PEUC extension after regular DEO benefits ran out - need paperwork & timeline info

I just exhausted my regular Florida unemployment benefits last week and I'm hearing about PEUC extensions. Does anyone know if I need to submit a whole new application for the PEUC extension? The CONNECT system isn't giving me clear instructions. Do I need to upload additional documents or just keep claiming weeks? Also, how long did it take for payments to start after your regular benefits ended? I'm worried about a gap in payments since I still haven't found work and my rent is due in 2 weeks.

Isn't PEUC that covid thing from 2020? I don't think that's a thing anymore dude

Oh no, really?? The CONNECT site mentioned some kind of extension but maybe I misunderstood. Does that mean once regular benefits are exhausted, that's it??

The previous commenter is correct - PEUC (Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation) was a temporary program during COVID that ended in 2021. What you're probably eligible for is Extended Benefits (EB) or Reemployment Assistance (RA) extension, depending on your specific situation and current Florida unemployment rates. For 2025, you don't submit a new application for extensions. The system should automatically evaluate your eligibility when your regular benefits exhaust. You should continue claiming weeks as normal. Your CONNECT dashboard should show a notification about your extension status within 1-2 weeks after exhaustion. If you don't see any updates after 7-10 days, you should contact DEO directly to check on your status.

Thank you so much for clearing that up! I'll keep claiming weeks and watch for notifications. If I don't see anything in a week, I'll try calling DEO. Do you know how long extension payments typically take to start once approved?

3 weeks is a long time with no income... I'm already stressing about rent. Thanks for the advice about continuing to claim weeks!

I've been through this nightmare recently. The CONNECT system is GARBAGE at communicating what's happening with extensions. I waited 4 weeks with NOTHING - no payments, no updates, nothing! Every time I called DEO it was busy signals or getting hung up on after waiting 2+ hours. I FINALLY got through using Claimyr (claimyr.com) - they connected me to an actual DEO agent in about 20 minutes. Turns out there was a "system flag" on my account that was preventing the extension from processing, and the agent fixed it right away. My payments started 2 days later including backpay for the missed weeks. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/UzW_hbUy-ss?si=zORd51jeq1GX5Ldj Saved me from being completely screwed by the system. Worth every penny instead of stressing for weeks.

Thank you for this tip! I'll keep it as a backup plan if I can't get through to DEO directly. It's really concerning how difficult they make it to reach someone when our financial stability is on the line.

One more important thing - make absolutely sure you're completing your 5 required work search activities each week while waiting for the extension to process. If you miss reporting these during the transition period, it could cause further delays or even disqualification from the extension program.

I've been keeping up with my work searches religiously! I actually have 7 interviews lined up next week, so fingers crossed something comes through. But it's good to know that missing those could impact the extension. Thanks again for all your help!

my cousin didn't get any extension after his regular benefits ended in January. DEO told him Florida's unemployment rate was too low to trigger extended benefits. it depends on state unemployment numbers i think?

This is partially correct. Florida's Extended Benefits (EB) program does depend on the state unemployment rate, which must be above a certain threshold to trigger availability. However, there are other extension programs that may be available depending on individual circumstances. The best approach is to continue claiming weeks and monitor your CONNECT account. If you're eligible for any extension, it should be processed automatically. The system should notify you of eligibility or ineligibility within 1-2 weeks after exhausting regular benefits. If you need immediate assistance while waiting, I recommend contacting your local CareerSource office. They can often provide information about other assistance programs and job opportunities in your area.

I think everyone here is missing something important. When your regular benefits exhaust, you SHOULD see a link in CONNECT that says "Apply for PEUC" or something similar for whatever the current extension program is called. If you don't see that link within 24-48 hours after your benefits exhaust, there's likely an issue with your account. At least that's how it worked for me back in November. The system is supposed to automatically determine eligibility, but sometimes you need to initiate the extension yourself through that link.

The interface has changed since November. As of the January 2025 update to CONNECT, extension eligibility is now completely automated, and there's no longer a separate application link. All claimants need to do is continue claiming weeks as normal, and the system evaluates extension eligibility in the background. The manual application option was removed to streamline the process and reduce errors.

Based on my experience working with unemployment claims, here's what you should expect: 1. Continue claiming weeks exactly as you have been 2. The system takes 7-14 days to process extension eligibility after regular benefits exhaust 3. You will receive a determination notice in your CONNECT inbox once a decision is made 4. If approved, payments typically begin 1-2 weeks after approval 5. The first payment will include any eligible weeks that occurred during the processing period If you don't see any updates in your CONNECT account after 10 days, I strongly recommend contacting DEO directly. The mainline (1-800-204-2418) is often overwhelmed, but calling right when they open at 7:30am gives you the best chance of getting through. And as others have mentioned, absolutely continue completing and reporting your 5 work search activities each week during this transition period.

Thank you for breaking this down so clearly! I'll follow these steps exactly. I'll try calling at 7:30am if I don't see updates in my account by next week. Really appreciate everyone's help here - it's been so stressful trying to figure this out on my own.
