NY unemployment claim on hold for ID verification - been 3 weeks with no update!

I submitted my NY unemployment claim back on January 8, 2025 and it's been stuck on 'pending ID verification' for almost 3 weeks now! I uploaded all the documents they asked for through their ID.me system - driver's license (front and back), birth certificate, and a utility bill. The ID.me part seemed to go through fine but my claim is still showing as pending in the system. I've called the NYSDOL number literally 40+ times and can't get through to anyone. The automated system just tells me my claim is pending and then hangs up! I'm getting really desperate here as I've got rent due next week and was counting on these benefits. Has anyone else had their claim stuck in ID verification purgatory? How long did it take to resolve and what did you do to get it moving? I'm worried I made some mistake that's holding things up but have no way to find out what it is.

This is actually pretty common with NY unemployment right now. There's a huge backlog in the ID verification department and many claims are taking 3-4 weeks to process. The system is designed to prevent fraud, but unfortunately it's causing delays for legitimate claims too. Make sure you've completed BOTH the ID.me verification AND uploaded documents directly to your NYSDOL dashboard - sometimes people miss that second step. You should receive an email once your verification is complete, but you can also check your message inbox on the NYSDOL portal daily for updates. If it goes beyond 4 weeks, you'll need to speak with an agent directly.

Wait, there's a second step? I did the ID.me part but didn't realize I needed to upload documents directly to NYSDOL too! Where exactly on the dashboard do I do that? I don't see any option for document upload when I log in.

same thing happnd to me last month, took almost a month to get approved. system is broken!!!

A whole month?? That's crazy! Did they at least backpay you for all those weeks once it was approved?

I see the confusion. Once you complete ID.me, you should receive a secure DocuSign email from NYSDOL within 48 hours requesting additional documentation. Check your spam/junk folders - many people miss this email. If you didn't receive it, that might be why your claim is stuck. To directly address this: Look for the "Document Upload" section on your NYSDOL dashboard menu. If you don't see it, you might need to click on "View My To-Do List" first. There should be a pending task for document verification if that's what's holding up your claim.

I just checked and there's no DocuSign email anywhere in my inbox or spam folder. And I don't see any "Document Upload" section or anything in my to-do list about verification documents. The only thing in my account is a message saying "Your claim is pending verification. This process may take 2-3 weeks." from January 9th. Should I try to re-do the ID.me verification?

THE ENTIRE NYSDOL SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO MAKE YOU GIVE UP!!! They WANT you to get frustrated and stop pursuing your rightful benefits. I went through the EXACT same thing in November and literally couldn't get ANY updates for 5 WEEKS!!! The only thing that finally worked was getting through to an actual human being who could override the system hold. But getting through is nearly IMPOSSIBLE with their garbage phone system that disconnects you after 2 hours of waiting!!!

5 weeks?! I can't wait that long! How did you finally get through to someone? I've been trying the main number endlessly and just get disconnected.

After trying to reach NYSDOL for weeks with no success, I used Claimyr to get through to an agent. It saved me so much frustration - basically it holds your place in line and calls you when an agent is available. The video on their site explains it better than I can: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE In my case, there was a simple flag on my account that was causing the verification delay, and the agent removed it in minutes. My claim was approved the next day. Definitely worth checking out if you're stuck in limbo like this.

Just to add another perspective - I had this same issue in December and it turned out there was a name mismatch between my ID.me account and my NYSDOL application. My ID had my middle initial but my application didn't. Seems minor but it caused a 3-week delay! You might want to check if there are any discrepancies like that. And yeah, the only way I found out was by talking to an agent directly.

That's really helpful, thank you! I do use my middle name on some documents but not others, so maybe that's the issue. I'm going to try to reach an agent and check.

my cousin works at nysdol and says theyre so understaffed right now. id verification backlog is like 12000 claims. they prioritize ppl who call in tho so keep trying

That's good to know they prioritize people who call in. I'll definitely keep trying the phone number.

I had this problem back in January. After trying to call for two weeks straight, I finally tried calling at exactly 7:30am when they open instead of during normal hours. Got through in only 20 minutes! The agent told me my verification was actually complete but there was a system glitch preventing it from updating my status. She fixed it while I was on the phone and my payment was released the next day. Also, make sure you're still doing your weekly certifications even while your claim is pending - they'll backpay you once approved, but only if you've been certifying each week!

Thank you for the tip about calling right when they open! I'll try that tomorrow morning. And yes, I've been doing my weekly certifications religiously, even though the system says I'm not eligible for payment yet. Fingers crossed I can get this resolved soon.

Just wanted to follow up - were you able to get this resolved? I'm curious if calling early worked or if you tried another method.

Yes! I actually tried the Claimyr service that someone mentioned above, and it worked perfectly. Got connected to an agent in about 45 minutes. Turns out there was a mismatch between my address on my driver's license (which was my old apartment) and the address I entered on my application. The agent was able to override it since I'd uploaded a current utility bill too. My claim was approved the next day and I received backpay for all three weeks! Such a relief - NYSDOL really needs to improve their communication about these issues.
