ESD claim calendar year ending 1/4/2025 - Payment question and starting new claim

I'm confused about how ESD handles claims at the calendar year transition. My benefit year is ending on 1/04/2025 (Saturday). Since the week ends exactly on my benefit year end date, will I still get paid for that final week? Or does ESD cut it off early?\n\nAlso, I've worked enough hours at my seasonal job to qualify for a new claim. Can I file the new claim on Sunday (1/5) right after my weekly claim, or do I need to wait until Monday? I don't want to mess anything up and delay payments since rent is due soon.\n\nThanks for any help! The ESD website is super vague about year-end transitions.

Yes, you'll get paid for that final week (12/29-1/4) since the claim week ends on your benefit year end date. ESD pays for the entire week as long as it falls within your benefit year.\n\nAs for filing a new claim, you can absolutely start that process on Sunday 1/5. The system will actually prompt you to file a new claim when you log in to do your weekly claim. Make sure you have all your employer information, quarterly earnings, and work history ready to upload. You might see a gap week in payments while they process the new claim.

Thank you so much! That's a relief. I was worried I'd lose that last week. Do you know if there's usually a delay between when the new claim is approved and when payments start? I've got enough savings to cover about 3 weeks if needed.

Oh no, that sounds terrible! Did you eventually get it resolved? I really can't afford to wait 6 weeks without payment.

I went through this exact situation last year! You'll get paid for the final week, but when you file the new claim, make SURE you input your employment information accurately. I made a tiny mistake on my quarterly earnings and had to deal with verification issues for weeks. Double-check everything before submitting!

If you're having trouble getting through to ESD on the phone, check out Claimyr (claimyr.com). I used it last month when my claim got stuck in pending status for weeks. They got me connected to an actual ESD agent in about 30 minutes when I'd been trying for days without success. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3\n\nTotally worth it when you're dealing with time-sensitive issues like benefit year transitions or adjudication problems. The agent I spoke with was able to fix my issue on the spot.

Thanks for the tip! I'll keep that in mind if I run into problems getting through. Right now I'm just trying to make sure I do everything correctly from the start to avoid issues.

THE SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO CONFUSE PEOPLE!!! I went through 3 benefit years and EVERY SINGLE TIME there was some kind of problem at the transition. One time they said I didn't report wages correctly (I DID), another time they said I didn't do enough job searches (I DID THOSE TOO). They just want to find reasons to deny benefits and make you fight for what you're legally entitled to!!!!!

I understand your frustration but I've found being super detailed helps avoid most issues. Take screenshots of everything you submit and keep a separate job search log outside their system. Helped me a ton when questions came up.

To answer your question about delays: Yes, there's typically a 1-2 week gap when transitioning to a new claim. This happens because:\n\n1. Your new claim needs to be processed and approved\n2. ESD verifies your employment and wages with employers\n3. They calculate your new weekly benefit amount\n\nIf everything goes smoothly and there are no issues requiring adjudication, you should see payments resume within 2-3 weeks. However, if there are any discrepancies or if additional verification is needed, it could take longer.\n\nMake sure your work search activities are properly documented for each week, even during this transition period. That's a common reason claims get held up.

That's super helpful information, thank you! I'll make sure I have at least 3 weeks of expenses covered just to be safe. I've been keeping really detailed records of my job searches with screenshots and emails, so hopefully that part will be smooth.

kinda related question but did anyone have trouble with their job search activities not saving in the esd portal? i swear i entered mine last week but when i logged in again they were gone

This is a known issue with the ESD portal. Always take screenshots of your submitted job search activities after entering them. The system sometimes fails to save them, especially during high-volume periods like Sunday evenings or Monday mornings. I recommend doing your weekly claim mid-week if possible.

That's a really good point I hadn't considered. I work in tourism and it's definitely seasonal, but I don't have any guarantee of being rehired next summer - they just lay us all off in winter when visitor numbers drop. Should I specifically mention that in my claim?

Yes, absolutely mention that! When filing your new claim, there should be a section asking about the reason for separation. Select
