Will I get my final NY unemployment payment after BYE date if I already filed a new claim?

So my benefit year ending (BYE) date was 04/15/2025, and I just filed a new claim today since that date passed. The thing is, I already certified for my weekly benefits for this past week (which was technically my last week under the old claim), and I'm supposed to get that payment tomorrow. With the new claim now filed, will the system still process my final payment from the old claim? Or does filing a new claim somehow cancel that last payment? Really worried since I'm counting on that money for rent.

Yes, you should still receive your final payment from the old claim even after filing a new one. The NYSDOL processes these as separate transactions. The payment for the last week of your expired claim will still be released as scheduled, while your new claim will be processed separately. This is standard procedure, so no need to worry about losing that final payment.

Thank you so much!! That's a huge relief. I was stressing all night about this.

Oh that's great to hear someone else went through the same thing recently!

I wouldn't be so sure actually. Sometimes when you file a new claim it puts a temporary hold on EVERYTHING while they verify your new claim. It happened to me and I didn't get my final payment until they approved the new claim which took 3 weeks!!! Have you checked your payment history to see if it shows pending or released?

Oh no, that's not what I wanted to hear! I just checked and it still says "pending" for that last payment. Does that mean it's on hold now?

I work with the unemployment system regularly, and I can tell you that filing a new claim doesn't automatically cancel pending payments from your previous benefit year. However, if your payment status is still showing as "pending" rather than "released" by tomorrow, you might need to contact NYSDOL directly. The system should process these separately, but sometimes there can be technical glitches when claims overlap at the BYE date. I suggest waiting until tomorrow to see if the payment status changes to "released" - if not, you'll need to speak with an agent.

Thank you for the detailed info. If it doesn't change to released by tomorrow afternoon, I'll try calling them. Fingers crossed!

New claims typically take 2-3 weeks to process currently, though it can sometimes be faster. Make sure you complete any additional questionnaires they send promptly, as those can delay the process if left pending.

This happened to me back in January, and I had the WORST time trying to get through to an agent to fix it. My final payment got stuck in pending for 3 weeks because the new claim triggered some kind of review. I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to a real person on the phone after wasting days on hold. They have this video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE. The agent was able to release my final payment once I actually got to talk to someone. Worth checking out if your payment doesn't come through tomorrow and you need to reach someone quickly.

I've never heard of that service before. Did it actually work for getting through to someone? The thought of waiting weeks for that final payment is really stressing me out.

Yes, it absolutely worked for me. I was able to talk to a real agent within 30 minutes instead of spending days trying to get through. The agent I spoke with immediately saw the issue with my overlapping claims and fixed it on the spot. My payment was in my account the next day.

this system is such TRASH!!!! i had the EXACT SAME PROBLEM last month and my payment got stuck for TWO WEEKS while they "reviewed" my new claim. no warning, no explanation, nothing on the website about it. they just hold your money hostage while they take their sweet time reviewing a new claim. RIDICULOUS!!!

Oh that's terrible! Did you eventually get the payment or did you have to do something special to make it happen?

yeah i got it eventually but only after calling like 50 times and finally getting through to someone who actually knew what they were doing. first person i talked to had NO CLUE and told me wrong info!!

Update us tomorrow if you get your payment! I'm curious if it goes through normally. When this happened to me, I wish someone had told me to wait until AFTER my final payment cleared before filing the new claim. That might have avoided the whole problem.

That's actually really good advice about waiting to file the new claim. I wish I had known that too! I'll definitely post an update tomorrow.

One more thing to keep in mind - make sure you check both your old and new claim inboxes for any messages requiring action. Sometimes when you file a new claim right at the BYE date, they might send identity verification requests or additional questionnaires that can hold up both claims if not addressed quickly.

Just checked and there's nothing in either inbox yet. Hopefully that's a good sign!

UPDATE: Great news! My payment did come through today as normal. It was about 4 hours later than usual, but it's in my account now. Thanks everyone for your help and advice. For anyone else in this situation - it seems like it can go either way based on everyone's different experiences. Some get paid normally, others have delays. Fingers crossed for anyone else dealing with this!
