What specific tax documents do NY unemployment need for 2020 income verification due by July 15?

I just got a notification saying I need to prove my 2020 income by July 15th. I'm really confused about exactly what documents they need from my taxes. The website says I can submit either tax returns or paystubs, but doesn't specify which pages of the tax return they need. Has anyone gone through this process already? I was thinking of uploading both my tax return AND my paystubs just to be safe, but I'm not sure if that would complicate things. Anyone know what worked for them? The notification seems pretty serious and I don't want my benefits to get messed up.

I went through this last month. I just uploaded the first two pages of my 2020 1040 form showing my income. That worked fine for me. Took about 3 weeks for them to review and approve it.

Thanks! Did you include any of your schedules or just those first two pages?

I also included my Schedule C since I had some freelance income. Better to include too much than not enough!

I only sent in the first page and they asked for more documentation later. Don't make my mistake lol

After trying for weeks to get someone on the phone about this verification stuff, I used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and they got me connected to a live agent within an hour. Talking to the rep directly got my verification approved that day. Best money I've spent to get my benefits flowing again. Check out their explainer video: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Yeah I was skeptical too but I was desperate after trying for like 2 weeks straight. It basically just holds your place in line and calls you when an agent picks up. Saved me from having to listen to that awful hold music for hours.

I used it last week and it worked. Got thru to someone who fixed my claim that had been pending for a month. claimyr.com saved me frfr

For my income verificaton I uploaded ALL OF THE THINGS 😂 - full tax return with all schedules, W2s, and a couple paystubs. They approved mine in about 10 days. I figured more documentation = less chance of them asking for more stuff later.

I'm in the same boat - got the same notice but for June 30 deadline. Does anyone know what happens if you miss the deadline? My tax documents are with my accountant who's on vacation until next week and im getting nervous...

They can suspend your benefits until you provide the docs. Happened to my roomate. Try calling your accountant's office - maybe someone else can send them?

Yo the whole NY unemployment system is such a mess. I submitted my docs THREE times and they still said they didnt get them. Finally had to talk to a supervisor who manually confirmed receiving them. If u can get someone on the phone its way better than just uploading and hoping.

How did you finally get through to someone? I've been calling for days

Try calling right when they open at 8am. Also, some people on here mentioned claimyr.com which apparently gets you through faster but I haven't tried it personally.

IMPORTANT INFO: make sure whatever docs you submit show your TOTAL income for the year. Some people just submit a couple paystubs which dont show annual income. And double check that your SSN is visible on whatever you submit. I work for a tax prep company and see people mess this up all the time.

That's super helpful advice, thank you! I was thinking of just sending a few paystubs but I'll send the whole tax return instead.

Does anyone know if they'll accept digitally signed copies? I only have PDFs of my 2020 taxes, no physical copies anywere.

Yep they take digital copies. That's all I submitted and it was fine.

Here's what worked for me with the NY unemployment income verification: First, SCREENSHOT EVERYTHING. The upload system is buggy and sometimes doesn't save properly. I submitted my first two 1040 pages + Schedule C (self-employed) + all my 1099s. Keep the file size under 5MB per file or it might fail silently. If you're having trouble getting through online, I highly recommend using claimyr.com - they got me connected to an actual human who confirmed my documents were received. Just having that conversation saved me weeks of anxiety wondering if my submission went through. Also, after you submit, check your message inbox on the portal DAILY. Sometimes they send requests for additional info with short deadlines, and the email notifications don't always work. Finally, if your account shows "pending" for more than 3 weeks after submitting docs, definitely call. Something might be stuck in their system.

THIS!!! The silent fails on their website are the worst. I thought I uploaded everything but nothing actually saved. Wasted 2 weeks before I realized 🤬

Did you have to show schedule C even tho you had 1099s? I only have 1099s for my freelance work.

In my case yes, because the Schedule C shows your net profit after expenses, which is what unemployment is actually based on. But call to confirm for your specific situation!

I had to verify income last month and honestly the whole thing is a joke. Submitted everything perfectly and they still put my account on hold for "missing documents" 🙄 Had to call 47 TIMES before getting through to fix it. The system is designed to make you give up.

Seriously try claimyr.com next time. I was in the same situation and they got me connected to a rep in under 45 mins.

Wish I'd known about that a month ago! Bookmarking for next time the system inevitably breaks 😫

YES! scared the crap outta me. The wording is so aggresive for no reason.

they do that on purpose to scare people who might be committing fraud. but yeah its terrifying even when you're doing everything right 💯

Not sure if its different for everyone but they specifically told me they needed: 1040 first two pages, Schedule 1 if you have it, and any W2s or 1099s. Also they said if you worked for multiple employers make sure ALL of them are documented.

FYI the website said July 15 deadline for me too but the letter they mailed said July 1... so I'd submit early just to be safe. Their communication is so inconsistant smh

Oh no, thanks for the heads up! I'm going to try to submit everything by the end of this week just to be safe.

My sister works at the unemployment office (not in NY tho) and says they're mainly looking for proof that you actually worked during the period you claimed. So focus on documents that show employment dates and income amounts clearly.
