NY unemployment ID.me verification stuck after uploading photos - can't proceed with new claim

I'm trying to file a new NY unemployment claim and got to the ID.me verification part. I uploaded all the photos they asked for (license, selfie, etc.) but now I'm completely stuck! The system isn't letting me go any further in the process and I don't see any error messages or next steps. The page just sits there after I uploaded the pics they requested. I've tried refreshing and even logging out/back in but still stuck at the same spot. Has anyone else had this problem with ID.me verification? What am I doing wrong? This is so frustrating 🤦🏽‍♀️

I had the exact same issue last week! The ID.me verification can be super glitchy. Try these steps: 1. Clear your browser cache completely 2. Try a different browser (Chrome worked best for me) 3. Make sure you're allowing all cookies 4. If it still doesn't work, there's actually a "Help" button in the bottom right corner of the ID.me screen that connects you to their support chat In my case, I had to do a video call verification instead because their system kept rejecting my photos for "image quality" even though they looked fine to me. The video call took like 5 minutes and then I could continue my claim.

Thanks for the help! I tried using Chrome instead of Safari and it's still doing the same thing. I don't even see a help button anywhere on the screen. This is making me so anxious because I really need to get this claim started. How long did the whole process take for you?

I'll try using my phone right now! Fingers crossed it works. Did you have to start the whole application over again or just the ID.me part?

just the id.me part. the rest of ur info stays saved in the system

The ID.me verification system has specific requirements that can cause it to stall if not met properly: - Photos must be high resolution and well-lit - Your face must be fully visible with no glare on ID - The four corners of your ID must be visible - Text on the ID must be readable If you've been stuck for more than 30 minutes, I'd recommend closing everything and starting the ID.me process again. Sometimes their servers get backed up and verification requests time out without any error message. Also, check if you have any browser extensions or pop-up blockers that might be interfering with the process.

I didn't think about the lighting! My apartment is pretty dark and I was just using the overhead light. I'll try again near a window with better lighting. Do you know if there's a limit to how many times I can attempt the verification before getting locked out?

There's no specific attempt limit I'm aware of, but if you fail multiple times in succession, the system might temporarily restrict further attempts as a security measure. Taking a 30-minute break between attempts is usually sufficient if this happens. Good lighting makes a huge difference - natural daylight works best for these verification systems.

ID.me is THE WORST!!! I spent THREE DAYS trying to get through their stupid verification last month. The website kept freezing, saying my pictures weren't good enough, then randomly logging me out. THEN when I finally got through, the NYSDOL website didn't even recognize that I'd completed verification!!! The whole system is designed to make it IMPOSSIBLE to get benefits. They WANT you to give up!!

While ID.me definitely has its issues, it's actually not designed to prevent people from getting benefits. The system is meant to prevent fraud, which unfortunately did increase during the pandemic. There are definitely technical issues they need to fix though. For the NYSDOL not recognizing your completed verification - that typically happens when there's a sync delay between systems. Usually resolved within 48 hours, though obviously that's frustrating when you need to file a claim.

Maybe not "designed" to block benefits but it sure FEELS that way when you've been trying for days!! And the 48 hour "sync" turned into a WEEK for me and I had to call them multiple times. Not everyone can wait that long when they need money for FOOD and RENT!!

I fought with ID.me for days trying to verify my identity for my NY unemployment claim. Couldn't get through to anyone at NYSDOL for help either. After wasting hours on hold, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual NYSDOL agent in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE The agent was able to note in my account that I was having ID.me technical issues and gave me an alternative verification method. Saved me so much frustration after being stuck at the same spot you're describing.

OMG thank you! I've been trying to call NYSDOL for two days now and keep getting disconnected. I'll check out that Claimyr thing because I really need to talk to someone who can help. Did they ask for any special information when you finally got through to the agent?

Yes, have your NY.gov ID, SSN, and the email address you used for ID.me ready. They'll also ask security questions to verify your identity. The agent I spoke with actually said they've been dealing with lots of ID.me issues lately and had a process for handling it. Much easier than battling with the website!

I just checked all my email folders including spam and don't see anything from ID.me or NYSDOL 😩 It's been over 24 hours now too.

When I was doing my claim last year, I had a similar issue with ID.me. For me the problem was actually my browser zoom setting! I had my browser zoomed in to 125% and that somehow messed with the ID.me interface. When I set it back to 100%, the "Next" button appeared at the bottom of the screen that I couldn't see before. Might be worth checking if you have any zoom/accessibility settings enabled that could be hiding part of the interface?

That's a really good suggestion! I'm going to check my zoom settings right now. I do sometimes zoom in on websites without even thinking about it. I'll report back if this works!

Any update? Were you able to get through the ID.me verification? If none of the browser fixes worked, you might need to request the video call verification option.

I actually got it working! It was a combination of things - I switched to using Chrome at 100% zoom on my laptop, made sure I was in good lighting, and then weirdly enough had to turn off my VPN that I forgot was running. After that, I got through the ID.me part and was able to continue my claim. Thanks everyone for all the suggestions!

the whole unemployment system in ny is broken if u ask me. took me 3 months to get my first payment last time cause of all these stupid verification hoops

The verification requirements have actually been significantly improved since 2023. The current NY unemployment system typically processes claims within 2-3 weeks when all verification is completed correctly. The backlog issues from previous years have mostly been resolved with their system upgrade in late 2024. While not perfect, it's functioning much better than it was.
