Will NY unemployment accept both W2 photo and scan for proof of employment?
I just submitted my docs for NY unemployment proof of employment verification. I took a picture of my W2 with my tablet but then got nervous they wouldn't accept it because maybe the quality wasn't good enough? So I went ahead and made an actual digital scan and submitted that too. Now I'm wondering if sending two versions of the same document will cause problems or confusion with my claim? Has anyone done something similar? Will they just use whichever version is clearer or will this somehow flag my account for review? I'm probably overthinking this but really can't afford any delays right now.

You should be perfectly fine. The NYSDOL is actually quite reasonable about document submissions like this. They just need to verify your employment and income information. I submitted multiple versions of my pay stubs last year (one was partially cut off in the scan so I resubmitted), and they processed everything without issue. They'll simply use the clearer version and disregard the other. The important thing is that you've provided what they asked for.

Same thing happened to me! I actually sent in THREE different versions of my employment letter because I kept thinking the quality wasn't good enough. They never even mentioned it, just processed my claim normally.

I did EXACTLY this two months ago!!! I took pics with my phone then got paranoid and went to the library to make proper scans. Submitted both. They actually approved my claim super fast - like 4 days later! I think they probably appreciated having a clear version. Don't stress about it, you did the right thing!

That's amazing they approved yours so quickly! I've been hearing horror stories about weeks of waiting. Fingers crossed mine goes that smoothly too.

I submitted BOTH a photo AND scan of my 1099 back in January and they STILL flagged my account for review!!! Been stuck in pending for OVER 2 MONTHS with no payments!!! Called literally 50+ times and can NEVER get through to a human!!! System is BROKEN!!!

I'm sorry you're dealing with that. Your situation sounds different - uploading multiple document versions typically doesn't trigger reviews, but there might be other issues with your claim. I recommend trying Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an agent. They help you skip the phone queue and actually reach someone who can help. I was stuck in pending for weeks and after using their service, I got through to someone who fixed my issue in one call. They have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

You're definitely overthinking it. The NYSDOL document verification system is designed to handle multiple submissions. What matters is that at least one of your documents clearly shows the required information. I've worked with many clients who've submitted multiple versions of the same document without any issues. In fact, in 2025, the NYSDOL actually implemented an improved document verification system that can better handle various qualities of uploads. The system automatically selects the clearest version to send to the claims examiner. Just make sure you keep checking your online account for any messages requesting additional information. Sometimes they might ask for clarification if there's a discrepancy between documents (which shouldn't be an issue in your case since they're the same document).

That's good to know about the improved system! I've been checking my account obsessively so I'll definitely see if they need anything else. Thanks for the detailed explanation!

Just wanted to update - my claim was approved! Looks like sending both the photo and scan wasn't an issue at all. Thanks everyone for helping calm my nerves!

Quick question to piggyback on this thread - do they accept digital W2s from tax prep services? I don't have a paper copy of mine anymore...

Yes, NYSDOL accepts digital W2s from tax services like TurboTax, H&R Block, etc. Just make sure all the information is clearly visible and includes your employer's EIN, your SSN, and wage information. A PDF or clear screenshot of the digital W2 is perfectly acceptable.
