NY unemployment deposit timelines - Are Saturday KeyBank deposits possible?
I just got released from my claim hold yesterday (Thursday) but usually I certify on Sundays. I'm wondering if KeyBank processes NY unemployment deposits on Saturdays? My rent is due Monday and I'm cutting it really close. Has anyone received their unemployment deposit on a Saturday before? Or am I going to be stuck waiting until Monday/Tuesday?

KeyBank DOES NOT process deposits on weekends, including Saturdays. I learned this the hard way last year. If your claim was released on Thursday, you'll most likely see the deposit on Monday morning. NY unemployment direct deposits only process on business days, which is super annoying when you're waiting on money for rent!

•Ugh that's what I was afraid of. My landlord is already giving me heat about being late the past two months. Thanks for the info though.

The previous comment is mostly correct, but there's a bit more to it. KeyBank doesn't INITIATE deposits on weekends, but sometimes deposits that were processed late Friday can appear in your account on Saturday morning. It depends on exactly what time your claim was released on Thursday. If it was processed before the end-of-day cutoff (usually around 4pm), you might see it tomorrow. If not, Monday is more likely.

•Oh that gives me a little hope! Do you know if there's any way to check the exact time it was processed? The website just says 'released' but doesn't give a timestamp.

•What bank do you use? I'm with KeyBank because I thought that was the default option.

In my experience with NY unemployment, if your claim shows as 'released' on Thursday, the payment is typically initiated on Friday and will hit your KeyBank account on Monday. KeyBank specifically doesn't process ACH transfers on weekends. If you need to confirm exactly when it will arrive, you should try calling NYSDOL directly to check the status, though getting through can be challenging.

•Calling NYSDOL is practically impossible these days! I spent 3 hours on hold last week before giving up. But I recently discovered this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually gets you through to an agent quickly. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE. Saved me hours of frustration when I had a similar payment timing issue last month.

When u say "released" do u mean ur CLAIM was released from pending, or the PAYMENT was released? Those r 2 different things! If ur claim was just released from pending yesterday, they still need to process the payment which takes 1-2 MORE business days. So u probably won't see it til Tuesday tbh.

•Oh shoot, I didn't realize those were different things. It says 'claim released' in my account. Does that mean they haven't even started processing the payment yet??

I had this EXACT situation in January when my furnace died and I was desperate for the payment! What the DOL rep told me is that payments released Thursday typically arrive Monday, BUT if you call your bank directly (not just KeyBank customer service but your specific branch), they can sometimes see pending deposits before they post and give you more precise timing. Worth a shot if you're in a tight spot.

•That's not always true tho. Bank branches don't always have better info than the regular customer service line. But good suggestion anyway I guess. Worth trying everything when ur desperate!

To clarify for everyone: NY unemployment follows this general timeline: 1. Claim certification (when you certify for benefits) 2. Claim processing (when they verify eligibility) 3. Claim release (when they approve payment) 4. Payment processing (1 business day after release) 5. Deposit (1-2 business days after payment processing) If your claim was released Thursday, payment processing likely happened Friday, and the deposit should appear Monday. KeyBank specifically doesn't post deposits on weekends, though some other banks occasionally do.

•Thank you for breaking that down! This makes more sense now. Sounds like I should prepare for Monday then and maybe see if my landlord will give me an extension.

maybe u could switch to direct deposit to ur own bank? keybank is kinda trash tbh. my sister switched to chase direct deposit and gets her payments way faster now

•This is actually good advice. I switched from KeyBank to direct deposit to my credit union and now get payments 1 day faster consistently. The NYSDOL website has instructions for changing your payment method.

One more thing to consider: If Monday is a holiday (like Memorial Day, Independence Day, etc.), your deposit would be delayed until Tuesday. Just checking that isn't the case for this coming Monday since you mentioned rent being due.

•No, thankfully it's not a holiday Monday. Just regular rent day pressure. I'm going to take everyone's advice here and: 1) Call my local KeyBank branch to check for pending deposits 2) Look into switching to direct deposit to my regular bank for future payments 3) Try that Claimyr service if I need to talk to someone at unemployment directly. Thank you all for the help!

Just wanted to follow up and confirm what others have said - KeyBank definitely doesn't process on Saturdays. I've been on NY unemployment for 8 months now and have never once received a deposit on weekends. The timing is always: claim released Thursday = deposit appears Monday morning (usually between 6-8am in my experience). If you're really tight on rent, some landlords will accept a screenshot of your pending payment status as proof that money is coming. Mine did that once when I was in a similar bind. Also, pro tip: set up text alerts with KeyBank so you'll know the exact moment your deposit hits!

•Thanks for the follow-up and the practical tips! The screenshot idea for the landlord is actually really smart - I never thought of that. And good point about the text alerts, that would definitely help with the anxiety of waiting for deposits. It's frustrating that the system is so predictable yet inflexible, but at least knowing the timeline helps with planning. Appreciate everyone sharing their experiences here!
