Will NY unemployment accept a photo of my W2 or do I need a scan?
Just submitted my unemployment claim last week after getting let go from my marketing job. Today I got an email asking for proof of employment. I panicked a bit and took a quick picture of my W2 with my phone, then uploaded it. After thinking about it more, I started worrying they might reject a phone pic, so I borrowed my roommate's scanner and uploaded a proper scan too. Both look clear but I'm stressing about whether they'll accept either one. Has anyone else submitted photos instead of scans? Do they care about the format as long as all the info is readable? I really don't want my claim delayed over something like this.

They accepted my phone pic of my W2 without any issues. As long as all the info is clear and readable you should be fine! I think they just need to verify your employment and wage info.

•Thanks for letting me know. Did they take long to approve your claim after you sent the pic?

•It took about 9 days from when I sent the pic to when I got approved. Not super fast but not terrible I guess

•9 days?! You got lucky. I'm on week 3 of waiting after sending my docs 😭

After 2 months of trying to reach ny unemployment with no luck, I finally found a service called claimyr.com that helped me get through to an actual human being! They got me a callback from an agent who fixed my issue in minutes. Best decision I made - talking to an agent got my payments unlocked so fast. Check out their process here: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•Is this some kind of scam? How does this even work? Sounds too good to be true honestly

•Not a scam at all! They just have a system that calls repeatedly and holds your place in line. When they get someone from NYSDOL, they connect the call to your phone. I was skeptical too but was desperate after weeks of trying.

•yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? 🙄

•No catch - it just works. After 6 weeks of trying myself and getting nowhere, I was at my wits end. They got me through to someone who fixed my claim right away. My backpay hit my account 3 days later.

•wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? the unemployment phone system makes me want to yeet my phone into the sun

•I felt the same way lol. But yeah, it works. They just have a system that basically does the calling and waiting for you. When an agent picks up, they connect you. Saved me hours of listening to that awful hold music.

You're totally fine! I literally just went through this last month. They accepted my phone pic no problem. Any clear image works as long as they can read the information. The scanner was overkill but better safe than sorry I guess lol

Not to freak you out but mine got rejected because they said the image wasnt clear enough. Ended up having to mail in the actual document which delayed everything by like 3 weeks. Make sure whatever you sent is super clear and shows ALL the information including the employer EIN and your SSN clearly.

•Oh no, that's exactly what I'm afraid of. The scan I sent should be pretty clear though. Can I check the status somewhere to see if they accepted it?

•You can try calling but good luck getting through lol. The website doesn't really tell you if docs are accepted, just shows claim status. If they need something else, they'll email you.

•If you need to call, try claimyr.com - only way I ever got through to a human at ny unemployment.

I work in HR and deal with this stuff all the time. Here's what you need to know: The unemployment office accepts various forms of document submissions including photos and scans. The critical factor is legibility - they need to be able to clearly see: - Your full name - Social Security Number - Employer's name and EIN - Wage information - Tax withholding information If both your photo and scan are clear and show all this information, you're fine. Submitting both actually helps your case as it shows you're being thorough. If you're still worried, the most reliable way to check your claim status or document acceptance is to speak directly with an agent. The phone lines are notoriously jammed, but services like claimyr.com can help you get through to an actual person who can verify everything is in order. I've recommended this to several former employees who had issues. Don't stress - your approach of providing multiple formats was smart, not paranoid!

•Thank you so much for this detailed response! That makes me feel a lot better. I'll give it a few days and then try to check if there's an issue.

•I second this. I'm an accountant and everything they said is spot on. You're good to go.

The NY unemployment system is such a nightmare. Took me 4 months to get my benefits last year and I had to submit my docs THREE times because they kept saying they couldnt read them. Their system is from like 1982 🤬

•Same boat here. The whole system is designed to make you give up. I swear they just randomly reject documents to delay paying benefits.

•OMFG YES. It's like they're stuck in the stone age! I had to fax something last month. Who even has a fax machine in 2023?!

FYI - you should blank out any sensitive info if you haven't already. Your SSN and stuff should be visible to them but I'd never send a complete unredacted W2 electronically to anyone - even the govt. Too many data breaches these days.

•Oh crap I didn't even think about that. I sent the full thing. Think I should be worried?

•It's probably fine since it's going to the actual unemployment office, but just something to be aware of for future reference. Maybe keep an eye on your credit report for a while just to be safe.

•Man I wouldn't sweat it. They already have your SSN in their system anyway. That's how they track your claim.

If you're trying to contact them, good luck! I tried for weeks before giving up and using Claimyr. Got through to an agent in hours instead of weeks. claimyr.com - not affiliated, just a happy customer who finally got my money!

•hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different? does it actually work?

•It actually does! They just keep calling for you and then connect you when they get someone. I was skeptical too but I was desperate after calling for weeks myself.

why is everyone so paranoid about ny unemployment lol. they literally just want to verify you worked where you said you did. send whatever proof you have and chill.

•Nah I've been through it twice. They're bureaucratic but they're not out to get you. People overthink this stuff.

If they didnt immediately email you saying there was a problem, youre probably fine. The system usually auto-rejects right away if theres an issue with the document format.

I submitted a photo that was literally taken while I was sitting in my car and they accepted it. You'll be fine 👍
