NY unemployment payment delayed if I certify Monday instead of Sunday?
I completely forgot to certify for my NY unemployment benefits yesterday (Sunday) which is when I normally do it. I just did it this morning instead. Will my payment be delayed this week because of this? Anyone know how much later it might come? Really need it on time for rent. Thanks for any info!

You should be fine. I've certified on Monday plenty of times. Your payment might come a day later than usual, but it's not like they penalize you for certifying on Monday instead of Sunday. The system processes claims in batches, so Monday certifications typically get processed that night.

•Oh thank goodness, that's a relief! My landlord isn't exactly the patient type. Do you think it would just be one day later than normal or could it be longer?

It depends on your bank too. When I certify on Monday instead of Sunday, my payment usually hits my account Wednesday instead of Tuesday. Just one day later. But once it took until Thursday which was annoying!! The DOL processes your certification overnight but then your bank might hold it for a bit.

•Thank you! I'm with Chase if that makes any difference. Guess I'll just have to wait and see.

•Thanks! That makes sense. Just got nervous since I've always done Sunday before.

The official NYSDOL guidance is that you can certify anytime during your claim week (Sunday through Saturday), but earlier in the week is better for faster payment. Monday certifications typically result in payments arriving 1 business day later than your usual schedule. If you normally receive payments on Tuesday, expect it Wednesday. If you're really concerned about the timing, you can call the NYSDOL directly to confirm, but expect long wait times.

•YES the phone wait is INSANE!!! I tried calling last month about a certification issue and was on hold for 3+ hours before I got disconnected. TWICE!!!! The system is broken and they don't care about us at all.

If u REALLY need to talk to someone at unemployment and don't want to wait forever, try Claimyr (claimyr.com). I was freaking out about a payment issue last month and used it to get through to an actual person in like 20 minutes instead of waiting all day. They have a demo video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE. Saved my sanity for real.

•Is this actually legit? The last thing I need is to waste money on something that doesn't work when I'm already stressed about unemployment payments.

•Yeah it's legit. I was skeptical too but it actually worked. They basically call for you and then connect you when they get through. Beats waiting on hold for hours.

•Thanks for the tip! Hopefully I won't need to call, but good to know there's an option if I do need to reach someone.

Also, make sure you continue to certify on the same day (Sunday) going forward. I once accidentally got into a pattern of certifying on different days and it caused weird payment timing issues. The system works best when you're consistent with your certification day.

•That's really helpful - I'll definitely stick to Sundays from now on! I've set an alarm on my phone so I don't forget again.

I certified on a WEDNESDAY once and didnt get paid till the next MONDAY!!!! The whole system is designed to make us suffer i swear. They WANT us to mess up so they can delay payments and save money. Been dealing with NY unemployment for 3 months and its the worst experience of my LIFE!!!!

•That's not really how it works. The payment delays are just because of processing times, not some conspiracy to withhold benefits. The later in the week you certify, the longer it takes because of how the batches are processed.

My payment was a day late when I certified on Monday. Just wanted to share that I also panicked the first time this happened to me! But it did come through, just a bit delayed. The unemployment system is confusing but at least they're consistent with this part.

UPDATE: My payment just hit my account! It was one day later than usual, just like most of you said. Thanks everyone for calming my nerves about this!

Glad everything worked out for you! This is exactly why I love this community - everyone jumps in to help when someone's stressed about their benefits. Your experience will definitely help the next person who panics about certifying a day late. Thanks for posting the update!

•Totally agree! I'm new here but already seeing how supportive everyone is. Really appreciate communities like this where people actually help each other out instead of just complaining. Definitely bookmarking this thread for future reference!

So glad to see this worked out! I'm pretty new to NY unemployment myself and this whole thread has been super educational. I was wondering - does anyone know if there are any other common timing mistakes to avoid? Like are there certain holidays or times when the system processes things differently? Want to make sure I don't run into any surprises down the road!

•Great question! From what I've seen in this community, holidays can definitely mess with processing times. Labor Day weekend was a nightmare for a lot of people - payments were delayed by like 2-3 days because the DOL offices were closed. Also watch out for certifying right before major holidays like Thanksgiving or Christmas. And if there's ever a system maintenance notice on the NYSDOL website, try to certify before or after that window. The key is really just staying consistent with your Sunday certifications like everyone mentioned!
