Can I still file weekly claim on 7/28 when my benefits end 7/27?

My benefit year is ending 7/27 and the ESD website shows I'm eligible for 2 more weekly payments. My question is - can I still file a claim on 7/28 for the week ending 7/27? Or does the system cut me off exactly on 7/27? I don't want to miss out on my final payment just because of timing. Anyone dealt with this before? I tried calling ESD but of course can't get through.

Yes, you can absolutely file that final weekly claim after your benefit year end date. The important thing is that the WEEK you're claiming for falls within your benefit year, not the date you submit the claim. So if your benefit year ends 7/27, you can submit a claim on 7/28 or even later (though don't wait too long) for the week ending 7/27. ESD gives you a grace period specifically for this situation.

Thank you so much! That's a huge relief. I was worried I'd lose that final payment because of the timing.

I think ur gonna have problems with the system. Mine cut me off THE DAY my benefits ended and wouldnt let me file the last week. Had to call ESD and wait for 3 weeks to get it fixed!!

Oh great, now I'm worried again. Did you get it resolved eventually? Did you have to do anything special?

The previous two comments are both partially right. The SYSTEM will allow you to file for any week that falls within your benefit year, even if you're filing after your benefit year ends. However, sometimes the online system gets glitchy around benefit year end dates. If you encounter any problems filing online, you have three options: 1. Call the ESD claims center (though good luck getting through) 2. Use the eServices message center to notify them about the issue 3. Use Claimyr to get connected to an ESD agent quickly instead of waiting on hold for hours. I used them when I had this exact issue last month: claimyr.com - they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 But most likely, you'll be fine filing online. The system is designed to allow this - it's a common situation.

Thanks for the detailed explanation! If I run into issues with the online system, I'll definitely check out that Claimyr service rather than spending my whole day on hold. I appreciate you sharing your experience with this.

Yea its the WEEK that matters not when u file. I filed for my last week 5 days after my benefit year ended and got paid no problem. Just make sure u do it within the normal filing window they give u (which is like 1-2 weeks I think).

Just to add my experience - I was in this EXACT situation in April. Benefits ended on a Saturday, filed on Sunday for the previous week, got paid on Tuesday. No issues whatsoever.

That's really reassuring to hear! Sounds like most people don't have issues with this.

The law is clear on this - you're entitled to benefits for any week where you're eligible and meet all requirements, regardless of when you submit the claim. Just to be super safe though, I'd recommend filing that last claim as early as possible on 7/28 just in case there are any system glitches. If you do encounter any issues, don't panic - just document everything, take screenshots, and contact ESD right away. They HAVE to pay you for that week if you're eligible, even if their system has issues. Also, make sure you're caught up on all your job search activities for that final week! That's the most common reason people get denied for their final week.

That's a great point about the job search activities - I'll make sure I have all 3 documented for that final week. And I'll definitely file first thing on 7/28 to be safe. Thanks for the advice!

Just an update for anyone finding this thread in the future: The law (RCW 50.04.030) defines a "week of unemployment" as any week within your benefit year where you meet eligibility requirements. The date you file the claim is irrelevant as long as you file within the allowable timeframe (usually within 1-2 weeks of the week ending date). This is standard procedure at ESD.
