What is PEUC unemployment Washington ESD - confused about benefit types
I keep seeing references to PEUC when I'm researching unemployment benefits but I'm really confused about what this means. I filed my regular Washington ESD claim last month and I'm wondering if PEUC is something I should be applying for separately? My weekly claims are going through fine but I want to make sure I'm not missing out on additional benefits. Can someone explain what PEUC unemployment is and if it's still available through Washington ESD? I've been unemployed for about 6 weeks now and just want to understand all my options.

PEUC stands for Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation but that program ended in September 2021. It was a federal program that extended regular unemployment benefits during COVID but it's no longer available. If you filed recently, you're just on regular Washington ESD unemployment insurance (UI). Don't worry, you're not missing anything - those pandemic programs are all done.

•Oh thank goodness! I was worried I was leaving money on the table. So I just need to keep filing my weekly claims with Washington ESD?

NeonNova
•Exactly! Just keep filing your weekly claims and meeting the job search requirements. That's all you need to do for regular UI benefits.

yeah all those pandemic programs are gone now - PEUC, PUA, the extra $600 and $300 weekly payments, all of it ended in 2021. Regular Washington ESD unemployment is all that's left and honestly it's way less confusing now

•That actually makes me feel better. The system seems complicated enough without extra programs to worry about.

Since you're new to the system, make sure you understand the current requirements. You need to make 3 job search contacts per week and log them in your WorkSourceWA account. Also keep track of any work you do while claiming benefits - even one day of work needs to be reported on your weekly claim.

•I've been doing the job searches but I haven't logged into WorkSourceWA yet. Is that separate from my regular Washington ESD account?

Carmen Diaz
•Yes, WorkSourceWA is a separate system but you use the same login credentials. You'll need to create a job search log there and update it weekly with your 3 contacts.

•I had so much trouble figuring out that WorkSourceWA connection when I first started. The Washington ESD website could definitely explain that better.

If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD with questions about your claim, I found this service called Claimyr that actually gets you through to a real person. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. I was spending hours on hold and getting nowhere.

•How does that work? Do they charge a lot for it?

Emily Jackson
•They don't ask for any personal info upfront and it's way cheaper than losing days to being on hold. The video explains it better than I can.

•I've heard of that but never tried it. Does it actually work or is it just another scam?

•It's legit - I was skeptical too but I got through to Washington ESD in like 20 minutes when I'd been trying for weeks on my own.

Wait I'm confused - I thought there were extended benefits available if you exhaust your regular 26 weeks? Is that different from PEUC?

•You're thinking of Extended Benefits (EB) which is a different program. EB only kicks in when unemployment rates are really high in Washington state. It's not available right now.

•So if I use up my 26 weeks of regular UI, that's it? No extensions at all?

Carmen Diaz
•Currently yes, just the 26 weeks unless Extended Benefits gets triggered by high unemployment rates. PEUC was the pandemic extension that gave extra weeks but that ended in 2021.

This is exactly why the whole system is so confusing! They had all these acronyms during the pandemic - PEUC, PUA, FPUC, EB - and now people don't know what's still available and what's not.

•True but at least it's simpler now. Just regular Washington ESD unemployment and that's it.

•I miss those extra $300 payments though lol

For anyone else confused about this stuff, the Washington ESD website has a page that explains all the old pandemic programs and confirms they're no longer available. Saved me a lot of research time.

•Good to know! I'll check that out. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything important.

I was on PEUC back in 2021 when it was still a thing. It was basically an extension of regular unemployment but funded by federal money instead of state money. You didn't have to apply separately - Washington ESD automatically moved you to PEUC when your regular benefits ran out. But yeah, it's been gone for years now.

Ethan Wilson
•That makes sense. So it was just extra weeks of the same benefit amount?

Aiden Rodríguez
•Exactly. Same weekly amount, just federally funded instead of through Washington state. Plus we had the extra $300 on top during certain periods.

•Those were the days! My unemployment was actually more than my regular paycheck with all the extra money.

Just focus on your regular claim and don't worry about all the old pandemic stuff. The important thing is making sure you file your weekly claims on time and meet the work search requirements. That's really all there is to it now.

•Thanks, that's reassuring. I was overthinking it I guess.

If your claim gets stuck in adjudication or you have issues, definitely try that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. I spent 3 weeks trying to get through to Washington ESD about an adjudication issue and Claimyr got me connected the same day I used them.

•Good to know there's a backup option if I run into problems. Hopefully my claim stays straightforward.

•What kind of adjudication issue did you have? I'm worried mine might go into adjudication.

•They needed to verify my work history with my previous employer. It took forever to resolve but once I got through to an actual person it was fixed quickly.

The pandemic really messed up people's understanding of unemployment benefits. I work in HR and I still get employees asking about PUA and PEUC when they get laid off. It's been 3+ years since those programs ended!

•To be fair, the government did a terrible job explaining when these programs were ending and what would happen after.

•Very true. The communication was awful throughout the whole pandemic period.

Bottom line - if you're filing for unemployment in 2025, you're getting regular Washington ESD unemployment insurance. 26 weeks maximum (unless Extended Benefits gets triggered), current maximum weekly benefit is around $999, and you need to do 3 job searches per week. That's it.

Ethan Wilson
•Perfect summary, thank you! That's exactly what I needed to know.

Chloe Boulanger
•Wait, the max is $999 now? I thought it was lower than that.

•They adjust it annually based on average wages. It goes up a little bit each year.

One thing to remember is that all those pandemic programs were temporary federal programs. Regular state unemployment insurance has been around forever and that's what we're back to. Much simpler system overall.

•Simpler but also less generous unfortunately. Those extra payments really helped during the worst of the pandemic.

If anyone else is confused about current Washington ESD policies, I'd recommend just calling them directly or using that Claimyr service to get accurate info. There's a lot of outdated information online from the pandemic era that doesn't apply anymore.

•Good advice. I'll stick to the official Washington ESD website and this forum for current info.

•Yeah, some of those unemployment websites are still showing 2021 information which is totally useless now.

Thanks everyone for clearing this up! I feel much better about my unemployment situation now. Just going to focus on filing my weekly claims and doing my job searches. No need to worry about PEUC or any other programs that don't exist anymore.

Just wanted to add my experience as someone who went through the transition from pandemic programs to regular UI. I was on PEUC in 2021 and when it ended, I had to file a new regular Washington ESD claim. The process was actually pretty straightforward - just had to go through the normal application process like anyone else. The confusing part was that my PEUC claim just... stopped, and I had to figure out on my own that I needed to file a new regular claim. Washington ESD could have communicated that transition better, but once I got the new claim going it was much simpler than dealing with all the pandemic program complications.

•That transition period sounds really confusing! I'm glad I'm starting fresh now without having to deal with switching between different programs. Did you have any gap in benefits when your PEUC ended and you had to file the new regular claim?
