Filing weekly claim after benefit year expiration - ESD question

Super confused about this timing issue! My benefit year officially expired yesterday (Saturday) but this morning I got a notification saying I have a weekly claim to file. I wasn't expecting to be able to file any more claims since my benefit year ended. Can I still file this last weekly claim even though my benefit year just expired? Will ESD actually pay it? I'm worried about accidentally doing something wrong and getting hit with an overpayment later. Anyone dealt with this situation before?

Yes, you absolutely can and should file that final weekly claim! The system is designed to let you claim for the final week of your benefit year even though the notification comes after expiration. That last week was still within your benefit year, so you're entitled to those benefits if you were otherwise eligible (job searching, available for work, etc).

Oh thank you! That's a relief. So even though I'm filing after the expiration date, since it covers the final week before expiration, it should process normally?

This is why the ESD system drives me CRAZY!!! They could just explain this clearly somewhere but instead everyone panics thinking they're doing something wrong. Typical government nonsense! 🤬

To clarify what others have said: The weekly claim you're filing today (Sunday) is for the week that ended yesterday (Saturday), which was the last week of your benefit year. This is normal ESD procedure - you always file for the previous week. The timing can be confusing, but you're essentially claiming for a week that was within your eligible period. Just make sure you report any earnings accurately for that week as usual, and complete your three job search activities if required.

I remember when this happened to me last year and I was too scared to file it. Lost out on almost $800 because I thought it would be fraud or something. Now I'm kicking myself...

If you've been having trouble reaching ESD about this or any other issues, I'd recommend trying Claimyr. I was stuck in a similar situation last month with a question about my final payment and couldn't get through on the regular line. Claimyr got me connected to an actual ESD agent in about 25 minutes instead of spending days trying. They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. Their website is claimyr.com if you want to check it out.

Thanks for the tip! I'm going to try filing the claim first, but if I have any issues I might need this. Does it work well with the ESD specifically? I've been hung up on so many times trying to reach them...

One more important thing to note: If you're planning to file a new claim after your benefit year expires, you'll need to wait until after you file this final weekly claim. The system sometimes has issues if you try to start a new application before completing all weekly claims on your expired claim.

That's really good to know! I was actually planning to reapply right away. Do I need to wait a certain amount of time after filing the last weekly claim before starting a new application?

My husband just went through this exact scenario last month and ESD did pay him for that final week. Just make sure you file it before the deadline (usually Tuesday night I think?). BTW, when he did try to open a new claim, they made him wait because he hadn't worked enough hours since his original claim started. Something about needing 680 hours of work since your last claim began? Just a heads up in case you run into that issue too.

its actually 680 hours in ur base year not since ur last claim but the base year is different for new claims vs the original one so ya it gets super confusing lol

To answer your follow-up question: I'd recommend waiting at least 24 hours after filing your final weekly claim before starting a new application. This gives their system time to process everything properly. As someone else mentioned, you'll need to qualify with enough work hours in your new base year, which is different from your original claim's base year.

Thank you everyone for all this helpful information! I just filed my final weekly claim and it went through normally. I'll wait until Tuesday before trying to start a new claim application. This community is amazing!
