Filed for NY unemployment in December but stuck in investigation limbo - can't reach anyone
I've been unemployed since December 3rd 2022. Filed my claim right away but it went into investigation status almost immediately. In the past 4 months I've only managed to talk to an actual person ONE TIME after calling during that 8-11am window I saw mentioned in another post. They just said my case was "pending investigation" and couldn't give me any timeline. I've called the governor's office twice now but just get sent to voicemail every time. Has anyone else been stuck waiting for an investigation to complete? How long did yours take? Any advice on how to actually reach a human being who can help me? Starting to get desperate here since my savings are running out fast.

Took me 3.5 months to get my determination. Had to call literally every day. Sometimes 5-6 times. The trick is to call at exactly 7:59am right before they open. Otherwise the line gets jammed up and youll just get the busy signal.

•Been trying that for weeks 😭 Usually just get an automated message saying they're experiencing high call volume and to try again later...

•This early morning trick hasnt worked for months. They changed their system so it just puts u in a queue no matter when u call.

I tried everything to reach someone and NOTHING worked until I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) - they basically call NY unemployment for you, stay on hold, then connect you when they actually get through to an agent. Best decision I ever made - got my benefits issue resolved in one day after being stuck for weeks! Watch this video to see how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•sounds too good to be true... did it actually work? has anyone else tried this?

•100% worked for me. It's literally just a service that does the calling and holding for you. My claim was stuck for WEEKS and after talking to an agent, they fixed it in 10 minutes. Crazy how one phone call can make all the difference.

•wait hold up - another company promising to solve the unsolvable unemployment system? 🤔 what's the catch here?

•No catch that I found. They call, wait on hold (sometimes HOURS), then call you when they get a human. Saved me literally days of my life on hold. My benefits started coming 3 days after I finally talked to someone.

•I've been burned by so many of these 'miracle solutions' before... what makes this different from all the other scams out there?

StarSailor
•It's not a miracle solution - they don't do anything with your claim. They just get you connected to an actual DOL agent so YOU can handle your own claim. That's what makes it different - they just solve the impossible phone game.

Im in the same boat. Been waiting since October for my determination. NY unemployment is a total disaster right now. I heard they lost a bunch of staff and the ones left are drowning in backlog. Good luck to us all 😩

Have you tried contacting your local state representative? That worked for me. Email them AND call their office. They have staff dedicated to helping with unemployment issues and can sometimes push things along.

•I hadn't thought of that! Do you just look up who your local rep is and email their office?

Connor O'Neill
•Yep! Google "who is my state representative ny" and put in your address. Then go to their website and there's usually a form for constituent services. Make sure to include your claim # and contact info.

•You gotta be persistent. Call AND email. Some are better than others.

Hey everyone dealing with NY unemployment investigations - I work in HR and here's what you need to know: Investigations happen for several reasons: 1. Your employer contested your claim 2. There was a discrepancy in your work history 3. Identity verification issues 4. Earnings reporting problems Here's what actually works to resolve these: First, DOCUMENT EVERYTHING. Every call, every letter, every interaction. Names, dates, what was said. Second, be persistent but strategic. Calling repeatedly often doesn't work because there's no internal system for escalating repeat callers. Instead: - Submit a written request for status update through your online portal - Contact your state assemblyperson AND state senator (they have different contacts at DOL) - If possible, get your former employer's HR to confirm they're not contesting the claim - Use a service like claimyr.com to get connected to an agent (surprisingly effective) Investigations are taking 2-4 months right now due to massive backlogs. Be prepared to appeal if denied, as many initial denials get overturned. Stay strong, everyone. The system is broken but persistence pays off.

•Thank you SO much for this detailed info! I'm going to try contacting my state rep tomorrow. Any other tips for when I actually get someone on the phone?

•When you get someone on the phone, be super specific about dates and what's happened so far. Ask them to note in your file that you called. And ALWAYS get their employee ID or name. Makes a huge difference for follow-up calls.

Bruh the whole NY unemployment system is trash fr. I had to wait 6 months for my investigation to finish and when they finally approved me, they only gave me 3 weeks of backpay instead of the full amount! 🤬

Investigations are taking forever because theyre understaffed and overwhelmed. My friend works there and says they have 100s of cases per investigator. Best advice - keep certifying every week, even while waiting. If approved, you'll get backpay for all certified weeks.

CosmicCommander
•THIS!!! So many people stop certifying while waiting and then lose out on weeks of benefits!

•I've been certifying every single week without fail. Good to know I'm doing something right at least.

Try messaging them on Twitter @NYSLabor - sounds crazy but they sometimes respond there when nothing else works

anybody else notice these "investigations" started happening way more after all those fraud cases last year? feels like they're treating everyone like criminals now just because some people scammed the system 🙄

Isabella Ferreira
•Yup. I read they lost like $11 billion to fraud during the pandemic so now they're being super strict with everyone.

Check if you have any old emails from unemployment. Sometimes they send requests for additional info and if you miss it, your claim just sits there in limbo forever.

Don't give up! My investigation took 5 months but I finally got approved and got all my backpay (about $14,000). It was worth the wait even though it was hell. Just keep certifying every week!
