NY unemployment tourism worker checks finally coming in the mail today!
Just wanted to give everyone a heads up - if you qualified for that tourism worker relief payment, you should be receiving it this week! I got an email notification back in December that I was eligible, and today my check finally came! It was in a pretty plain looking envelope with no obvious markings - just had my name on it as "TO THE ORDER OF:" so be on the lookout when checking your mail. Almost missed it thinking it was junk mail. Been waiting on this for months so figured I'd let others know to keep an eye out!

Yep! Got mine yesterday too! $2875 actually helped me catch up on some bills. Was starting to think it was never gonna come lol. For those who don't know - if you worked in tourism/hospitality and lost your job during the shutdown period, they sent out eligibility emails a couple months back.

Wait what?? I worked at a hotel downtown and never heard about this. Did they just automatically send emails to people who were on unemployment?

Yeah they sent emails to ppl who had filed for unemployment with certain employer codes. Some ppl had to verify with additional docs. I think you had to respond to the original email by January 15th tho 😕

After trying to get through to NY unemployment for WEEKS about why I wasn't receiving my tourism relief payment, I finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com). They kept calling for me and got me connected to an actual agent who fixed my address issue so my check could be sent out. Best money I ever spent to get someone on the phone! Just got my check today too. Check out this video if you want to see how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

This sounds like an ad. Does this actually work? I've been trying to reach someone about my missing payment for ages.

Not an ad lol, just grateful. Been trying to get through for literally 3 weeks. They just keep calling until they get through and then connect you with the agent. My check wasn't coming because they had my old address.

yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? 🙄

The catch is you pay them to do the calling for you instead of sitting on hold for 4 hours. Worth every penny when you're trying to get thousands in benefits released. Just sharing what worked for me.

It worked for me - they just keep auto-dialing until they get through then call you when there's an actual person. Saved me hours of hold music torture.

STILL haven't gotten mine! 😡 Anyone else still waiting? I qualified and replied to the email back in December. This is so typical of ny unemployment to mess this up.

Same here. Called the help line and they said "it's being processed" whatever TF that means. Been "processing" for 2 months now!

I just got mine today and I was one of the last people who applied. Maybe check if they have your correct address?

I believe this is for people who worked specifically in tourism and entertainment sectors that were hit hard during shutdown. The eligibility was pretty specific - you needed to have worked in certain job classifications and lost work during specific months. Some people qualified for up to $3500 depending on how long you were out of work.

Is there a way to check if you were eligible? I worked at a restaurant but never got an email about this. Wonder if it went to spam or something.

You can try calling the tourism relief hotline at 888-209-8124. Have your NY unemployment info ready. But good luck getting through - took me 9 tries.

I had the same issue. Spent forever trying to reach someone. Finally used claimyr.com and got through in like an hour. They told me I was eligible but my email was wrong in the system.

For anyone having issues with getting their payment, missing eligibility emails, or address problems, here's what worked for me: First, check your spam folder for any emails from NYSDOL with subject lines about tourism worker assistance or relief payments. They sent these out in November/December. Second, if you can't find anything, you need to talk to an actual representative. This is where most people get stuck because the phone lines are IMPOSSIBLE. After trying for days, I used claimyr.com which kept calling for me and got me connected to an agent. They explained that: - Some eligible workers were missed in the first email batch - Many had outdated contact info in the system - Some checks were returned due to address issues - You may need to verify your employment history from that period The agent was able to verify my eligibility on the spot and update my address so my check could be sent out. I received it about 10 days later. Don't give up if you think you qualify! The tourism assistance is separate from regular unemployment benefits, and there's still money available for eligible workers. Hope this helps someone!

This is super helpful, thank you! Was finally able to get through to an agent thanks to your advice and turns out I was eligible all along! They're sending my check now.

Not a hack, just sharing what worked for me after weeks of frustration. If you don't want to try it that's fine, just wanted to help others who are stuck like I was.

Anyone else's check amount seem off? I expected more based on the months I was out of work...

Mine was exactly $2550 which is what they said in the email. Might depend on how many weeks you were unemployed during the eligibility period.

Hmm I was out for the entire period and only got $2300. Guess I need to call and figure out why. Great, another fun day on hold 😩

Try claimyr.com - it's what I used after spending days trying to get someone on the phone. They got me connected to an agent who fixed my claim amount.

Do we have to pay taxes on these payments? Anyone know?

Geoff Richards
Yes, they're taxable. Says it in the fine print of the letter that came with mine. No withholding taken out so set some aside for tax time.

PSA: Don't throw away the envelope! My roommate almost tossed it thinking it was junk mail. These are NOT coming in official state envelopes - they're plain white and look like regular business mail.

Stupid question maybe but does anyone know if this affects regular unemployment benefits? Like do we have to report this as income for our weekly certifications?

Nasira Ibanez
No, it's considered pandemic relief, not income for unemployment purposes. Won't affect your weekly benefit amount.

The whole ny unemployment system is such a disaster. Why did they send these with no marking on the envelope? So many people will throw these away thinking it's junk mail. And why did it take 3+ months from when they sent the eligibility emails? So many people have moved or changed addresses by now.

They probably did it for security reasons. Better than having "MONEY ENCLOSED" on the envelope lol. But yeah the system is a joke.

True but they could at least put some kind of official marking. My check almost became confetti in my shredder 😂

Just called to check on mine (somehow got through after 45min) and they said its being mailed next week. The person said they're sending them out in batches based on the last digits of your SSN. Last digits 00-33 went out last week, 34-66 this week, and 67-99 next week.

Honestly just pure luck. Called right when they opened at 8am. Tried claimyr.com for my husband's claim though and that worked way better.

how long do these checks take to clear? deposited mine yesterday and my bank is saying 5-7 business days which seems excessive for a government check

Ally Tailer
Mine cleared in 2 days with Chase. Might depend on your bank's policies for govt checks.

Wait so are these checks related to regular unemployment or is this some new program? I'm confused
0 coins
Finley Garrett
It's a separate program specifically for tourism, hospitality and entertainment workers who lost jobs during the shutdown. They used unemployment records to identify eligible people but it's a one-time payment, not weekly benefits.
