NY unemployment sent me a new benefit rate letter after applying for MEUC - didn't reapply for UI, what's happening?
My regular unemployment benefits expired about two weeks ago. Last week, I decided to apply for the Mixed Earner Unemployment Compensation (MEUC) program since I had some self-employment income alongside my regular job. I didn't reapply for standard unemployment at all - just submitted the MEUC application through the portal. Yesterday, I was surprised to receive a letter in the mail showing a new weekly benefit amount that's different from what I was getting before. The letter has a calculation based on my previous quarters and shows a new rate of $384 per week, which is about $45 more than I was getting previously. I'm really confused because I never submitted a new UI application - just the MEUC form. Has anyone experienced this? Does this mean my benefits are somehow continuing? The letter doesn't specifically mention MEUC anywhere, it just looks like a standard UI monetary determination letter. I'm not sure if I should start certifying again or what this actually means.

The same thing happend to me! I got a new monetary determination after applying for something else entirely. When I tried to certify the next week, it actually let me and I got paid. The system is so glitchy that sometimes it just renews your claim automatically. I'd say try certifying this Sunday and see what happens.

Really? So you think I should just try certifying this weekend? I'm worried about getting hit with an overpayment later if this is some kind of error...

If the system lets you certify and pay u, thats on them not you. They sent you an official monetary determination letter which means SOMETHING was processed. Just screenshot everything for your records just in case.

be careful with this advice, you could still be responsible for overpayments even if its their mistake. the ny unemployment system loves to make you pay back $$ years later 🙄

true but if they sent an official determination letter and their system allows certification, thats pretty solid ground to stand on. just saying what worked for me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

After struggling to get answers for WEEKS, I finally found a service called Claimyr that actually got me through to a real person at unemployment. I explained my weird situation with a similar letter and they fixed it right there on the call. Talking to an agent got my payments flowing again within days! Best decision I made in this whole mess: claimyr.com - check out how it works here: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Is this some kind of scam service? How does it even work? Sounds too good to be true with how impossible it is to reach anyone there.

Not a scam at all! They basically call on your behalf and stay on hold, then when an agent picks up, they connect the call to your phone. Saved me from hours of listening to that horrible hold music. They got me through in about 45 mins when I had been trying for days on my own.

100% worked for me. My claim had been stuck for almost a month, then I talked to an agent and it was fixed the next day. Check out their site claimyr.com - they explain everything there.

Hey I get the skepticism! I was desperate after trying for weeks. All they do is wait on hold for you - nothing magical about it, just saves you the time and frustration. My claim is now fixed so I'm just sharing what worked 🤷♀️

this is probably an extension that kicked in automatically. when did your original benefits end exactly? theres sometimes a week or two gap between regular UI ending and extensions starting. the system is completlely borked and nobody knows whats going on half the time LOL

The MEUC is just additional money on top of UI benefits. You can't get MEUC by itself - you need to be on some type of unemployment program first. So either you were automatically put on an extension (if eligible) or there's an error in the system. My bet is on extension.

That makes so much more sense! I thought MEUC was a separate thing I could get after UI ran out. So this letter might actually be telling me I'm on an extension program?

Yep! That's probably exactly whats happening. MEUC is an add-on for people who had both w2 and self employment income. So if your getting this letter, your likely on PEUC or EB extension now (depending on your situation) and eligible for the MEUC add-on too.

CALL THEM!!!! Seriously, you need to speak to a human being who can look at your specific claim. Nobody here knows exactly whats happening with your account. The NY unemployment system is soooo messed up right now that you cant rely on letters or the website to tell you whats actually going on.

lol good luck with that. I've called 97 times this week and never got through 🤡

I've been trying to call but it's impossible. Either busy signal or it hangs up after the automated message saying they're experiencing high call volume.

Here's what's likely happening (I used to work in UI admin before COVID): When you applied for MEUC, the system probably flagged your account for review since MEUC requires you to be on an active UI claim. During that review, the system may have determined you're eligible for an extension and automatically processed it. The letter you received is most likely a monetary determination for a PEUC extension - not for MEUC itself. MEUC would be a separate additional payment on top of your weekly benefit amount. For these situations, I recommend three things: 1) Try certifying this Sunday to see if your claim is active 2) Check your online account for any messages about an extension 3) Try to speak with an agent to confirm what's happening For #3, the regular phone lines are nearly impossible, but I've had clients use claimyr.com with good results - they wait on hold for you and connect you when an agent answers. Don't assume anything with unemployment these days - getting official confirmation is the safest approach.

Thank you for such a detailed explanation! This makes a lot of sense. I'll try certifying this weekend and see what happens. If that doesn't work, I'll look into that calling service.

This is the correct answer. I'm a tax accountant who's helped dozens of clients with UI issues during the pandemic and this explanation is spot on.

just sayin the NY unemployment system is TRASH. they send random letters that contradict each other and expect us to figure it out. meanwhile ppl cant pay rent. the whole thing needs to be THROWN AWAY and rebuilt from scratch!!! 🤬

Quick update on my similar situation - I was in almost the exact same boat last month. Got a determination letter after my benefits ended even though I didn't reapply. I tried certifying and it let me, but then the payment was held "pending review." I finally got through to someone (used claimyr.com after wasting days trying to call myself), and they told me it was an extension that triggered automatically but got flagged because something didn't match up in my work search records. The agent fixed it on the spot. Worth talking to someone directly.

Did the letter mention anything about a "base period" or "alternative base period"? Trying to figure out if this is a new initial claim or an extension.

Ruby Garcia
Yes, it does mention base period! It shows quarterly earnings from last year and has a calculation based on that. So that means it's a new claim?

possibly. but sometimes extension letters look identical to initial claim letters. the NY system is held together with duct tape and prayers at this point lol. if your benefit year ending date is different than before, it's definitely a new claim.

dont do ANYTHING until u talk to someone! my friend got a similar letter, started certifying, got paid for 8 weeks then got hit with a 11k overpayment notice because it was an error. NY unemployment is a mess rn 😫

I specifically remember reading that MEUC applications sometimes trigger automatic review of your whole claim status. My guess is during that review they realized you qualified for an extension and processed it automatically. Pretty lucky if that's what happened!

This happened to my roommate and it turned out she was eligible for Extended Benefits she didn't know about. The MEUC application triggered a review of her account and they automatically enrolled her. She's been getting payments for 6 weeks now.

That would be amazing if that's what happened! Did she have to call to confirm, or did she just start certifying again?

She just started certifying again and it worked! But she did eventually get through to someone on the phone who confirmed everything was correct.

The ny unemployment website has a new chatbot that actually helped me with a similar question. Have you tried using that? It's not perfect but sometimes it can give you basic answers without having to call.

that chatbot is useless for anything complicated. it just spits out generic answers 🙄 only thing that worked for me was finally talking to a human

If your letter shows a new BENEFIT YEAR END date, then you've been approved for a new claim period. Check that date carefully - it should be about a year from now if it's a new claim, or the same as your previous benefit year end date if it's just an extension.

Just checked and the benefit year end date is April 2024, which is about a year from now. My previous one ended in March 2023, so I guess this really is a new claim? But I never applied for one...

Definitely sounds like a new benefit year then. The system sometimes automatically processes these if you had sufficient wages in your new base period. I'd call to confirm, but this is probably good news for you!
