When do you get unemployment payments from NYS Department of Labor - timing question
I just got approved for unemployment benefits after waiting 3 weeks for adjudication to finish. My claim status finally changed to 'approved' yesterday but I'm confused about when I'll actually receive payments. Do the payments start from when I first filed or only after approval? And how long does it take for the money to show up in my account once they process the weekly claim? I've been filing my weekly claims during the adjudication period like they told me to do.

Congratulations on getting approved! Your payments should be retroactive to your benefit year begin date, which is typically the Sunday of the week you first filed. So if you've been filing weekly claims during adjudication, those should all get processed and paid out. Direct deposit usually takes 1-2 business days after NYS Department of Labor processes your weekly claim.

•That's such a relief! I was worried I'd lost those 3 weeks of benefits while waiting for adjudication. Thank you for explaining that.

same thing happened to me but it took like 5 days to get my first payment even with direct deposit setup, not sure why the delay

•The first payment often takes longer because they're processing multiple weeks at once. After that, weekly payments are much faster - usually 1-2 days like the previous poster mentioned.

Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims every week even after you get that first payment! I made the mistake of thinking it was automatic and missed a week, which caused a whole mess with my benefits.

•Good point - I'll make sure to keep doing the weekly claims. Do you have to do them on specific days or can you file anytime during the week?

•You can file your weekly claim starting Sunday at 6 AM through the following Saturday. Most people do it Sunday morning to get it processed early in the week.

if you're having trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor to check on payment status, I found this service called Claimyr that helped me reach an actual agent. they have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. saved me hours of calling and getting hung up on.

•Thanks for the tip! The phone lines are definitely impossible to get through to. I'll check that out if I run into any issues with my payments.

just wanted to say hang in there - the waiting is the worst part but once you start getting payments it's much smoother sailing

I went through this exact same situation last month! The retroactive payments are definitely the best part - you'll get all those weeks you were waiting during adjudication. In my case, I got about 4 weeks of back payments all at once, which was a huge relief. Just be patient with that first deposit, it might take a few extra days because they're processing multiple weeks. After that, the weekly payments come much more regularly. You're through the hardest part now!

•That's exactly what I needed to hear! Getting 4 weeks of back payments sounds amazing after all this waiting. I was starting to worry that the adjudication period meant I'd lose out on those weeks, but it sounds like they really do honor all the weekly claims you filed during that time. Thanks for sharing your experience - it gives me hope that this will all work out!
