Was a bit nervous or untrusting at first, but my calls went thru. First time the wait was a bit long but their customer chat line on their page was helpful and put me at ease that I would receive my call. Can't access ny unemployment site for my 1099G form while traveling internationally

I've been traveling outside the US since April last year and now I desperately need to access my 1099G form for filing taxes. Every time I try to log into the NY unemployment portal, I keep getting blocked or redirected to an error page. At first I thought maybe the site was down for maintenance, but after trying several times over the past two weeks, I'm starting to think it might be because I'm accessing from a foreign IP address. Has anyone else experienced this issue while abroad? Are they geo-blocking international access? I've tried using different browsers and clearing my cache but nothing works. My tax deadline is approaching and I really need this document. Any advice on how to get my 1099G while outside the country?

FWIW, I had similar issues with my California unemployment account while traveling. What FINALLY worked was using a residential VPN (not a commercial one) AND clearing all browser data AND using private browsing. Those commercial VPNs are all on government block lists at this point.

What's a residential VPN? I've never heard of that

Residential VPNs use real residential IP addresses instead of data center IPs. They look like normal home internet connections to websites. Way more expensive but govmt sites don't detect them as VPNs.

this is why i always download and save ALL my important tax docs as soon as they come out... never know when u might need them and government websites are always down when you need them most 🙃

Filed for NY unemployment in December but stuck in investigation limbo - can't reach anyone

I've been unemployed since December 3rd 2022. Filed my claim right away but it went into investigation status almost immediately. In the past 4 months I've only managed to talk to an actual person ONE TIME after calling during that 8-11am window I saw mentioned in another post. They just said my case was "pending investigation" and couldn't give me any timeline. I've called the governor's office twice now but just get sent to voicemail every time. Has anyone else been stuck waiting for an investigation to complete? How long did yours take? Any advice on how to actually reach a human being who can help me? Starting to get desperate here since my savings are running out fast.

NY unemployment phone interview coming up - what to expect when I've been working for Uber Eats?

Got a notice for an upcoming phone interview with the Department of Labor. Looks like they might be reviewing if I can get more benefits. They've sent over details about my previous employer, but here's the thing - I've actually been working since my benefits stopped. I'm doing gig work with Uber Eats plus working part-time at my old job (though it's technically under a new company name now). Should I disclose this information during the interview? Will it help or hurt my chances? I already sent in some additional paperwork they requested. Has anyone gone through one of these phone interviews with ny unemployment before? What kind of questions did they ask? Did you need to provide any specific documentation to get approved? Any advice would be super helpful because I'm nervous about saying the wrong thing.

Just went through this last month. They were mostly concerned about why I wasn't at my previous employer anymore. Since you're working for Uber Eats, be ready to explain your weekly hours and earnings. They'll likely reduce your benefits based on what you earn (there's a formula they use). Better to get reduced benefits than commit fraud by not reporting income though!

Fun fact: when they calculate your benefits with gig work, they look at NET income, not gross. So if you make $500 with Uber Eats but spend $150 on gas, your reportable income is $350. Keep ALL receipts related to your gig work - gas, maintenance, portion of phone bill used for the app, etc.

Yep! For self-employment (which is what gig work is), you report net earnings. Talk to the DOL rep about this specifically during your interview.

NY unemployment rep says I need to wait 10 weeks to be priority? Only at week 8!

So frustrated with this whole process. I lost my job in a retail downsizing back in February and applied for unemployment right away. My claim has been pending for 8 weeks now. Every week I certify and get absolutely nothing - not even a determination letter. Today I finally managed to get through to someone on the phone after trying non-stop for days. The lady I spoke with checked my file and just casually told me that I'm not considered "priority" until I hit 10 weeks of waiting! I thought 8 weeks was already ridiculous, but apparently that's not long enough for them to actually help me? My savings are almost gone and my rent is due next week. How can they expect people to survive for 2.5 months with no income while they take their sweet time processing claims? Has anyone else been told they need to wait 10 weeks before they're considered priority? This seems insane to me.

anyone else notice that when u finally do get through to someone, they always act like its your fault somehow? like sorry for being unemployed and needing the benefits i paid into for years??

The whole system is designed to make you give up. Stay strong and keep pushing. I waited 11 weeks total before mine was approved last year. The second you hit that 10 week mark, call EVERY single day and remind them you're now a "priority" case. Be polite but persistent.

What specific tax documents do NY unemployment need for 2020 income verification due by July 15?

I just got a notification saying I need to prove my 2020 income by July 15th. I'm really confused about exactly what documents they need from my taxes. The website says I can submit either tax returns or paystubs, but doesn't specify which pages of the tax return they need. Has anyone gone through this process already? I was thinking of uploading both my tax return AND my paystubs just to be safe, but I'm not sure if that would complicate things. Anyone know what worked for them? The notification seems pretty serious and I don't want my benefits to get messed up.

FYI the website said July 15 deadline for me too but the letter they mailed said July 1... so I'd submit early just to be safe. Their communication is so inconsistant smh

My sister works at the unemployment office (not in NY tho) and says they're mainly looking for proof that you actually worked during the period you claimed. So focus on documents that show employment dates and income amounts clearly.
