NY unemployment backpay started coming in but suddenly stopped - do I need to call?
Got my first batch of owed back benefits on Saturday after waiting for almost 4 months. The payments were for June and July. I was expecting the rest of my backpay (August and September) to continue depositing but everything stopped on Monday. Just checked my account today and only received my regular weekly payment that I certified for on Sunday. Does anyone know if this is normal? Will the remaining backpay start depositing again automatically or do I need to call ny unemployment to get the rest of what they owe me? I'm worried because I still need the money for August and September to catch up on bills.

This is actually pretty common. The back payments usually come in chunks and sometimes pause for a few days between batches. I'd say wait about a week before you panic. Mine came in 3 separate groups over about 10 days.

•Thanks for the info! Did you have to do anything to trigger the later batches or did they just show up?

•Nope, they just showed up randomly. The system seems to process older weeks first, then work forward. No rhyme or reason to the timing 🤷♂️

•Mine came in backward order - newest weeks first, then the older stuff. System makes no sense 🤔

After 2 months of trying to get through to someone on the phone about my missing backpay, I found this service called claimyr.com that got me a callback from an actual agent in about 30 minutes. Got all my missing payments sorted out in one call. Talking to a real human was the only thing that finally fixed my issue. Best thing I ever did to get my benefits flowing again! Check out this video about how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•Yeah I was super skeptical too but I was desperate after spending hours listening to that stupid hold music. It actually connected me with an agent who fixed everything. My backpay started showing up 2 days later.

•another unemployment "miracle solution"... what's the catch here? 🙄

•No catch that I found. They just call and wait on hold for you, then when someone picks up they connect you. Saved me from losing my mind with all the busy signals and disconnects.

•hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different?

•It's just a hold service, not some complicated thing. They don't fix your claim - they just get you through to an actual person who can help. Made all the difference for me.

This is the NYSDOL way 😂 Start paying you just enough to give you hope and then make you wonder if you'll ever see the rest. I had to call them after my backpay stopped halfway. The agent said there was a "system flag" that needed to be removed. Got the rest of my money 3 days later.

I'd wait exactly one week from when you got the first payment. If nothing by then, you gotta call. The unemployment system is totally broken and sometimes you have to annoy them to get what you're owed. I literally had to call 6 times before I got all my backpay.

•Ughhh I was afraid of this. Been trying to avoid calling because it's such a nightmare to get through.

•Try calling right when they open. I got through after only 45 mins on hold that way. Also Tuesdays seem better than Mondays for some reason.

When this happened to me, I logged into my account and noticed that some of my weekly certifications for my backpay period were marked as "pending" while others said "paid." Turned out I had answered one question wrong on a certification and it held up everything. Double check all your previous weekly certs in the system!

•Just checked and all mine say paid. That's what's so confusing! If they're all marked paid why am I only getting some of them? 😩

•That IS weird. Definitely call them then. The ny unemployment computer system is from like 1983 or something lol

Listen, calling is the only guaranteed way to get this fixed. The automated systems and website are total garbage. I spent 3 weeks waiting for "the system to process" my backpay and nothing happened until I finally got through to someone. Make it a priority to call first thing in the morning.

Had exactly the same issue last month! If your payment history shows all weeks as "paid" but you haven't received them all, there's usually an issue with the payment processing system. When I finally got through to someone (after like 25 tries), they told me they had to manually release the funds because something got stuck in their system. Classic NYSDOL efficiency 🙄

This is why I absolutely HATE the NY unemployment system. They do this to people ALL THE TIME. You have to babysit your claim or they'll "accidentally" forget to pay you everything. CALL THEM. Be persistent. Document everything. And remember the name of who you talk to.

Something similar happened to my roommate last year. Here's the most detailed explanation of what you need to do about backpay issues: First, make sure all your weekly certifications show as "paid" in the system. If they do but you haven't received payment, it's likely a payment processing delay. Second, check if your payment method (direct deposit or debit card) is correctly set up. Sometimes backpay gets sent to old/wrong accounts. Third, if it's been more than 5 business days since you saw the first payment and nothing else has come through, you definitely need to call. The NY unemployment phone system is terrible, but using claimyr.com got me through to an agent in about 30 minutes instead of spending days redialing. When you talk to an agent, specifically ask them to check for any "payment holds" or "flags" on your backpay. Often they need to manually release these. Get a confirmation number or the agent's ID number for your records. If you don't see movement within 3 business days of your call, call again and reference your previous call. Hope this helps! The system is frustrating but persistence pays off.

•I've been dealing with the unemployment system for over a year now and this advice is SPOT ON 💯

Backpay is always a mess. I think they break it up on purpose to make sure people don't get large sums at once. Something about "fraud prevention" but it's really just incompetence.

•They also do it so ppl don't spend it all at once and then claim they still need emergency assistance 🙄

•Maybe, but my backpay was only like $1800 total. Not exactly life-changing money when you're 3 months behind on rent!

•True. The whole system treats us like we're trying to scam them when we're just trying to survive!

I swear they design the system to be confusing on purpose. When I got my backpay it came in 3 separate deposits over 2 weeks. First big chunk, then nothing for 8 days, then two smaller payments back to back. Nobody at NY unemployment could explain why. 🤦♂️

If you got some of the backpay but not all, give it at least 3-5 business days before calling. Their system processes payments in batches and sometimes there's a delay between batches. But definitely call if nothing happens by the end of the week!
