you need something to appeal. But contacting your state representative's office can help. They have direct lines to UC staff that can push claims through faster.

Maybe officially it's not an "appeal" but I filled out the appeal form anyway explaining I hadn't received a determination and MAGICALLY my claim got fixed within a week. Just saying what worked for me!

Good idea! Just checked and nothing there unfortunately. I've been checking it regularly though.

Update based on your comments: Since you found "Separation Information Needed" under Issues and Determinations, that's exactly why your claim is on hold. They need more details about how your employment ended (laid off, fired, quit, etc). This won't resolve itself without you providing that information. Two options: 1. Upload the requested information through your dashboard if there's a link to do so 2. Speak with an agent who can take that information over the phone Once you provide what they need, they typically make a determination within 1-2 weeks. Until then, no payments will be issued, but if approved, you'll receive back payments for all eligible weeks.

I've looked everywhere and there's no link to upload anything for the separation issue. I was laid off due to budget cuts and thought I explained that clearly in my initial application. This is so frustrating! I'll definitely try calling again tomorrow morning.

Quick update on my earlier comment - I just remembered that the "Issues and Determinations" section doesn't always show what documents they actually need. Sometimes they send a paper questionnaire to your physical mailing address instead of through the portal. Have you checked your regular mail? They might have sent something there weeks ago with a deadline to respond.

OMG you might be right! I've been checking my email and online portal but not my physical mailbox very often since I get almost everything electronically these days. I'll check today when I get home. Thank you for this tip!

UPDATE: You guys were all so helpful! I checked my mail and found a form they sent 2 weeks ago asking for more details about my layoff. I filled it out and faxed it back today. Also, I managed to get through to someone by calling exactly at 8:00 AM. The rep confirmed they needed that form and said once they receive it, they should make a determination within 5-7 business days. She also verified my wages were sufficient for benefits, so assuming no other issues, I should be approved. Thank you all for your help navigating this confusing system!

Great news! Make sure you continue filing your weekly claims even while waiting for the determination. If approved, you'll only get paid for weeks you properly certified. And once approved, don't forget you need to record your work search activities each week (apply to 2+ jobs and complete 1+ work search activity).

Yes, I've been filing my weekly claims and tracking my job applications. Good to know I'm doing the right things! Will update once I get an official determination.
