How long after NY unemployment ID verification by video call until payment?

I filed a new NY unemployment claim in March 2025, claimed my waiting week and this week, but haven't heard anything back. After calling NYSDOL, they told me I needed to verify my identity. The whole process took over 4 hours because I had to do a video call with an agent (which was super frustrating). The agent said it could take up to 14 days to process. Has anyone else gone through this ID verification process? How long did it actually take before you saw an update on your DOL account or got your first payment? Getting worried since bills are coming up soon...

I had to do that ID verification thing back in January. It took exactly 11 days before I saw my account update to 'approved' status, then the payment hit my account 2 days after that. The video call was awful - I waited for 2 hours before an agent connected. Just hang tight, they're usually pretty good about sticking to that 14-day timeline.

Thanks for sharing your experience! Did your account show any kind of pending status during those 11 days, or was it just blank? Mine still shows nothing and I'm getting paranoid that something went wrong during the verification.

The system isn't broken - it's actually functioning EXACTLY as designed. They deliberately make these verification processes difficult and time-consuming to discourage people from claiming benefits they're entitled to. It's all about metrics and saving money. I've been through this rodeo 3 times now.

I went through this exact situation in February. The 14 days is honestly their worst-case scenario estimate. Mine was processed in 6 business days, and I received payment on day 8. One thing that helped me: I was having trouble reaching anyone by phone to check on status, so I tried Claimyr (claimyr.com). They got me connected to an actual NYSDOL agent in about 20 minutes when I'd been trying for days on my own. The agent was able to confirm my verification was approved but just hadn't updated in the system yet. You can see how it works in their video demo: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Never heard of that service before. Did they actually get you through to a real person? I've been trying the phone lines for days and either get disconnected or told to call back later.

Yes, got me through to an actual NYSDOL agent who could see my file. Definitely worth it when you're anxious about waiting and can't get through on your own. The agent told me my verification was already approved but the system just hadn't updated yet, which saved me a lot of stress.

I'm going through the same thing right now! Did my video verification last Wednesday and still nothing. The agent kept asking me to turn my ID different ways and the lighting in my apartment is terrible so it took forever. I'm so stressed about this. What happens if they reject the verification? Do we have to start all over again?

If they reject the verification (which is pretty rare), they'll contact you with specific instructions about what additional documentation you need to provide. Usually it's just submitting additional forms or scheduling another video call. Don't stress too much - the vast majority of legitimate claims get verified without issues. It just takes time to process.

The current average processing time for ID verification via video call is 7-10 business days. Here's what you should know: 1. Continue claiming weekly benefits during this waiting period 2. Check both your email and physical mail daily for communication 3. If your verification is approved, you'll receive all eligible back payments at once 4. The online portal often lags behind actual processing status If you reach day 12 with no updates, I'd recommend contacting them again. The verification process is frustrating but necessary to protect the integrity of the unemployment system. Most legitimate claims are processed within the timeframe they provided.

Thank you for all this information! I'll keep certifying each week. Is there a specific department I should ask for when calling about ID verification status? The regular helpline wasn't very helpful last time.

Ask specifically for the "Identity Verification Unit" or "ID Verification Status Update." The general helpline representatives often have limited access to the verification system. Also, calling earlier in the morning (right when they open) tends to result in shorter wait times and more experienced representatives.

I had to do this back in January and my experience was TERRIBLE. The video verification was scheduled then canceled TWICE without notice. I ended up waiting 23 days - well beyond their "14 day" promise. When I finally got someone on the phone, they claimed my verification had been approved a week earlier but "hadn't been entered into the system correctly." Sure. Magically fixed it while I was on the phone. ALWAYS follow up before their deadline - don't just trust the process!

That's really concerning... I'll definitely follow up if I don't see any changes by the end of next week. Did you have to call multiple times to finally get someone helpful?

When I did my video verification last year, it actually went pretty fast. Got approved in 4 days. But I think I just got lucky with timing honestly. I remember the agent said something about how they were catching up on a backlog. Anyway, I'd just keep checking the website every morning, that's when they usually update the system. By the way, my brother is applying for benefits now too. Does anyone know if he needs to do the video verification or is it only for certain people?

The ID verification requirement is triggered by several factors in the system. Most common reasons are: - First-time claimants - Address discrepancies in your application - Name variations in federal records - Suspicious IP access or login patterns - Random selection for enhanced verification It's not required for everyone, but approximately 30-40% of new claimants are currently being selected for this additional verification step.
