Is there federal unemployment benefits in Washington state?
I've been hearing people talk about federal unemployment programs and I'm confused. I filed my regular unemployment claim through Washington ESD a few weeks ago and it's still pending adjudication. Are there separate federal unemployment benefits I should be applying for? Or is Washington ESD handling everything? I don't want to miss out on money I'm entitled to but I also don't want to file duplicate claims and cause problems with my current application.

Washington ESD administers all unemployment benefits in the state, including any federal extensions when they're available. Right now there aren't any special federal programs running - just regular state UI benefits. Your pending claim should cover everything you're eligible for.

•Thanks, that's reassuring. So I don't need to apply anywhere else besides Washington ESD?

•Correct, just wait for your adjudication to complete. Washington ESD handles it all.

You might be thinking of the pandemic programs like PUA and PEUC but those ended in 2021. Now it's back to regular state unemployment through Washington ESD only.

•Yeah that might be what I was hearing about. Good to know those are over.

If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD about your pending claim, I used this service called Claimyr that got me through to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ and the website is claimyr.com. Really helped me get answers about my adjudication status.

•How does that work? Do they actually get you connected to Washington ESD?

•Yeah they handle the calling and waiting on hold, then connect you when an agent picks up. Saved me hours of trying to get through myself.

•The phone lines are definitely overwhelmed. Early morning calls around 8am sometimes work better.

During COVID there were federal programs but now it's just regular Washington state unemployment insurance (UI). No separate federal applications needed. Everything goes through the regular Washington ESD system.

•What about if you're self-employed? Is that still through Washington ESD?

•Self-employed people can sometimes qualify for regular UI now if they've been paying into the system. Still all through Washington ESD though.

I was confused about this too when I first filed. There's no separate federal system to apply to - Washington ESD handles everything including any federal funding that might be available for extended benefits during high unemployment periods.

•That makes sense. So I just need to be patient with my current claim then?

•Exactly. Keep filing your weekly claims while waiting for adjudication to complete.

The federal government funds part of regular unemployment but you don't apply directly to them. States like Washington handle all the applications and payments.

To be completely clear - there are no current federal unemployment programs you can apply for directly. Washington ESD administers all unemployment benefits in the state, whether they're funded by state or federal money. Your one application covers everything you're eligible for.

I remember during the pandemic there were like 4 different programs - PUA, PEUC, regular UI, etc. But yeah those special federal ones are all done now.

Just to add - if there ever are federal extensions or special programs in the future, Washington ESD will automatically determine if you qualify. You won't need to file separate applications.

Been through this confusion myself. The key thing is Washington ESD is your one-stop shop for all unemployment benefits in the state, regardless of funding source.
