NY unemployment backpay after attending mandatory workshop - will I get my 4 weeks?
I missed my first mandatory back-to-work workshop in January because of school, and my NY unemployment payments stopped immediately. I finally attended the workshop yesterday, but I'm wondering about the backpay situation now. They owe me like 4 weeks since I filed in December and payments stopped in January when I missed that first workshop. Has anyone gone through this? Will they automatically deposit all my backpay this Tuesday with my regular payment? Or do I need to call someone? Really stressing about this because I need that money for rent!!

They won't automatically give you your backpay after attending the workshop. You need to contact them to request it specifically. Your regular payments should resume with the next certification cycle, but the backpay requires you to explain the situation to a claims specialist who can release those held payments. The sooner you reach them, the better.

Oh no, seriously?? I thought once I did the workshop everything would just go back to normal! How am I supposed to reach them? I've been calling the main number but it's always busy.

they MIGHT give it to you but dont count on it. it's hit or miss. sometimes system automatically releases it in a few days, sometimes u gotta call and explain over and over. good luck

Thanks. This is so frustrating - I only missed it because of my exam schedule, not my fault!

To clarify what others have said - attending the workshop removes the ongoing hold on your account for future payments, but the back payments won't automatically process. You need to speak with a claims specialist who can review your case and manually release those payments. When they do approve your backpay, it typically comes as a lump sum separate from your regular payment. But first, you absolutely need to get through to someone on the phone to explain your situation and request the release of those held payments.

I've been trying to call for days with no luck. Is there any other way to contact them about this? Email maybe?

I had almost the exact same thing happen last year!!! Missed a workshop because my kid was sick, payments stopped for like 6 weeks, was about to be evicted, finally got thru to someone after literally 80+ calls and they fixed it all at once. Got all my back pay like 2 days later. But yeah you HAVE to talk to someone, it won't just magically appear.

The NYSDOL system is BROKEN beyond repair! They withhold people's benefits for minor issues then make it IMPOSSIBLE to reach anyone!!! I've been through this exact nightmare twice and both times had to call 100+ times. They DON'T CARE about us!

After trying to get through for weeks with no luck, I finally used Claimyr.com to reach a NY unemployment agent. It got me through to someone in about 20 minutes when I'd been trying for days on my own. The agent was able to release all my backpay that had been held due to a similar workshop issue. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE - honestly saved me so much frustration.

I've never heard of this before. Is it legit? Did they actually help you get your back payments released?

Yes, totally legit. They just help you get through the phone system to talk to a real agent. The unemployment agent I spoke to went through my claim history, saw I had completed the requirements, and released my payments. The money was in my account two business days later.

so did you tell them at the workshop about missing the first one? sometimes the workshop people can put notes in your file that help get the backpay approved faster when you do call

I did mention it to the instructor! She said she'd note it in the system but couldn't make any promises about the backpay. Said I'd probably still need to call.

To address your specific situation: You need to keep certifying each week even while trying to resolve this backpay issue. Many people make the mistake of stopping their certifications while waiting for backpay to be resolved, which only creates more problems. When you do reach a representative, be prepared with: 1. The exact dates of the missed and attended workshops 2. Your certification history showing you continued to certify 3. Any documentation of why you missed the first workshop (school schedule) This will help expedite the backpay resolution process.

Thank you! Yes, I've kept certifying every week even though no money was coming in. I'll get my school schedule ready to prove why I couldn't make the first workshop date.

One more important thing: When you do connect with a claims specialist, ask them specifically for "retroactive payment release due to workshop compliance" - using the correct terminology can help ensure they process your request properly. Also request a confirmation number for the back payments being released and write it down. This gives you documentation if there are any further delays.

This is really helpful advice - I'll definitely use those exact words and ask for a confirmation number. I really appreciate everyone's help here!
