ESD claim expired same day as my final week - will I get paid for last week?

Just discovered something weird with my ESD claim timing and need advice! My benefit year officially ended on January 15, 2025 (yesterday). This morning when I logged into eServices, it still prompted me to file for the week ending January 15, 2025. I went ahead and submitted it since the system allowed me to, but now I'm wondering if I'm wasting my time. Will ESD actually process and pay this final week since technically my benefit year expired on the SAME DAY the week ended? Anyone dealt with this timing issue before? I'm stressed because I really need that final payment to cover bills until my new job starts next month.

Yes, you'll get paid for that final week! The benefit year ending date is inclusive, meaning any week that ends ON that date is still payable. As long as you had benefits remaining in your balance and you qualified in all other ways (job search activities, etc.), you should receive that payment normally. The system wouldn't have allowed you to file for it if you weren't eligible.

Oh thank goodness! That's such a relief - I was panicking because my car payment is due and I'm counting on that final payment. Do you know roughly how long it'll take to process? Will it be on the same schedule as my previous payments?

That's fantastic news! Thanks for sharing your experience. I was so worried they'd use some technicality to deny it. 2 days sounds perfect.

Are you SURE your benefit year ended and not just that you exhausted your benefit amount??? Those are two different things!!! My benefit year had 3 months left but my $ amount ran out early and it was super confusing. Check your monetary determination letter to confirm what exactly ended.

I'm pretty sure it's the benefit year ending, not running out of money. My monetary determination letter from when I first applied says "Benefit Year Ending: 01/15/2025" and I still had about $1,800 remaining in my balance. But now I'm second-guessing myself...

You're right to check this distinction, but based on what OP described, it sounds like their benefit year ended with benefits still remaining. Unfortunately, any remaining balance after the benefit year ends is forfeited - you can't claim it even if you had funds left. OP, you can file a new claim if you're still unemployed, but there would be a new monetary determination based on your work history in the base year.

I'm dealing with something similar right now but mine ended mid-week which is even more confusing lol. Let us know when you get paid!

If you're still having trouble confirming this or have any issues with that final payment, I'd recommend using Claimyr to reach an ESD agent directly. I was in a similar situation last month where I needed clarification about my final payment and spent days trying to get through. With Claimyr (claimyr.com), I got connected to an ESD agent in about 15 minutes who confirmed my payment was processing. They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. Definitely worth it when you need definitive answers about your benefits.

Thanks for the suggestion! If my payment doesn't show up by Friday, I'll definitely check out Claimyr. It would be worth it to get a clear answer rather than stressing all weekend.

The official ESD guidance states that any week ending on or before your benefit year expiration date is potentially payable, provided you meet all other eligibility requirements. Since your week ended exactly on your benefit year end date (January 15th), that week is included in your claim. The system correctly allowed you to file for it. However, if you had attempted to file for the following week (ending January 22nd), the system would have prevented you from doing so without filing a new claim.

Thank you for explaining this so clearly! That makes perfect sense and matches what happened in my eServices account. The system did allow me to file for the week ending on my benefit year end date, but there's no option for filing for the current week now.

ESD is the WORST with these timing issues!!! My claim ended last year and they DENIED my final week even though I filed it properly! It took THREE APPEALS and 2 months to finally get my money. Their system is completely broken and inconsistent. Don't count on that money until it's actually in your account.

Oh no, that's concerning! Was there something specific about your situation that caused problems? I'm wondering if I should be preparing for a fight with them...

While some claimants do experience complications, what you're describing is not the standard experience. There was likely a specific eligibility issue with your final week that triggered the denial - perhaps related to job search requirements or availability for work. The timing itself (filing for the week ending on the benefit year end date) is generally not problematic.

They claimed I didn't do enough job searches that week even though I DID and uploaded everything! Their system just randomly flags people I swear. But OK whatever believe what you want...

Yes! Great news - the payment just hit my account this morning! Same amount as usual. So for anyone with the same question in the future, YES, ESD does pay for the final week even when it ends on the exact same day as your benefit year expiration. Thanks everyone for your help!
