No document request letter from NY unemployment - still need to submit docs?

I've been receiving NY unemployment for about a month now based on W2 income, but I never got any email or mail requesting me to submit documents. Some of my friends who are also on regular UI said they received letters asking for additional documentation. Am I supposed to be submitting something even if I didn't get notified? I'm worried they'll cut off my benefits or make me pay everything back if I missed something important. Has anyone else NOT received a document request but still had to submit something? I don't want to mess this up.

ya you still need to submit them even if you didnt get the letter. my cousin never got anything in the mail but his account had a message in it saying he needed to upload proof. check your online account messages!!! they might have sent it there instead of mail

Oh shoot, I never thought to check there! I always just go straight to the certification page. I'll log in and look right now. Thanks!

I work with unemployment claims regularly. To clarify: not everyone needs to submit additional documentation. This typically depends on: 1. Whether the NYSDOL already has your wage information from your employer 2. If there are any discrepancies in your claim information 3. If you're receiving certain types of benefits If you're on regular UI with straightforward W2 employment, and your employer properly reported your wages, you may not need to submit anything additional. However, it's always best to check your online account dashboard and message center. The notification could be there even if you didn't receive physical mail.

Thanks for the detailed explanation. I just checked my account and found a message from last week requesting W2 forms and my last 2 pay stubs. The deadline is in 3 days! So glad I asked about this.

I had THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM last month! Never got any email or mail but they STILL expected me to send in docs. Then they froze my benefits for "failure to respond" even tho they never contacted me!!! The system is TOTALLY BROKEN. Took me 2 weeks of calling CONSTANTLY to fix it.

That's exactly what I'm afraid of! How did you finally get through to them? I've tried calling before and it's impossible.

I had this exact issue in January. Found out I missed a document deadline because the notification was buried in my online account. After days of trying to reach someone at NYSDOL with no success, I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an agent directly. They have a service that connects you to unemployment directly without the wait. Watched their demo at https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE and decided to try it. Got through to an agent who helped me submit my documents after the deadline without penalty. Saved me from having to repay benefits.

Yes, it actually works. I was skeptical too but was desperate after trying for days. Got connected to an agent in about 20 minutes when I had been trying on my own for a week with no luck.

Shouldn't we be concerned that the unemployment system isn't sending proper notifications? I mean what if someone doesn't think to check online and misses the deadline? Seems like a huge design flaw that unfairly punishes people who are already struggling...

Question for those who know: what exactly happens if you miss the document deadline? Do they automatically make you pay back everything, or is there an appeal process? Asking for... well, myself actually. I think I might have missed my deadline by a couple days because I never saw the notification until now.

If you missed a deadline, upload your documents immediately anyway and include a brief explanation for the delay. Then call to speak with an agent. While technically they can require repayment or stop benefits for missed deadlines, agents often have discretion for reasonable delays, especially when notification issues are involved. Document everything and be persistent.

btw they changed the website layout in february which is why some ppl are missing notifications. the old site used to pop up messages when u logged in but now they go to that stupid inbox thing that nobody checks

UPDATE: I uploaded all my documents and called using the Claimyr service that someone mentioned. Actually got through to a real person (shocking!) who confirmed my documents were received and said I made it before the deadline. They also noted in my account that I never received the mail notification. Thanks everyone for your help - you literally saved me from a potential disaster with my benefits.
