Started new NY unemployment claim, had to do video ID verification - how long until payment?

Filed a fresh unemployment claim about 3 weeks ago, certified for my waiting week and then the following week. Got radio silence from the system so I finally managed to get through on the phone yesterday. The agent told me I needed to verify my identity first. What a nightmare that turned out to be! Had to do a video call with some verification agent and the whole process took almost 5 hours with all the waiting and technical issues. The verification person said it could take up to 14 days to process. My account still shows no updates and I'm getting worried about bills. Has anyone gone through this ID verification process recently? How long did it actually take before your claim started moving or you got your first payment?

Aiden Rodríguez

I had to do the same video verification thing back in August. Took about 9 days for my account to update and then another 3 days for the money to hit my account. The waiting is the worst part when you've got bills due. Just keep checking your account daily and certifying on time.

Thanks for the info! 9 days isn't as bad as 14 I guess. Did your account show any status changes beforehand or did the payment just suddenly appear?

The payment pending notice showed up first, then the money hit my account a few days later. The website is always super slow to update tho

9 days is prety good. Mine took almost the full 14 days and I was panicking the whole time 😫

After dealing with the same nightmare calling over and over, I finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected with an actual human at unemployment. Talking to a real agent got my benefits moving, and the video verification moved faster after I had a legit case number. Best money I've spent to get my benefits flowing again. They have this youtube video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Does this thing actually work? Sounds too good to be true with how impossible it is to reach ny unemployment

Yeah it actually does! I was skeptical too but I was desperate after 3 weeks of calling. It basically waits on hold for you and calls when an agent picks up. Saved me hours of listening to that awful hold music

another day another magical solution to the unemployment system 🙄 sure jan

Listen I get being suspicious, but it seriously worked for me. The system is broken and this is just a tool to navigate it. went to claimyr.com, they called for me, and finally got my claim moving

wait does this actually work? I've been trying to get through for 2 weeks and I'm losing my mind

It worked for me! Saved me from smashing my phone after being on hold for hours every day. They just automate the hold process and then call you when there's a real person

Took me EXACTLY 12 days after the video verification for my payments to start coming through. That was in July tho, so it might be different now depending on how backed up they are. The video call was awkward af too, the agent made me turn my head like I was taking a mugshot lol

I've done this twice now (had an identity theft issue). First time took 10 days, second time took 6 days. But I know people who waited 3+ weeks. I think it depends on how busy they are and if there are any flags on your account. NY unemployment system is a total crapshoot these days.

Ugh that's what I'm afraid of. Did you call them again after a certain amount of time or just wait?

I waited the first time and regretted it. Second time I called after 5 days and they found an issue they needed to fix. Def recommend calling if u can get through.

Heres the OFFICIAL answer from someone who works in the system (me lol). The ID verification queue is currently running 8-15 days depending on complexity. If your documents were all clear and matched their records, expect the shorter timeframe. If there were any discrepancies or technical issues during your call, it could take the full 14 days or even require additional verification. The system is NOT equipt to handle the current volume which is why its so slow.

Is there anything we can do to make it go faster? My landlord doesn't care about DOL timeframes 😡

Unfortunately not really. Calling repeatedly doesnt help and can actually slow things down. Make sure you keep certifying each week though, even if you haven't been approved yet.

so like...do you guys just sit around drinking coffee while we all starve or what? 🤡

Trust me, the staff is drowning in cases. The systems are from the stone age and management won't upgrade them. We're processing 3x the normal volume with the same staff and equipment.

Listen up. Former DOL employee here. The ID verification process is completely overwhelmed right now because of all the fraud happening. Here's what you need to know: 1. The 14 days is a maximum guideline, not a guarantee. Many claims are processed faster. 2. Keep certifying EVERY WEEK even if your status isn't updated yet. 3. If it's been more than 14 days, you need to call. Despite what everyone says, calling IS the way to get things moving. 4. The best way to actually reach someone is using claimyr.com - it's a service that calls and waits on hold for you. When an agent is available, it connects you. Better than spending hours on hold yourself. 5. The online system rarely shows real-time updates. Your claim could be approved and payment initiated before the website shows any change. 6. Have a clear list of dates and actions you've taken when you speak with an agent. This helps them trace your claim faster. I've helped hundreds of people navigate this system. The key is persistence and documentation. Good luck!

Thank you for this detailed info! I'm on day 8 now and getting anxious. I'll check out that calling service if it hits day 14 with no movement.

This is actually super helpful unlike most of the generic advice. Would you recommend calling before the 14 days are up or just waiting?

I'd wait until day 10-11. Calling too early just clogs the system. But definitely don't wait past 14 days.

Mine took 11 days but the video verification people were RUDE AF. like excuse me for needing to pay my bills after my company laid off 200 people with no warnng 🙄

DONT WAIT THE FULL 14 DAYS! I did the id verification and waited patiently. After 14 days NOTHING happened and when I called they said there was a 'note' on my account that needed to be cleared by a supervisor. Wasted 2 more weeks. Call after 7-10 days if nothign updates.

this is exactly what happened to me too! they didn't even tell me there was an issue until I called

I used claimyr.com after trying to call myself for days. They got me through to an agent who actually helped. It cost money but saved me weeks of waiting.

my roommate just went through this exact thing and it took exactly 12 days for her account to update. she never even got an email or anything, she just logged in one day and suddenly it said payment pending. NY unemployment is a joke

You know what's ridiculous? The fact that they require this heavy verification but then don't communicate ANYTHING about where you are in the process. Like just a simple status bar would help so much with anxiety.

-

Natalie Adams

THIS!! The complete lack of communication is what drives me insane about ny unemployment. Just let me know what's happening!

Exactly! Other states have actual status trackers for claims. NY is living in 1995

I did the video verification a month ago. It took exactly 8 days before my account updated. But here's the important part - you need to keep certifying every week! Even tho it seems like nothing is happening, those weeks will get paid retroactively once you're approved.

i went thru this back in Aprll. took about 10 days then all of a sudden all my back pay hit my account at once. nearly had a heart attack seeing all that $$$ lol. hang in there, the system works eventually

-

Maya Patel

That's encouraging! I'm on day 8 now so hopefully I'm getting close. Did your online account update before the payment or did the money just appear?

the account updated like 2 days before the $ hit my bank. it'll say payment pending first

Why is everyone trusting this broken system to magically start working? CALL THEM! And not just the regular number, you need to actually get through to a tier 2 agent. I waited 3 weeks after my ID verification and nothing happened until I called and found out there was another issue they never told me about. Don't wait!

-

Sophia Russo

How do you even get a tier 2 agent? I can barely get anyone on the phone

You have to specifically ask to be transferred to a claims specialist when you finally reach someone. The frontline people can't actually fix much.

Try using claimyr.com - that's what finally worked for me. Got me connected to an actual agent who could help. Worth every penny to get my benefits flowing.

took 9 days for my account to update after the video call then another 3 days for money to hit my bank. they told me 14 days too but it was faster. video call lady was nice but the whole process was weird af, felt like i was applying for a top secret clearance not just tryin to get my unemployment lol

The whole ID verification thing is because of the MASSIVE amount of fraud happening with unemployment. My neighbor works for DOL and says they're catching hundreds of fake claims daily. It sucks for legit people like us but at least they're trying to protect the system. Mine took 13 days to process back in February.

Good to know there's actually a reason for the ridiculous process. Still frustrating when you're waiting for $$$ tho

0 coins

-

Yeah frustrating for sure. But blame the scammers, not DOL. They're just trying to make sure real people get their benefits.
