NY unemployment website keeps kicking me out when filing new claim - tried 3 times
I'm trying to file a new unemployment claim on the NY website today and facing a weird issue. Every single time I get about halfway through the application, the system just boots me out completely. I've tried 3 separate times this morning and keep hitting the same wall. The page just refreshes and sends me back to the beginning. Is anyone else experiencing this problem right now? Any tips on how to get through the application without it crashing? This is seriously frustrating.

•Glad I'm not alone but sorry you're dealing with this too. Did you try clearing your browser cache? I'm going to try that next.

This is a known issue with the NY unemployment system that happens when their servers are overloaded, especially on Mondays and Tuesdays. A few things that might help: 1. Try filing very early in the morning (5-6am) or late at night (after 10pm) when traffic is lower 2. Make sure you're not using browser extensions that might interfere 3. Use Chrome or Edge browsers - the site doesn't work well with Firefox 4. Clear your cookies and cache before starting 5. Don't use the back button - ever If you keep getting kicked out at the same exact spot, it might be something specific in your application triggering a validation error. Write down all your answers before starting so you can quickly get back to where you were.

•Thank you! I've been trying around noon which must be peak time. I'll definitely try late tonight instead. I've been using Safari so maybe that's part of the problem too.

I had this exact problem for a WEEK in February!!! It's not just you. The NY unemployment system is GARBAGE. I would get to the part where they ask about why you left your job and then BOOM - kicked back to start. I was about to throw my laptop out the window!!!!

After dealing with this same issue last month, I discovered that if you try to file a claim too soon after creating your NY.gov ID account, this happens consistently. Their systems need about 24 hours to fully sync your account information. Also, if you're entering employment history that doesn't match their tax records, it'll kick you out without explanation. Another common reason: if you've filed in another state previously or have wages in multiple states, their cross-verification system can time out.

•That could be it! I did just create my NY.gov ID yesterday. Maybe I should wait until tomorrow to try again? I did work in both NY and NJ over the past 18 months so that might be causing issues too.

The system has been super unstable since they did that update in January. Have you tried using a different browser? Sometimes the website works better on Chrome than on Safari or Firefox. Also make sure you're not using any VPN because that can trigger their security features.

•This is good advice. I'll add that if you're using any kind of autofill or password manager, try disabling those too. The NYSDOL website has bizarre compatibility issues with those tools sometimes.

I had the same problem and spent days trying to figure it out. You know what finally worked for me? Using Claimyr to get through to an actual person at the unemployment office who could help me file over the phone. Check out https://claimyr.com - they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE I was skeptical at first but after trying for almost a week to file online I was desperate. The agent I got connected with fixed whatever was causing the error in my application and completed it with me over the phone in like 20 minutes.

Update: I tried again at 11pm last night using Chrome instead of Safari and it worked! Got all the way through the application. For anyone else having this problem, definitely try during off-hours and use Chrome. Thanks everyone for the suggestions!

•Great news! Glad you got it working. Make sure you set a reminder to certify for benefits weekly once your claim is approved - always on Sunday or Monday for the previous week.

random question but did anyone elses claim take forever to process? i finally got mine submitted but its been pending for 3 weeks now....starting to worry

•That's actually pretty normal for 2025. Initial claims are taking 2-4 weeks to process right now due to their new fraud detection system. As long as you see "pending" and not "denied," you're still in line. When approved, you'll get all backpay from when you first applied.

I've been struggling with this exact same issue for the past two days! It's so frustrating because you spend all that time filling out the forms and then get kicked back to square one. I tried switching from Firefox to Chrome like some people suggested and it did seem to help a little - I got further in the process before getting booted. Also found that having multiple tabs open seemed to make it worse, so now I close everything else before starting the application. Still haven't successfully completed it though. Going to try the late night approach tonight and see if that works better when the servers aren't as busy.

•I feel your pain! The multiple tabs thing is so true - I noticed that too when I was having issues. One thing that helped me was actually writing down all my answers on paper first so I could speed through the form when I finally got a stable session. Also, if you're still having trouble tonight, try using incognito/private browsing mode - sometimes cached data can cause weird conflicts with their system. Hope you get through it soon!

This thread has been so helpful! I was dealing with the exact same problem yesterday and was about to give up. Based on everyone's advice, I tried again this morning at 6am using Chrome with all extensions disabled and cleared cache first. It worked perfectly! The key seems to be timing + browser choice + clean session. For anyone still struggling: definitely avoid peak hours (9am-5pm), use Chrome or Edge, and make sure you have all your employment history written down beforehand so you can fill it out quickly. The NY system is definitely buggy but these workarounds really do help. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences!

•This is such great advice! I'm dealing with this same issue right now and was getting so frustrated. I've been trying during lunch breaks which is probably the worst time. Going to try the early morning approach tomorrow with Chrome and see if that does the trick. It's reassuring to know that so many people have gotten through it eventually - I was starting to think there was something wrong with my specific application. Thanks for sharing what worked for you!

Just wanted to jump in here as someone who's been through this nightmare multiple times! The NY unemployment system is honestly one of the worst designed websites I've ever encountered. A few additional tips that saved my sanity: 1. Take screenshots of each page as you go - if it crashes you can at least see exactly where you left off 2. If you're getting kicked out at the employment history section specifically, try entering just your most recent job first and see if that gets you through. You can always call to add additional employers later 3. The "session timeout" on their site is ridiculously short (like 15 minutes) so have everything ready to go before you start I also noticed that if you have any special characters in your name or address (apostrophes, hyphens, etc.) it can cause issues. Try entering everything without special punctuation if you keep hitting walls. The fact that we all have to become IT troubleshooters just to access basic government services is absolutely ridiculous, but at least we can help each other get through it! Good luck everyone!

•These are all excellent tips! The screenshot idea is brilliant - I wish I had thought of that when I was going through this mess last week. The special characters thing is really interesting too, I never would have considered that could be causing issues. It's absolutely ridiculous that we need a whole troubleshooting manual just to file for unemployment benefits that we're entitled to. The NY system really needs a complete overhaul. Thanks for sharing all these detailed workarounds - I'm sure they'll help a lot of people who are stuck in the same frustrating loop!

I'm having the exact same problem! Been trying to file my claim for the past 3 days and keep getting booted out around the same spot where it asks about job separation details. Reading through all these comments has been super helpful though - I had no idea the timing mattered so much or that Safari could be causing issues. I've been trying during my lunch break every day (probably the worst time based on what everyone's saying here). Going to try tonight around 11pm using Chrome with everything cleared like others suggested. It's honestly crazy that we need to become tech experts just to file for unemployment, but I'm grateful for this community sharing all these workarounds. Fingers crossed the late night approach works! Will report back if I'm successful.

•Good luck tonight! That's exactly the same spot where it was kicking me out too - the job separation section seems to be a real trouble spot for their system. The late night strategy definitely works based on what I've seen in this thread. Make sure you have all your employment dates and reason for leaving written down beforehand so you can fill it out quickly. Also, if it does boot you out again, don't get discouraged - it took some people here multiple attempts even with all the right conditions. Hope you get through it successfully and can update us with good news!

This is such a relief to find this thread! I've been banging my head against the wall for the past two days trying to get my unemployment claim submitted. Same exact issue - gets about halfway through and then just dumps me back to the beginning with no explanation whatsoever. I've been trying during regular business hours on Safari, so based on everyone's advice here I'm clearly doing everything wrong! Going to wait until after 10pm tonight and switch to Chrome. Also going to write down all my employment info first so I can speed through it if I get a good session. The fact that this is such a widespread problem and there's no official guidance from NYSDOL about it is pretty infuriating. Thank goodness for communities like this where we can actually help each other figure out the workarounds. Will definitely update if the nighttime Chrome approach works for me!

•You're definitely not alone in this frustration! I went through the exact same thing last month and it nearly drove me crazy. The Safari + business hours combo is basically guaranteed to fail based on what I learned here. One thing I'd add to the great advice already given - make sure you're not using any browser extensions or ad blockers when you try tonight, as those can sometimes interfere with the NY site's weird scripting. Also, if you have a VPN running, turn that off too. I found that having a completely "clean" browser session made a huge difference. The after 10pm window really does work - their servers are so much more stable when fewer people are hammering them. Good luck tonight and definitely let us know how it goes!
