the whole system is such BS 🤬 employers get away with so much garbage. "no work right now" is their way of avoiding responsibility for a workplace injury. stick it to them and file for workers comp!
Make sure your husband sees doctors who specifically ACCEPT workers comp cases. Not all do, and it can create huge problems if you see the wrong ones. Ask specifically when making appointments.
Daily reminder that the entire NY unemployment system runs on COBOL - a programming language from the 1960s. They've been "planning" to update it for over a decade but never allocate enough funding. No wonder things break constantly.
Former IT contractor for a state agency here (not NY). Can confirm many unemployment systems nationwide run on ancient tech. The job search forms are often bolted-on newer features that don't integrate well with the core system. It's amazing they work at all tbh.
my brother works in the ny unemployment office (not IT but adjacent) and he says they're well aware of the work search form issues. internal memo went out months ago but fixing it is "not priority" because it doesn't affect their metrics 🙄 classic government efficiency at work
this makes me so mad. meanwhile WE suffer while they ignore known problems! 🤬
hot take: the backpay system is intentionally broken to save the state money. they know most people will give up eventually.
While I agree it seems sus, never attribute to malice what can be explained by incompetence lol
why not both? 🤣
Check your spam folder!!!! My backpay notification was sitting there for 3 months before I found it. They needed additional info and I never saw the email.
Just checked - nothing there unfortunately 😕
have u checked ur spam folder? sometimes the important emails from unemployment go there. happened to me and i missed an important interview 😣
7 weeks is sadly normal these days. It took me 11 weeks last fall. The key is to keep certifying every week so when you do get approved, you'll get all that backpay at once. And yes, from what you described, you should definitely qualify with a family emergency absence.

Call your local department of social services IMMEDIATELY. When I had my C-section last year and wasn't eligible for PFL, they helped me get emergency assistance, SNAP benefits, and pointed me to other resources. Don't wait - these applications can take time to process.

•I'll call them tomorrow, thank you! Do you remember what documents they asked for? Just trying to be prepared.

•Bring ID, proof of pregnancy (letter from doctor), recent pay stubs, bank statements, rent/mortgage info, and utility bills. Basically anything that shows your income and expenses. They'll help determine what you qualify for.

i'll probably get downvoted but have you considered asking family for help? i know its not ideal but sometimes we gotta swallow our pride. my mom moved in with me for 2 months after my c-section and it was a lifesaver both financially and for recovery.

•Unfortunately my parents live out of state and can't leave their jobs. My partner will help but he can't take much time off either. It's just a tough situation all around.
