Missing one payment from NY unemployment backpay - can't get past customer service

I finally got the email confirming my backpay was approved for my NY unemployment claim, but there's still one payment missing from January 2025. They approved all the other weeks but somehow skipped this one payment. I've been calling LITERALLY every single day for the past two weeks and keep getting the same response that "they're working on it." I'm so frustrated! Has anyone dealt with this before? What else can I try? Should I ask for a supervisor or contact the banking unit directly? This one missing payment is about $680 and I really need it.

I had almost the exact same situation in February. One missing payment from my backpay that was "approved." Calling the regular line was useless - just got the same scripted response about how they're "working on it" for THREE WEEKS. What finally worked was getting through to a tier 2 specialist. They can actually see what's holding up your payment and fix it on the spot in most cases. I tried for days to reach someone higher up with no luck until I used Claimyr (claimyr.com). They got me connected to an agent in about 20 minutes instead of spending hours redialing. The specialist saw that my payment was stuck in some verification queue and pushed it through. Money was in my account two days later. You can see how it works here: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Thank you so much! Did you have to say anything specific when you got through to make sure you got a tier 2 specialist? I'm desperate at this point.

same thing happnd to me. DONT bother with the banking unit they just transfer you back to regular claims. supervisor is your best bet but goodluck getting one on the phone lol

I second this. Banking unit isn't the right department for backpay issues - they only handle problems with direct deposits that were already processed but didn't arrive in your account. You definitely need a claims supervisor.

When a single payment is missing from an otherwise approved backpay claim, it usually means one of three things: 1. That specific week has a "flag" on it requiring manual review (often because of partial income reported or a certification issue) 2. There was a system glitch where that payment got separated from the batch processing 3. The payment was actually denied but the determination notice hasn't been generated yet You need to specifically request a "payment trace" on the missing week and ask for a claims examiner to review it. The regular agents you're reaching don't have the authority to investigate or release the payment. When you call, immediately say you need a payment trace for a specific missing backpay week. If they try to give you the standard "we're working on it" response, politely insist that you need to speak with a claims examiner or supervisor about a payment trace. Be persistent but calm.

This is really helpful detail. I'll definitely ask for a "payment trace" specifically. I did report some partial income that week from a small freelance job, so maybe that's what flagged it for review? Would that information help when I call?

Former NYSDOL employee here. Missing single payments from backpay batches are extremely common in 2025 due to the new verification system. The standard representatives truly can't help - they see the same status you do: "in process." Since you reported income for that week (based on your reply to another comment), this is almost certainly what's happening. When partial income is reported during a backpay claim, that specific week gets routed to the Partial Benefits Unit for manual calculation. Request to speak with the Partial Benefits Unit specifically. If the regular rep says they can't transfer you, ask for a supervisor and then request the transfer. Also, send a secure message through your online account with the subject line "ATTN: PARTIAL BENEFITS UNIT - MISSING BACKPAY WEEK [date]" and include your partial income amount in the message. Doing both of these typically resolves it within 3-5 business days.

Thank you so much for this specific advice! I had no idea there was a Partial Benefits Unit. Will definitely try this approach tomorrow morning.

This is excellent advice. The Partial Benefits Unit has a separate queue, and directly addressing them can significantly speed up resolution.

My situation was a bit different last month but similarly frustrating. I was missing THREE payments from my backpay approval! What worked for me was contacting my state assembly person's office. They have special liaisons with NYSDOL who can expedite issues. I emailed on a Monday and by Friday I had all my missing payments. The thing about supervisors is that they're almost impossible to reach directly - the tier 1 agents have to refer you, and they rarely do. I wasted SO MUCH TIME trying that route. Have you tried submitting the secure message form on the NYSDOL website? Sometimes that works better than calling because it creates a documented trail of your request. Whatever you do, DON'T GIVE UP! It's your money and they owe it to you!

That's a good idea about contacting my assembly person. I hadn't thought of that! I did try the secure message system last week but haven't heard anything back yet.

for real. and then they wonder why people get so angry on the phone with them.

Absolutely! And meanwhile bills are piling up and they act like we're asking for some kind of favor instead of money we're legally entitled to.

Just checking back - did you get this resolved? The Partial Benefits Unit suggestion sounds spot on based on what you shared.

UPDATE: Good news! I finally got through to someone helpful! I used the Claimyr service that was suggested above to get through the phone lines (totally worth it), asked specifically for the Partial Benefits Unit like the former employee suggested, and guess what? They found my payment! It was indeed stuck because of the partial income I reported. The agent manually recalculated it and released the payment. Should be in my account by Tuesday! Thanks everyone for your help!

Glad to hear this was resolved! For anyone else reading this thread with a similar issue, here's a quick summary of the most effective approaches: 1. Request the Partial Benefits Unit specifically if your missing payment involves reported income 2. Ask for a payment trace if a single payment is missing from an approved backpay batch 3. Send a secure message through your account with a clear subject line indicating the specific issue and date 4. Contact your state assembly person's office if you're not getting resolution after multiple attempts The key is being specific about what you need rather than just asking about status. The system is unfortunately complex, but knowing which department handles your specific issue can save weeks of waiting.

This is super helpful - I'm going to bookmark this thread for future reference. The unemployment system is such a maze to navigate.
