NY unemployment payment delayed this week only - previous weeks came through fine

My girlfriend claimed her NY unemployment benefits on Sunday like she always does, but it's now Thursday and nothing has shown up in her account. The weird thing is she got her payments for the previous two weeks with no problems (came through Tuesday both times). We're getting worried because rent is due next week. Has anyone else had their payment delayed just for this week? Is the system backed up or something?

Glad to know it's not just us. Has this ever happened to you before? Did you call them about it?

There's been a payment processing delay this week according to the NYSDOL Twitter account. They posted that payments claimed on Sunday are taking 1-2 days longer than usual due to system maintenance. Most should be processed by Friday. If nothing arrives by Monday, then I'd recommend calling.

Thanks for the info! We don't follow their Twitter so had no idea. That's a relief to hear.

This is correct. I work with claimants regularly and many are experiencing this delay. The maintenance was scheduled but the delay is longer than they anticipated. Most payments from Sunday should arrive by tomorrow, but some might take until Monday to process. Remember that bank processing times add another 1-2 business days on top of NYSDOL processing.

I was having the same issue and tried calling for 2 days straight with no luck - busy signals or ridiculous wait times. I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got through to an agent in about 15 minutes. They confirmed there's a processing delay this week affecting about 30% of claims, but mine was actually flagged for ID verification which is why it was held up. Might be worth checking if you still don't see it tomorrow. They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

is that service legit? sounds sketchy to pay someone just to make a phone call for you lol

Thanks for suggesting this! I was going to say - sometimes delays happen because there's an issue with your specific claim that needs verification. If it's just the system delay, you'll probably get it tomorrow, but if there's a flag on the account, you definitely need to call. My brother-in-law had a similar issue where only his payment got delayed and it turned out there was a question about his work search activities.

THEY DO THIS ALL THE TIME!!!! System "maintenance" is just code for "we don't want to pay people on time" - happens at least once every 3 months and ALWAYS when rent is due. Not a coincidence!!!

While I understand the frustration, the maintenance schedule is actually published in advance on their website, and this particular delay was announced last week. It's good practice to keep an emergency fund for these situations if possible.

Just checked - still nothing as of 10:30am. Hoping it shows up later today!

One important thing to verify - did she receive her payment confirmation email after certifying on Sunday? If she didn't get that email, there might be an issue with how the certification was submitted. Also, has she checked her payment history in her online account to see if the payment shows as "pending" or "processed"?

She did get the confirmation email, and when we check the payment history it shows as "pending" but the previous weeks show "processed". I guess that means it's just caught in the delay and not a bigger issue?

Yes, that's a good sign. "Pending" means the system has accepted the certification but hasn't processed the payment yet. This aligns with the system delay explanation. I would expect it to change to "processed" soon, with funds arriving 1-2 business days after that status change. If it doesn't change to "processed" by Monday, that would be the time to call.

UPDATE: Her payment just came through about an hour ago! Thanks everyone for the help and reassurance. Seems like it was just the system delay after all.

Glad to hear it worked out! For future reference, the NYSDOL posts updates about maintenance and delays on both Twitter and their website under the "Alert" section. Might be worth checking there first if you notice any irregularities with future payments.
